Tambuwal shouldn’t be killed like Okadigbo, Ige, Buhari group warns

Aminu Tambuwal

The Buhari Campaign Organisation, on Friday, warned that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, should not be allowed to die like some prominent Nigerian politicians, who died in controversial and politically-motivated circumstances, and whose killers have never been found.

The organization gave the warning in a statement following the withdrawal of the security details attached to the Speaker by the Nigeria Police on Thursday.

The security was withdrawn following Mr. Tambuwal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The police said the Speaker breached the 1999 Constitution by his action.

The campaign outfit of a presidential aspirant of the APC, Muhammadu Buhari, said former Senate President, Chuba Okadigbo, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Bola Ige, and a former Deputy National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, Marshall Harry, were killed in controversial circumstances, adding that with the withdrawal of the Speaker’s security, he might be exposed to similar danger.

The organization said it would be very sad to witness the ugly and sordid tale of the country’s recent past.

It pleaded with President Goodluck Jonathan to protect and guarantee Mr. Tambuwal’s safety by restoring his security details.

“We’re making this passionate appeal following the less than elegant manner his security details were withdrawn by the Inspector General of the Police, and thus exposing him to danger,” the organization said in the statement by Osita Okechukwu.

“It is our candid view that Hon. Tambuwal as of today remains the valid Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; if this is the case, he should enjoy all the privileges and perquisites of the office.”

The organization said the greatest disservice to the nation’s democracy would be when public officers were deliberately expose to harm and also when the executive arm of government fragrantly invade other arms in utter violation of the doctrine of separation of powers.

It said, “Mr. President you have in different fora promised Nigerians and friends of Nigeria of free and fair 2015 general elections; if this promise is genuine then The Buhari Campaign Organization is compelled to remind you that election is a process.

“If you agree with us that election is a process, then intruding in the affairs of a legislative house which has in its own accord adjourned its sitting, will amount to rigging of 2015 general elections via the back door.”

The organization said from all indications, Mr. Tambuwal was being hunted for defecting to the APC, adding “assuming this is the case, then we appeal that due process and rule of law should be strictly adhered to in the collective interest of our dear nation.”
