IG of Police authorizes Police Commissioners to issue tinted glass permit

Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba

The Nigerian Police has decentralized the issuance of tinted glass permit for motorists in Nigeria.

In a statement, the Police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, delegated powers to all Commissioners of Police across Nigeria to issue the permit.

Mr. Ojukwu said the decentralization of the permit is to help “bring the service closer to the people”, and avoid abuse in the process of granting the permits.

Motorists with such demand will get their vehicles examined to ascertain that the tinted glasses are factory fitted.

Mr. Ojukwu said the permits issued by the CPs will have the same authority as those issued previously by the police Headquarters.

“Such permits have the same authority as those previously issued by Force Headquarters and are valid throughout the Federation,” Mr. Ojukwu said.

The decentralisation upturns the directive by the former IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, who in April 2013 allocated sole powers to the office of the IGP as regards the issuance of tinted glass permits.

We don’t need the permit, it is useless. Efforts should be made to modernize the operations of the force to enable it know from looking at a number plate if the driver or car is wanted for any crime. Issuing permits is so cheap and does not prevent an crime. The number plate is more important a tool for crime prevention. They should work on the database of car owners and plate numbers, and have capability to get information about a plate number within the shortest possible time. This should be done without asking Nigerians to pay for tinted permit.
