A civil society, Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People, CDRP, has condemned the assault on Justice John Adeyeye of Ekiti State High Court by the Ekiti State
Justice Adeyeye presiding over an election tribunal contesting the eligibility of Governor-Elect Ayodele Fayose in the recently concluded gubernatorial elections was attacked by supporters of Mr. Fayose.
In a statement jointly signed by its Acting National Coordinator of the group –Saka Waheed and Acting National Secretary – Wasiu Adebisi, the group described the act as primitive, abuse of power and flagrant disregard for constituted authority.
“If Mr. Ayodele Fayose truly slapped Justice John Adeyeye inside the premises of the State High Court in Ado Ekiti, then, the last hope of the common man is dashed. This is because the only rope which the citizens hang on for checking the excesses of the mighty in the society has been visibly confronted, violated ,desecrated and defeated. The action is randomly evil and ignominious.”
The group called on the National Judicial Council, NJC, Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, and indeed the federal government of Nigeria to openly condemn this action and ensure that the perpetrators of this belligerent assault against the court do not go scot-free.
Immediate action on the subject matter, CDRP said “will prevent future occurrences and ultimately restore the citizen confidence in the potency and sacred identity of both the rule of law and interpreters of the rule of law”.
