Boko Haram politically-motivated, says Ex-Gov. Orji Kalu

Orji Uzor-Kalu
Orji Uzor-Kalu

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu on Tuesday said the insurgency ravaging the North Eastern part of Nigerian is instigated by people who do not want President Goodluck Jonathan to lead the country.

He did not name the people.

The former governor who is also known for criticising his successor, Theodore Orji, however praised him Mr. Orji describing him as “a great asset to the country”.

He stated this during a visit to the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abuja.

Mr. Kalu, who was governor of Abia State on the platform of the PDP between 1999 and 2007, returned to the party in controversial circumstances in 2013 after about six years of leaving it to float the Peoples Progressive Alliance, PPA.

The former governor assured that because the raging insurgency was politically-motivated, it would be defeated.

“The insurgency is politically-motivated because there is no other thing to do,” he said. “It is instigated by people who do not want President Jonathan to be president.’’

Mr. Kalu asked those sponsoring the Boko Haram sect to make a sacrifice by allowing Mr. Jonathan to do a second term in office in order to advance the country’s development.

He said he was now a full member of the PDP and claimed that despite misgivings in some quarters, he remained an asset not only to the party, but also the country.

According to him, the PDP would remain in power at the centre as from 2015 because people like him were still members of the party.

“How can the PDP lose the presidency when it has people like us who are very popular and creating jobs every day? I do not see how PDP will lose the election in 2015?” he said.

“Democracy is not about one person or President Jonathan. We have to bring our efforts together so as to move democracy forward. President Jonathan is doing everything possible to bring the Chibok girls’ back. We must thank our military men for the job they are doing.

“Insurgency is a new thing to us. Insurgency is politically-motivated and it is the people who think Jonathan should not contest the 2015 that are behind it. They should allow him to finish his tenure,” he said.

I agree with you but what is he doing to stop them ? Seeking sympathy ? Ruling with weakness ? Is he a woman ? It’s obvious that no leadership without enemies but how and what you do to compromise matters not stories ! Is he sick ?

    • Jujubeans

“Is he a woman?” That is a very sexist comment. Quality and strength of leadership has nothing to do with your sex. The current leader of the biggest economy in Europe is a woman, Angela Merkel. She is strong and very, very effective. So was Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain, so was Golda Meir of Israel, our very own Ellen Johnson Sirlief of Liberia and soon hopefully, Hillary Clinton of the US.

  • Concerned Nigerian

1- During the 2003 election the boko haram leadership and
followership voted for Ali Sherif massively.
2- In 2005 even after the Kanamma and Gwazo incidence that
indicted the Boko Haram sect, Ali Sherif arrogantly went ahead and
appointed their member (Hon Buji Fai) as commissioner for
religious affairs by way of financing their terrorism indirectly.
3- All security reports that were addressed to the governor in those
days by the Izalas and the Tarikas against the boko haram movement
under top secrecy were being smuggled to the leadership of the
boko haram by government officials. Thereby making the IZALAS &
TARIKAS targets and vulnerable for attacks by the boko haram.
4- Such double-standard of the Ali Sherif administration coerced the
people of Borno to stop writing or reporting anything against the
    boko haram.
5- Sheriff ordered the killing of the leader of the Boko Haram (Mohd
Yusuf) who was arrested alive and could have otherwise reveal
relavant informations as to who their sponsors were.
6- High profile members like Baba Fugu Mohammed and Hon Buji
fai were all killed with the directive of Sherif to avoid further
investigation that will in fact indict him!
7- Almost all of Sherif’s political thugs- the ‘ecomogs’ participated in
the war siding with Boko Haram eg Babale otherwise known as
Baleriya and his men participated and is a general knowledge. But
was allowed to come and help his party in the 2011 general
8- After the 2009 war, there were not the slightest of insecurity in
Borno state, people were living peacefully.
    9- But Sherif re-created the insurgence single-handedly.
10- Sometime in 2010, we woke up in the morning and witnessed
Boko Haram flags everywhere in the city of Maiduguri, including
    police stations and court premises.
11- Later some youth- the ECOMOGS (political thugs) were arrested
with the flags and they confessed that it was the SSA to Sherif on
media – Shehu Liberty that gave them the flags to mount them at
strategic locations like the police stations and court premises.
12- Shehu Liberty was arrested by the police, but Sheriff managed to
    extenuated him.
13- Note that those flags were exactly the same with the ones used
by the original boko haram during the 2009 war.
14- However, in the same year, both the Borno State Chairman and
State Secretary of the ANPP were arrested with the same kind of
riffles used by the boko haram fighters during the 2009 war.
15- As usual Sherif managed to extenuated them.
16- In 2012, Gen Monguno’s panel arrested all the ecomogs in
Borno state, and they confessed that Sherif ordered them to kill
soldiers, police, customs immigrations and prison service by way of
    posing as boko haram.
17- And that anyone who kill a soldier and snatched a gun is paid
very large amount of money and lesser amount if he could’nt snatch
a the gun. And is given lesser proportion if police is killed and
lesser to prison service and the arithmetic goes down.
18- Due the interest of the federal government in the terrorism, Gen
Monguno lost his seat as the Director of defence intelligence and
    Sherif was extenuated.
19- May be that’s why the federal government adopted all Sherif’s
enemies in the Borno State PDP as it own enemy and blindly wich-
hunting Sherif’s arch enemies such as Ali Ndume and Ahmed
Zannah and even denied them lucrative appointments such as
    ministerial and heads of parastatals.
20- Why is it that the federal Govt has to console Ali Sheriff of ANPP
before offering appointments to any of the Borno State PDP
21- Are they in the same cult organizations? If so, is their cultism
stronger than the party? If it is a common friendship, hasn’t he
(President Jonathan) any friend in the PDP? If yes why?
22- As the truth is always unique and irrepressible! The emergence
of the youth volunteer group, popularly known as the civilian JTF,
who are not politicians but original citizens of Borno revealed that
almost all the Boko Haram arrested and tortured use to confess that Ali sheriff is their sole sponsor

I doubt if most posters on this forum live in Nigeria.ever since jonathan became president northern oligarchs vowed to frustrate his government through boko haram and the largely biased news and print media.this man has not rested since he became president.just to make sure a south south man does not rule Nigeria they created boko haram.they are smiling at what is going on now but it would end soon.almighty god would purnish them, they would lose their kids and Nigeria would move forward.death to boko haram and it’s sponsors and creators

    • Efe1

Tell me what GEJ has done to stop them frustrating his govt. He travelled with Ali modu sheriff the other day. Yet you are here blaming other people but GEJ. Or it is the northern oligarch that said they should travel together?

    • Jujubeans

But BH existed during Yaradua’s time. Yaradua was old school eite Hausa/Fulani.. So how come all of a sudden BH is all about stopping GEJ?

  • True Nigerian

Very poor analysis; boring, empty, lame and lazy thinking. Very empty diagnosis! At best, it is purely speculative.

Whilst you are blabbing rubbish after 8 years of woeful individualistic and egotistic leadership in Abia, the President you are defending with your speculation was flying in the company of the only established boko haram sponsor that we know for now. People who should be in jail are flying in Presidential company and presidential jet. It is horrendous leadership! That horrible leadership, more than anything else, is the reason Nigeria is on the way down and about to descend into a total darkness.

If this whole horror was aimed at bringing Jonathan down, what did he do about it? Sat back like a duck, supervised the mindless disappearance of $20b and concentrated on however he could get a 2nd term which has no meaning for about 100 million ordinary Nigerians who cannot boast of their daily meals or a good job with a living wage. And all you do is simply grab a headline with your ridiculous diagnosis for a problem that could have been solved in 2010 by building on Yaradua’s forceful and effective response against these animals.

I ask you again: if it was targeted at Jonathan’s government, what on earth did he do to end it? Worse still, what exactly is he doing now to end it? That is the question which, as baffling as it is, cannot be answered by anybody. As boko haram seize more territories from Nigeria, the President is busy going round African countries in the name of building support against boko haram – an action designed to make a clueless lame and ineffective leadership to appear busy and engaged in problem solving. That ridiculous level of leadership is the reason John McCain said that there is no government in Nigeria. And that should make you ashamed of yourself and the horrendous quality of leadership you are defending.

    • Jujubeans

Very well said. I often wonder why PDP actually want this guy to be their candidate. His leadership qualities are soooo bad.

  • concerned9ja

Thank you Kalu. I am sure you are speaking tongue-in-cheek. It was necessary you speak the language the desperate president and his cohorts wanted to hear. If BH was about bringing the clownish president down why has he looked sideways in the wake of fingers pointing to the sect’s financiers? If Shekau was to emerge today and promise Jona support for 2015, this selfish man would roll out red carpet and eat from the same plate with him. It was time this heartless man is voted out by Nigerians.

It is people like you that are still confusing Mr President the more. Remember Boko Haram started way back before the administration of GEJ, the group only advance during this administration. You people should learn to give meaningful advice to Mr President on the way forward.GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

He just wants to get back on track with PDP, he doesn’t have a choice more than to praise him. He knows quite alright that the mess of GEJ has already been exposed and nigerians now believe in the truth that, it’s all political to get him re-elected by blaming the opposition. It’s the end of GEJ administration and all nigerians wants change now

Buhari is not what you thought afterall.

  • Mayo

    1) The writer says ..EFCC is now brazenly arresting big names after sleeping through Jonathan’s five-year reign…. Who are the big names that EFCC has recently arrested? Is it Timpre Sylva who was already being probed under GEJ? Is it Nyako, the former Adamawa governor who was also being probed under GEJ?

    2) The writer says Buhari definitely has an idea of what to do as evidenced by Buhari’s international consultation travels which is primarily to woo allies for the overall security of the country, and that GEJ didn’t know what to do. Is the writer saying he was not aware of GEJ’s numerous trips abroad because of BH? GEJ attended meetings in France and had several meetings with Cameroon and others because of BH. The writer also conveniently forgot that Buhari criticized GEJ’s government when it was announced that Nigeria would be working with Chad and Cameroon on BH. Buhari said then that Nigeria could defeat BH on its own and that it was the inefficiency and corruption in the Nigerian Army that was hampering Nigeria but now Buhari has gone ahead to do the same thing.

    • Proud Yoruba

How about Akpabio and Dan Etete? not big fish?

Jonas trips abroad was for naught as we can all tell from the action we saw in 6 weeks during the postponement of elections. The international community did not orchestrate that, it was Jona who finally bought the army equipment and escalated the offensive.

      • Mayo

First, Akpabio was not arrested. He was invited for questioning. If you check you will see that it is not uncommon for EFCC to invite ex-governors for questioning (even under GEJ).

With respect to the second point, I wasn’t referring to who orchestrated the trips or if it was well received by foreign governments. My point was that traveling abroad to seek help for BH is not on its own a sign that you know what you’re doing because both GEJ and Buhari have done that but the writer says one person doesn’t know what he wants to do while the other does.

      • Mo Mody

Have Akpabio and Dan Etete been arrested or convicted?

    • JoeTheBlaster

I believe it is Jonathanians that are conveniently refusing to reason deeply. The fact that Buhari explained and criticised the shame of relying on neighbors for prosecuting the Boko Haram war was another way of pitying what has become of the once highly rated Nigerian Army that only became a home of corruption and pot-bellied Generals under Jonathan. It became the ridicule of other African countries. Soldiers even have to buy their own uniforms and they say some Generals turned to millionaires. How do you expect Buhari to come and drive away foreign partners that western countries forced on Jonathan to help us drive away Boko Haram? Buhari did not promise that. He promised restoring the Army past glory and that process will take some time. Before then though, he has to use the materials available to fight first until the situation calms down.

  • Proud Yoruba

I am so unhappy to say that Buhari is becoming a real disappointment! The last time, he lasted 20 months, this time he may not last a year if he continues this way. The gods are not with him, nothing is going well for him, they told him to make his mark the first 100 days and then he will have a smooth sail, but he is stubbornly refusing to heed any sound advice. One wonders why he wanted to be president for over 12 years. This is the 21st century, everything is done collaboratively and everyone is beholden to someone or the other. Saraki on the other hand is just a brainless bimbo who this country has fed for too many years and got absolutely nothing in return for it. He is essentially a charity case that we have kept too long. I think we should srap the senate and just go with the house of reps and save Nigeria a lot of money and time.

The writer is obviously an intellectual light weight, pretending to be an analyst with conclusory hypothesis based on rumored action of President Buhari. Otherwise, why attribute the turn around maintenance of the refineries to a Buhari presidency without a cabinet and without any stated public policy. The intellectual “wannabe” postulated with out evidence that the credit must go to GMB since GEJ didn’t claim credit during the re-election campaign.
Next time try harder and read past newspapers on the history of the topic you wanna write about.

    • absam777

Nonsense! What has the constitution of a cabinet got to do with the running of a government? Does a government run with civil servants or ministers? The presidency can give directives to permanent secretaries to keep a ministry and its projects running smoothly. The whole matter is that of attitude and perception. While Jonathan was a weak president that allowed his lazy cabinet to continue running rings round him, the fear of Buhari is the beginning of wisdom for a head of department or civil service. No credit to Jonathan for the refineries that claimed to be running again.

  • Okey

It is utterly shameful, to say least, that Nigerians will be heard making a preference for an immoral meeting summoned at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, falsely engaging President Buhari’s instance and name, for the imposition of one-man’s candidates on the nation’s highest legislative body, NASS, over a duly conducted leadership election on the floor of the Senate. Impugning a result that made for national inclusiveness whilst supporting a cabal for ethnic exclusion, by anybody making a pretence of love of Nigeria is most regrettable.

The President duly issued a proclamation to bring into life the 8th National Assembly. In that issue, the President was certain; he said the 8th Assembly shall come into effect at 10:00 A.M. of June 9, this year of our Lord, 2015. And in line with that constitutional order, 57 Senators-elect dutifully, patriotically and constitutionally went to the Senate Chambers to be inaugurated and were, in deed, inaugurated. Thereafter, the Senate carried out its first legislative duty which was the election of the Senate President and his Deputy. That they did successfully and in fact, their President, Senator Saraki, enjoyed wider acceptance that he was elected opposed. And that of his deputy keenly contested.

Meanwhile, some other Senators unpatriotically ignored the President’s order of proclamation and went to the NICON hotel extension behind the ICC, just to wine and merry for having won election into the Senate. And by the time they sauntered back to the Senate, the law and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have taken their due course. The wining and merrymaking Senators now say the hand of the clock should be shifted backwards to accommodate their giddy dream that 36 hours, instead of 24, make up a day. That cannot happen as it is a pure lie.

APC should be full of gratitude to Senator David Mark for being himself – being and remaining gentlemanly in the circumstance. In fact, they should also thank Senator Saraki for standing up to defend APC’s interest at that crucial moment. Had Saraki not done what he did, one of those 49 PDP Senators dutifully present would have emerged the Senate President and no Jupiter will reverse it, since APC doesn’t have the 2/3 majority to upturn it. APC should be full of gratitude to Saraki and the Clerk of the National Assembly.

What took place on June 9, 2015, was a national rebellion against one man’s imposition; a national rebellion against false-Change. That’s precisely why President Buhari never wasted any time in validating the National Assembly proceedings of June 9, 2015. That is as it should be. Also the British and the American governments have validated same by paying courtesy visits to the leadership of the National Assembly pronto. All the authorities – the President the British and American Govts – knew that what was to take place at the restaurant adjacent to the ICC was an imposition, NOT democratic.

For the first time in the history of this nation, a Christian minority from the Inner North was able
to squeeze his head up to become the No. 4 Citizen of our dear country. Also in an era where a Buhari was expected to punish the South East for not voting for him massively, the man decided to prove all of us wrong. What then is the unbearable headache ? The only convergence between the cabal impositionists and pseudo patriots and intellectuals is the discomfort that an Igboman – Ike Ekweremadu – emerged in an era where there is a “consensus” that Ndigbo be punished for voting Jonathan. But thank goodness, President Buhari is not comfortable with that “consensus” and has openly and clearly demonstrated he is not part of it. That’s why he wasted no time in welcoming the result of June 9, 2015 in the National Assembly. At least, the President has distanced himself from those who want to perpetuate tribal hate hiding behind a Buhari. Otherwise, how can any sane and just Nigerian rationalize why the self-styled owner of APC will insist that Femi Gbajabiala MUST become the House of Reps Leader even after Yoruba have become Vice President, Senate President and Deputy Speaker, respectively when other zones with equally competent legislators have not been considered ? What “democracy,” what “party discipline”, what CHANGE can that be ?

Now the decision, in fact duty, whether to have a smooth, peaceful and enduring parliament in Nigeria or not lies with the anti-Ekweremadu, nay, anti-Igboman, elements in APC (party and NASS). Unless the whole essence of APC politics is “Power Grab and Igbo Exclusion,” they have a duty to concentrate on legislation as their duty and allow the Senate Leadership be. Now, APC does not have the 2/3 to effect a change of Ekweremadu or anything in the Senate. Any “We no go gree” in the Senate will only result in crisis, confusion and setback against the Buhari Govt and the entire nation. Because, PDP in the Senate will equally “No go gree.” APC operatives in and outside the Senate have a choice to make between guaranteeing a peaceful governance for Buhari and Nigeria or a crisis-ridden 4 years with nothing good to show for it.
