Ita Ekpenyong, a former director-general of the State Security Service, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
Agency sources told PREMIUM TIMES Mr Ekpenyong, who led SSS between 2010 and 2015, was moved to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja following a raid on his home earlier today, confirming findings by Sahara Reporter a moment ago.
PREMIUM TIMES broke the news of an ongoing raid of Mr Ekpeyong’s home in Asokoro, Abuja, this afternoon.
The EFCC has been attempting to search Mr Ekpenyong’s home and possibly arrest him to face charges for alleged arms procurement fraud, but the moves were frustrated by Lawal Daura, the ousted former DG of SSS.
Security sources said Mr Daura enforced a questionable tradition of a security agency refusing to hand over its own to another agency for prosecution, except on strict and expressed directive from the president.
