The Nigerian Army has provided details of how the alleged mastermind of the New Year day tragedy in Rivers was killed.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Prince Igwedibia, popularly known as Don Wani or Don Waney, was shot dead on Saturday evening. He was killed in a joint operation by the State Security Service and the army.

In a statement on Sunday, an army spokesperson, Aminu Iliyasu, said the suspect relocated to Enugu State after the New Year murder of 23 people returning from a church in Omoku, Rivers State.

Mr. Iliyasu, a colonel, said the suspect was already planning another attack on Omoku even while in Enugu.

He was shot and killed in Enugu while trying to evade arrest, the army said.

Read the army’s full statement below.

The authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wish to inform the peace loving people of Omoku in ONELGA in particular, Rivers State and indeed the entire good people of Niger Delta in general that the notorious cult leader, kidnap kingpin and mass murderer Don Waney is dead.

Recall that in the early hours of Monday 20th November 2017, troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army acting on credible information from some patriotic members of the public raided the evil Don Waney enclave in Omoku, ONELGA Rivers State where shocking discoveries of assorted weapons, dynamites, bags of suspected cannabis, full military camouflage uniforms, military boots, military communication radios, 10 human skulls and human bones were discovered. Additionally, in continuation of the operation on Tuesday 21st November 2017, the troops also exhumed decomposing bodies of some of his victims in his shrine in the glaring eyes of the media who were invited to witness first hand.

Perhaps not satisfied with the numerous lives of innocent citizens he took, Don Waney masterminded the despicable New Year day mayhem in Omoku in which he led his notorious gang of criminals to murder 23 peace loving citizens of Omoku when they were returning from Cross Over Service at about 1:30am on Monday 1st January 2018.

Intense surveillance activities on him and his gang by the Department of State Services (DSS) Rivers State Command revealed that after committing these atrocities he relocated to a neighbourhood within Enugu Town in Enugu State where he rented an apartment and started living among unsuspecting neighbours within the community.

From the relative safety of his newly-rented apartment, Don Waney was already perfecting plans to wrought another mayhem in Omoku in which he was to attack churches, schools, Army and Police locations and the RESIDENCES of the generality of the already traumatized people of Omoku. However, following his successful geo-location to his new Enugu neighbourhood hideout by the DSS Rivers State Command, a combined team of troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu and personnel of DSS Rivers State Command raided the hideout to arrest him and his other accomplices. Incidentally on sensing that the combine team were closing in on his residence, Don Waney, his Second- in- Command (Ikechukwu Adiele) and another gang member (Lucky Ode) attempted to escape through the back exit of the apartment and were shot down by the eagle eyed troops in the process. One of them died on the spot while the other 2 who sustained gunshot wounds eventually died while being evacuated for medical attention.

The remains of Don Waney and his cohorts were brought back to Port Harcourt Rivers State by the combine team and handed over to the Rivers State Police Command for further action.

To this end, the authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wishes to use this opportunity to extend their condolences to the families of all the victims of the evil Don Waney and his gang. We also wish to solicit your further cooperation in volunteering useful information to track down and arrest the remaining gang members so as to bring them to justice for a peaceful, prosperous and secured Omoku community, ONELGA, Rivers State and the entire Niger Delta region.

Intense surveillance activities on him and his gang by the Department of State Services (DSS) Rivers State Command revealed that after committing these atrocities he relocated to a neighbourhood within Enugu Town in Enugu State where he rented an apartment and started living among unsuspecting neighbours within the community.

He was under the SSS “intense surveillance”, and yet he was able to plan, acquire guns and carry out the massacre with impunity.

  • thusspokez

However, following his successful geo-location to his new Enugu neighbourhood hideout by the DSS Rivers State Command, a combined team of troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu and personnel of DSS Rivers State Command raided the hideout to arrest him and his other accomplices.

Chineke! the cowardly SSS can’t arrest the man by itself; it needed the army to help it. How often does it ask the army for help when it goes on raids of homes and offices.

  • thusspokez

One of them died on the spot while the other 2 who sustained gunshot wounds eventually died while being evacuated for medical attention.

So, now, Nigerians would never know their motives for carrying out the massacre.

    • Julius

True, I would have prefered that at least one of them got captured but, the law enforcement got to do what they got to do. You feel me ?

    • Rumournaire

True, but there are times when such on-the-spot killing is in the higher public interest. Think of those who carry out mass killings in American malls, schools and public places. The priority of law-enforcement agencies is to kill them. Yes, it would have been good to at least arrest one of them, but it is not always possible.

      • So oju abe niko

apple and oranges. The American mass murderers referenced were killed during the act. The death of the “deranged” mass murderers immediately stopped the carnage. In contrast, the so-called intelligence led to the den of this suspect, who may or may not be responsible for the Omoku mass murder. The place was well surrounded, and they could have caught all the criminals alive, but they were simply not trying, because our security forces believe it is a waste of time for criminal suspects to be tried in courts. It would force them to do genuine intelligence work to prove the crime in courts, and genuine intelligence gathering activities just happen to be alien to the Nigerian law enforcement authorities. Trials in courts take time and intelligence, but the public is the winner at last. Short cuts provide immediate gratification, but leaves our important intelligence gathering capability in stone ages, as well many innocent citizens wrongly accused/killed by our uniformed vigilantes.

        • Rumournaire

On further thought, I accept your point. They could have shot the man in the leg to immobilise him so they could arrest him. Our military (and most American, but not European law enforcers) only know how to shoot to kill. Like you said, it gives short-term satisfaction but at a cost of valuable learning.

      • thusspokez

Think of those who carry out mass killings in American

I am sorry but this discussion is about Nigeria – not America.

The priority of law-enforcement agencies is to kill them.

This would be illegal in any country. No civilised country would give a ‘license to kill’ to its law-enforcement agency. The priority, as always, is public safety.

Ok the law enforcement kills the perpetrators but what have they learnt from the crime and about the perpetrators’ reason and motivations? They are dead and therefore can’t now help with the investigations – maybe there are other cells and many followers and members in the wings to carry out more massacres.

If one or more were alive, with plea bargain, they could divulge information about accomplices, sponsors that could help destroy the group.

  • PLAN A

Why is it that the Nigerian army is not able to provide proof of arrest or capture of herdsmen involved in killings in Benue or other states even when these herdsmen are less formidable. ANSWER :they are protected by powers that be and you-know-who.

    • Solomon Brown

You beat me to it. We also don’t get this much detail when it is boko haram.

      • Julius

Damn, maybe they should have left that tug, murderer alone…right ? Some of you dumb asses were blaming Buhari a couple of days ago when the news first came out. Now, you’ve moved on to comparing it to the herdsmen and the BK. You just can’t help yourself and can’t handle the truth. We need to be honest with ourselves if we are going to solve our problems in this country..we are killing ourselves and blaming some ‘other’ ppl. Na wa oo !

    • thusspokez

What exactly is your problem and the point of your ‘whatabout’?

      • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

It is very suspicious that killer herdsmen are never arrested yet they act so quick in the SS and SE and by the way the Army have no right to play Judge,Juror and executioner .

Suspects must be tried fairly no matter the gravity of their crime, they are entitled to due process of law.

        • thusspokez

I still don’t understand the purpose of your ‘whatabout’ argument. Are you arguing that the law enforcement agencies’ should have left the murderers alone and deny the families of their victims any closure and justice because of the law enforcement agencies’ earlier failures to arrest other criminals?

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Well my English is clear enough. There is a trigger happy thing going on in the SS and SE. Unless our laws are changed to accomodate summary executions without trial then this culture of killing suspects without trial must end no matter the gravity of the offence.

I believe that the gathering of intelligence from suspects does enhance the prevention of crime so when a troph of intelligence is wasted ,it makes no sense .

I believe mass murderers should be hanged but they must be charged, tried and convicted and executed. That is what makes us civilised and that is what makes a country of law.

          • thusspokez

Here is my question again (which requires a “Yes” or “No” answer):

“Are you arguing that the law enforcement agencies’ should have left the murderers alone and deny the families of their victims any closure and justice because of the law enforcement agencies’ earlier failures to arrest other criminals?

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

I have made my position clear, the Army has no constitutional right to administer such closure to victims, it is the constitutional duty of the judiciary.

  • lakande1

The atrocities committed by Don wani and his group(who are all definitely christians) will never be associated with their religion. But if these atrocities w6ere committed by a Muslim, immediately his religion will be associated with his actions. Double standard.

    • Olusesi Rufus’Tay

Because they did not claim to be killing for Jehovah or Jesus Christ like Islamists claim they kill for Allah… Secondly, for all of the 3 suspects to have died on raid tells that something is still fishy. That’s just my opinion

      • Onike24

So the lunatic in Uganda who led the Lords resistance Army did it for Jesus Christ? So called Islamists can claim anything; the pertinent question should be “ does the faith of Islam sanction the killing of innocents? It does not…

    • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

……Because Muslims claim to kill on behalf of Allah .

    • okenwa

We red few years ago that five Hummer buses were arrested on their way to rivers state loaded with Hausa Fulani terrorists and we also red that a truck load of Hausa Fulani terrorists was intercepted on its way to Ogun/ondo states armed with cutlass and suddenly scores of people are killed in those areas. Terrorism is a trade mark of Hausa Fulani.

  • Bishop Fidel Obi Boateng

Carry YOUR eagle eye and intelligent surveillance to Boko Haram’s and Fulani herdsmen’s forests and shoot them all down. We need your eagle eyes in Benue, Kaduna, and plateau states. Killeers and investigators at the same time. Disaster for Nigeria!

    • Mohammed Yahaya

… and allow our killers to continue eliminating us!

      • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Answer the question, why are they so quick in the SE and SS yet they pretend not to know about the killer fulani herdsmen ?

        • Focus

Even though you’re aware 8 of the suspects in the last Benue killings were arrested and paraded the second day? Uphold truth and balance.

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

They will soon be released as usual.

          • okenwa

Why were they not shot dead since you are against arrest?

  • Damian

    Good job DSS & NA…
But never satisfied Nigerians will come with their negatives comments…
May the souls of the departed Rest In Peace.

  • brown charles

How I wish he was alive to tell us about his activities and the politicians behind him

    • okenwa

Not politicians behind him but security agents behind him.

  • forestgee

FGN should use this format against herdsmen instead of wasting our time with Police.

  • AryLoyds

So why cant this same Fulani militia , sorry Army go after the herdsmen who are killing innocent people in Benue ? May God continue to punish buhari with sicknesses and afflictions.

  • john peters

well done please do same to the herdsmen

    • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Herds men are Fulani…. have you forgotten that they are sacred lambs who cannot be arrested ?

    • Sam

Not all heardsmen are killers, just like not all Niger Delta ex militants are kidnappers / killers .the killers amongst the heardsmen should be fingered out , if you continue to demonise the entire fulani heardsmen, then we will never get to the root of this mayhem. Because retaliation and counter retaliation Emanate from this type of general accusation or demonisation of all heardsmen.

      • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Have you ever read this type of PR stunt after any herdsmen killing spree ? Have you ever seen a photograph of an arrested herdsman or any press release with details like above ?

WHY ARE THEY SO QUICK TO KILL WITHOUT TRIAL IN THE SS AND SE YET THEY CANNOT ARREST ONE HERDSMAN AND SHOW HIS FACE. THE WHOLE IDEA IS WORRISOME, I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR KILLERS BE THEM KIDNAPPERS OR HERDSMEN BUT MY CONCERN IS THAT JUSTICE MAY NOT BE SERVED WHEN SUSPECTS ARE EXECUTED WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF LAW.

        • wode

You need to read more news. Some herdsmen were reportedly arrested and charged to court. Mind you. Nobody actually saw who perpetrated the evil in Benue, we are only told by media that they are “suspected” herdsmen. Nobody has claimed responsibility neither did anybody saw and identify them when this crime was being committed. We may not really have as much details about the killings as it ought to be known. It’s up to the security agencies to do their job thoroughly and make sure that those behind the crime are unearthed and make to face full wrath of the law.

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Oh’ we are tired of those PR stunts which end in bunkum. You have already started mounting a stark defence for the arrested herdsmen and it is obvious that they will soon be released after the usual gra-gra.

          • okenwa

Mr other news reader, I wonder you didn’t read the news where miyetti Allah cattle breeders association said they will attack Benue state for enacting open grazing law in Benue state and they made good their threats. Yets you have not called on Nigeria security agencies to go and arrest them.

          • wode

I deal with facts not sentiments and parochialism. What does Miyetti Allah threat that you’re referring to has to do with the earlier raised issue of not arresting anybody that I responded to.

I don’t condone any form of criminality from wherever or whoever it may be coming from. Whoever is found culpable to be involved in the devilish act should be arrested and appropriately dealt with according to the provisions of the law.

        • okenwa

What happened in rivers state is terrorism and only Hausa Fulani are known for terrorism worldwide.

      • okenwa

All Fulani herdsmen are members of miyetti Allah cattle breeders association and they are all killers.

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

The suspect should be arrested interrogated and useful intelligence obtained from him and then tried.

The Army cannot play judge ,juror and executioner. It is illegal and unconstitutional to kill suspects without trial no matter the gravity of the crime.

    • Galantman

Stop this rubbish talk. Unconstitutional and trial my ass! This blood this idiots deserve no mercy nor due process,
You are talking like a vuvuzela because your wife ,child or blood relations were not amongst those killed. Your statement is hypocritical and insensitive to those who lost there precious lives on there way back from worshiping GOD.

      • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

If criminal suspects break the law and the government also flouts the laws guiding the justice system on a serial basis then the moral high ground is automatically occupied by the criminal suspect who was not tried. As it stands now, all these suspects are innocent in the eyes of the law and those who killed them have some explanation to make to the law.

        • Galantman

Don’t worry mr due process and law. Next time Security men are exchanging bullets with suspected murderers, kidnappers or armed robbers, step into the fray and arrest the suspects live! I pray you live to tell the story

          • okenwa

Suspects are shot in the legs to prevent escape and not killed. When you kill them you have killed information to prevent future occurrence and arrest of others that could be at large.

      • okenwa

How much do you trust Nigeria police?

    • okenwa

They cannot interrogate him because he will expose them. Reason they kill such suspects.

  • Shahokaya

“his Second- in- Command (Ikechukwu Adiele) “ It is expected, you cannot have that level of criminal activity without the involvement of his type.

    • Höly Wähala

It is expected of only your kin and type to introduce ethnicity into every topic for discussion. Your dirty tribe honor similar violent criminals by making them Yoruba traditional rulers, what is the Oka Kakanfu of Egbaland? Pig calling monkey dirty.

      • Shahokaya

Sorry I know it is painful that your brother Ikechukwu was gunned down.

      • SHOKOLOKOBAMGBOSEHIPPOPOTAMUS

Please if you want to know, it is called AARE ONA KAKANFO meaning WAR GENERALISIMO OF YORUBA. The man deserves and got it by his antecedents. Hope you are not envious? Anyway you may ask your people to have something of such for your own interest too.

        • Höly Wähala

I don’t care a hoot about yeye yoro titles, my disappointment is that a criminal and political thug is being honored and celebrated by supposedly enlightened people. Quite a hypocritical shame of you pigs… Get out of here, nonsense.

          • SHOKOLOKOBAMGBOSEHIPPOPOTAMUS

Why would you care? You can only understand a concept that you are used to. Your tribe has no central figure nor will ever have one, the reason for your discordant tunes on issues that affect you guys. I advised that you copy this aspect from the Yoruba as you copied the issue of “Chieftancy” (kingship) albeit with some funny modifications (where it can be bought)

          • Höly Wähala

IGNOORED… attention seeker, get lost punk!

          • SHOKOLOKOBAMGBOSEHIPPOPOTAMUS

            “IGNOORED”?

PLEASE GO BACK TO SCHOOL, READ AND UNDERSTAND WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT!!!! BEING A TRADER DOESNT MEAN YOU DONT NEED TO BE EDUCATED, DUMB ASS!!!!

          • Höly Wähala

            IGNOOOORRRED!!!!!

    • Galantman

Yes ohh. And they will attack you like bees for telling them the truth

    • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Shut up …badoo man like you.

      • Shahokaya

Accept my condolence for the gunning down of your brother Ikechukwu.

      • ed

The criminal was reportedly firing at the military and police with deadliest weapons. How do you expect them to arrest killers that choose to die.
Let’s be reasonable with our conversation.

        • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

IT WAS NOT STATED THAT HE WAS FIRING, HE WANTED TO EVADE ARREST IS ESCAPING THROUGH THE BACK-DOOR….STOP THOSE LIES

          • Tickle

How you take know, you dey there?

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Take time and read before exposing your ignorance .

  • Ezomon Ehichioya

@thusspokez: the SSS “intense surveillance” began after the massacre of January 1, and not before.

    • thusspokez

Even then, the SSS allowed a very dangerous group that had massacred innocent worshippers in one state to move to another state? Meanwhile little did residences of Enugu knew that in their midst are fugitive serial murderers roaming free in their city.

      • okenwa

Don’t be deceived. What happened in rivers state is terrorism and the only tribe known for terrorism is Hausa Fulani in Nigeria.

  • So oju abe niko

RIP to the Omoku people murdered on their way to church. I hope the “judicial” murder of this crime prince provide a measure of comfort to the bereaved families in Omoku. In that sense, we can say that the end justifies the means employed by our security forces. However, it is quite disquieting that important criminals are never caught alive in Nigeria. In the current Nigeria, the notorious Anini would not have been caught alive to squeal on DSP Iyamu. Criminals are veritable source of information for crime prevention, and to clarify mysteries surrounding some crimes. In Nigeria, security forces deliberately murder criminals to prevent them from having their day in courts. For all we know, this fellow could be a criminal not connected to the Omoku carnage, but became a convenient scapegoat to close the investigation prematurely. In other clime, the authorities pull all stops to save the lives of injured criminals for their intelligence potentials. In Nigeria, the police routinely kill criminals to prevent them from squealing on their police collaborators. Cases also abound where completely innocent citizens have been framed for heinous crime, to prevent investigations into deaths in the hands of security forces. Therefore, whenever there is what should ordinary be a heartwarming news of another criminal biting the dust, an average law-abiding citizen is more conflicted than joyous.

    • Lanre

So Oju Abe Niko. My Yoruba Brother. You took the words off me. I was reading through the explanation of the Nigerian Security Forces and my mind went to NIA Funds in Ikoyi; the surreptitious return of Abdul Rasheed Maina and the credibility gap. There is a reason the West has a legal and judicial process for all suspects including a terrorist. It is not only to deter but also to discover and investigate with a view to preventing future occurrence.

    • okenwa

Police can’t catch them alive because top security personnels are behind the criminals and won’t want to be exposed during interrogation.

  • Peter

Good work by our security. It baffles me when rivers man commits crime people say they are ibos. And no rivers man will contradict the allegation. But when its about good news. People will call them rivers or Niger deltas, and will use every avenue to prove that ikweres are not IBO’s. Honestly we are confused in this country.

  • Mentus

The security agencies must aim at capturing these suspected criminals and not kill them.
Besides affording them the opportunity to get vital information from the suspects, there is the slightest chance that an innocent person could be caught up in the shoot to kill which is their tactics.
I also suspect the two others said to have died on the way to hospital were not given the chance to even get there, they would have been killed on the way as well. All this killings and by the way this is not judicial because there has not been any trail, cannot be good for the country. Civilisation demands that even the perceived notorious criminal be given a chance to have a fair trial. This is not to say I am defending the murderers.
It is also pertinent to say that no Fulani person ever caught for the massacre of unarmed innocent individuals has ever been jailed let alone killed. In many cases they are left to be ‘at large’ for ever. So security forces now you have dealt with Rivers State killers, do the same to the herdsmen killers and prosecute their instigators who are in Abuja and very well known to yourselves and the government according to Ortom.

    • ed

Wako and other stand still situations happened in America.
As a matter of fact it happens everywhere and everyday. That’s where law enforcement agencies are confronted with ready to fight to dead criminals.
That in many cases results in the dead of criminal or the law enforcement officials.
The public should support the law enforcement officer unless we’re presented with abuse of power which hasn’t been evident here.
