One case of Monkeypox has been recorded in Akwa Ibom State, an official has confirmed.

At least 13 people suspected to be affected by the viral disease are on admittance in hospitals in neighbouring Bayelsa and Rivers states.

The Commissioner for Information in the Akwa Ibom, Charles Udoh, in a statement issued in Uyo, confirmed the single case. He also said that the state government was investigating two more cases suspected to be monkeypox.

“Monkeypox currently has no treatment and no vaccine,” Mr. Udoh said. “It looks like small pox but the rashes are larger while the disease is milder.”

“The era of avoiding excessive handshake, regular hand-washing and abstinence from bush meat is here again.

“We will provide more information subsequently,” the commissioner said.

The recent incident of the virus was first reported in Bayelsa last week with a medical doctor and 10 others quarantined.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the number of suspected cases in Bayelsa increased to 13. Three suspected cases were later reported in Rivers State.

Samples from suspected victims in Bayelsa and Rivers have been sent to the World Health Organisation, WHO laboratory in Dakar, Senegal for confirmation.

After the first report of the suspected cases in Bayelsa, the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole and the Executive Director of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, had called for calm among Nigerians saying the government is taking the required steps to manage the disease and to prevent further spread.

  • i just dey ask

    EDITOR, SIR,

Is monkey pox more important than the $25 billion raid of the treasury by President Buhari

and his robbing partner called Alhaji Baru – who is the Group Managing Director of NNPC?

    • Forensico

      @I just dey ask;

Of course President Buhari who’s been deaf and dumb since Thursday when
this $25 billion scandal broke out is only being clever by half, just by half only.
Muhamadu Buhari wants to appear to Nigerians as innocent neutral party in
this virtual theft of the treasury, but he is not neutral. Buhari was contrarily an
active participant all through the fraud. It was Buhari who signed the $25
billion contracts in violation of Nigeria’s Procurement Act.

It was Buhari who crookedly failed or refused to obtain federal
executive council approval for these illegal contracts, which would have
entailed his attaching a summary of preceding bids and tenders to the final
proposals for award. But since no bids or tenders preceded these illegal
contracts, Buhari hid away the contracts from the Board of NNPC; hid away
the contracts from the supervising Minister of State for Petroleum, and hid
away the illegal contract details from the federal executive council of
Ministers. In effect, the worst act of corruption in the history of Nigeria
      occurred in Muhamadu Buhari’s hands.

      • K. Gbegbon

IF BUHARI WERE HONEST HE WOULD HAVE
TOLD THE FEDERAL COUNCIL OF MINISTERS THAT THE $25 BILLION CONTRACTS DID NOT GO
THROUGH ANY BIDDING PROCESS OR ANY AUCTION PROCESS REQUIRED BY LAW; AND HE
WOULD HAVE FURTHER DISCLOSED THAT NEITHER THE MINISTER OF STATE SUPERVISING THE
NNPC WAS IN THE KNOW, NOR, WAS THE BOARD OF NNPC AWARE OF THESE CONTRACTS AT
        ALL.

      • Decimator

You are being economical with your choice of words please.

This is simply high way robbery in governance!!

        Period.

  • deri best
