Why I was stoned by my constituents – Senator

The senator, who alongside other public officials, was stoned by irate protesters in his constituency has given reasons for the Saturday incident.

Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina south) blamed his political opponents for the disruption of Saturday’s All Progressives Congress, APC, rally in Funtua.

Amiru Tukur, the member representing Bakori/Danja federal constituency in the House of Representatives also narrowly escaped the mob action at the rally in Funtua, Katsina

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that it took a combined team of security personnel to rescue notable politicians, including the governor’s entourage, as they came under attack from protesters.

Stones and shoes were reportedly used in attacking the dignitaries.

Some vehicles in the entourage of the governor were smashed by irate youths while security personnel had to use tear-gas to disperse the crowds and free the dignitaries.

The event, according to NAN, was an APC rally where the ruling party was accepting defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) and other parties into its fold.

The event however ended abruptly.

Reports say trouble started when some youths started chanting “Bamaso Abu Ibrahim’’ (We don’t want Senator Abu Ibrahim) and then started throwing stones and shoes at dignitaries and entertainers invited to perform at the event.

Mr, Tukur, the Representative from the area, reportedly sustained injuries while Mr. Ibrahim, along with some of his aides and supporters, who were trying to rescue the senator, were also assaulted.

In an interview with NAN on Monday, Mr. Ibrahim who is the Senate committee chairman on Police Affairs said he is hale and hearty and was unharmed.

He said Funtua residents are peace loving, noting that he would neither be distracted nor succumb to the antics of political thugs.

The politician said he is committed to proactive representation of his people and works for their upliftment by pursuing development programmes in the interest of the constituency and nation at large.

He said disruptions at political events are normal, especially as the APC was receiving hundreds of defectors from different political groups, who chanted the praises of their respective political leaders.

He alleged that the disruption was from political opponents looking for recognition at all costs and enjoined party loyalists to disregard their antics.

“I have contested and won elections in all my polling units at various times without a single record of using thugs or rigging elections,” Mr. Ibrahim said.

He noted that some people had contested with him and lost elections and they always challenged his victory at various quarters but failed, stressing that the use of thugs should be condemned in the interest of democracy.

The senator enjoined the people to vote wisely based on candidates records of achievements and counselled politicians to promote virtues and prudent governance.

He pledged to continue with his efforts of improving the welfare of the people.

The lawmaker said in a fortnight, he plans to unveil a skill empowerment training programme for about 600 youth beside the ongoing provision of 750 wells with 750 water pumping machines for irrigation farming in the constituency.

He said a free eye treatment in which about 515 people underwent surgeries while 330 persons received medicated glasses and 1,908 others were treated for various eye defects was conducted this month.

Last year, Mr. Ibrahim said, he sponsored the training of 1,775 persons in various small scale businesses that included soap and pomade makings, livestock and poultry keepings, food processing, perfume and cream makings, decoration and air freshener making as well as animal feeds processing.

The beneficiaries were from Funtua, Faskari, Kankara, Kafur, Dandume, Sabuwa, Malumfashi, Musawa, Bakori, Danja and Matazu local government areas in Katsina south senatorial district.

    • new republic

In Nigeria of today, senators are like toilet.

      • omobabalemomu

My Bro, they are worse than that. They are terrible dude.

      • musa aliyu

My brother we don’t want any legislation. Period. All federal and state houses should be closed

  • Ibrahim Ahmed

The era of politics by just anyone with a big purse and no plans is coming to an end in Naija,It is a lesson to people who want power but have nothing to offer but a title before their names as the achievements or big houses and cars. The Nigerian masses are really telling you to perform or better still allow someone with something to offer.

    • Freedomfighter

I like the way you speak, “coming to an end” which is based on hope resulting from one event and not on reality on ground. Reality is before talking about free and fair elections in Nigeria, your people in the north prefer to vote based on religion or recommendation by a religious or tradition leader and not based on merit and competence and this is why you see animals holding political offices in Nigeria. This ethnic and religious consideration in politics is still very active and present in Nigeria most especially the north so therefore whatever you say is “coming to an end” is only just starting until we remove religious and ethnic divide in our politics

      • Mizch

Remember former Gov, Barkin Zuwo. Thanks.

      • Dan maikoko

Is it based on this same ethnic consideration that Abiola beat Bashir Tofa in Kano during the june 12 elections? For your information Bashir Tofa was beaten at the Gandun Albasa ward of Kano city (where his residence is still located) and later beaten in all of Kano state.
Both Bashir Tofa and General Sani Abacha were originally of the Kanuri stock yet because the north is completely de-tribalised they were accepted as bonafide citizens of Kano. Ever heard of Major Kaduna Nzeogwu? How many Major Enugu Awwalu have you ever heard of?

        • Dan Arewa

May be there is another Kaduna in Enugu!?? Just saying!

        • Freedomfighter

You are really funny, is Gandun Albasa ward the only voting ward in kano state, I am talking about a whole region and you are trying to make a failed point using one ward. Did Abiola finally win in the whole Kano state?

          • Abdulkadir Bello

            Yes Abiola won in Kano

          • Dan maikoko

So you were not aware that Abiola won in kano and the north as a whole? I was referring to gandun albasa to buttress the point that no politician has won a national election when he lost in his ward.

          • Freedomfighter

Lol would Abiola have won in Kano without the support of Northern gods and lords like Shehu Musa Yaradua and Atiku Abubakar?

  • Usman

    Tell the truth

  • musa aliyu

Continue deceiving yourself. All Nigerians fare any sinnators or legislooters to come and see what Will happen to them! We already know u’re the enemies of Nigeria.

    • dele20

The reason why Abu Ibrahim was stoned was because of the hatred the masses had for Bukola Saraki, the Senate President

  • Frank Bassey

    Yeye people!

  • Dan maikoko

Those whom the gods want to destroy they first make mad. Abu Ibrahim is mad. For someone who barely escape with his life to be able to create a political cocoon in which he will utter so much rubbish shows that he is unrepentant and incapable of sober reflection.
Some food for though Mallam Abu. Those of your constituents who are able to face the guns bravely must be really motivated by your hatred. So why is there no comparable following from your supporters that will save you? The mob were careful and selective in their attack as they single you out for their stones, those who got hit were trying to help you. So dont spew all the rubbish of ” I was not injured”. You are gravely injured if you have a conscience.

  • Yego V

Try it again next time, and you’ll explain why you were killed. Every rope has its tension limit

  • SAM .A

SenatorAbu Ibrahim , you didn’t have a physical injury, but you have a psychological one , a big wound in your mind and conscience, you guys aren’t fulfilling the promises u gave to your constituencies , hence the anger . Your days of reckoning is at hand , They will vote you out next election
