PDP died after my exit – Obasanjo

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, died after he and the party’s former National Chairman, Ahmadu Ali, left it.

He stated this in Abeokuta at a symposium titled ‘Purpose and Utilitarian Values of Presidential Libraries’, held as part of the programme for his 80th birthday celebration.

Mr. Obasanjo, who was the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the troubled main opposition party, was replying to comments by Mr. Ali about their past relationship in government.

He quickly added that Nigeria would not die lik‎e the PDP.

Mr. Obasanjo, who was elected president twice on the platform of the PDP, stressed that the party is dead, sunk and gone.

He recalled that he asked Mr. Ali to lead the party because of his integrity, saying PDP was controlling 30 out of the 36 states.

He said Mr. Ali as the national chairman ensured the stability and effectiveness of PDP, and lamented that the party is now down and out following an intractable internal crisis.

“Ahmadu Ali is truthful and that was why I brought him to head the PDP and all went well. When Ahmadu Ali was the national chairman. We were controlling 30 out of the 36 states. When Ahmadu and I left, the fortune of the PDP began to sink”, he said.

“Whether you believe it or not, today PDP is sunk and gone. May the fortune of Nigeria never sink like that of the PDP” he said, with the audience responding in a thunderous “Amen.”

Mr. Obasanjo while also responding to encomiums poured on him by dignitaries at the event, said the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library was established to correct one of the mistakes he made when he first led Nigeria as a military Head of State.

The mistake, he said, was not collecting and archiving materials connected to his time during the civil war.

“Somebody among the speakers said God has always given me the opportunity to correct my wrongs. I will say God has done that for me not in all cases but in most cases and this Presidential Library is actually an act of God which he has given to me to correct one of my mistakes of the past and I have said this very often.

“I was in the war front, it was very one significant thing in my life and in the life of Nigeria. I was military Head of State, it was one significant thing in my life and in the life of Nigeria.

“But I was not as mindful as I should have been about collecting materials that were connected with those events, the war front and civil war both on the vandals’ side – we called them rebels’ side or if you like the Biafrans’ side – they called us vandals, we called them rebels.

“But we did collect something. When I was also the military Head of State, I didn’t pay much attention to collect materials, where I should have paid attention to. So, by 1988, it occurred to me that these were mistakes, I looked at some of the materials we got from the war fronts, they were in very bad state of neglect so what I did was to try and micro-film what we could micro-film.

“I also learnt a lesson; when you are in a position to keep materials and preserve them for prosterity, you should do so and I never knew there will be another opportunity. So, God created another opportunity for me to correct the mistakes of the past.

“God is the God and for some of us He is not God of second chance but God of many chances and I will be eternally grateful to God for the opportunity he has given me.

“But more importantly, whatever I might have achieved, I take responsibility; but whatever I might have achieved, it would not have been possible without the people who have helped me in life to be able to achieve what I have achieved.

“Take the Presidential Library for example, if not for the members of Board of Trustees, I would have fallen by the roadside and that would have been another mistake, because it got to a stage that things were rough, things were rough and we were just putting heads together. It is God of many chances.”

He urged the youth who attended the programme not to be mindful of their current positions, whether poor or weak, assuring that if he (given his poor background) could make it this far, they can also make it.

He advised them to share whatever ideas they have with others, for the growth and development of Nigeria.

The former President said having passed the kiln of life, including marking time in prison without being killed by his jailers, he has nothing more to fear, save God.‎

In his remarks, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,UN, Andrew Young, said that without Obasanjo, Africa might still be in a desperate position.

“It is time for Nigeria to realise and make amends where it is lagging behind”, Mr. Young said.

“There is no human being in Africa that has experienced what Obasanjo has gone through in the last 50 years. One thing about him is that he is the same way, same person, whether in New York, UN, World Bank, White House or China. He does not change. He does not give a damn who he makes mad,” he said.

He said Mr. Obasanjo should be celebrated, adding that “the Presidential Library will help others to understand his work.”

Similarly, Tracy Roosevelt, grand daughter of a former U.S. President, Franklin D Roosevelt, explained that a Presidential Library is a place, meant to bring together the memories of the past and to also bring men and women together for higher goals.

Ms. Roosevelt said Mr. Obasanjo gave the gift of the library to his people, to share the memories of his past with his people.

“There are 14 presidential libraries in the the United States of America, but the first Presidential Library in Africa was created by Obasanjo in Abeokuta,” she said.

        Premium Times Editor,

Face the elephant in the room

There’s no appointee of Muhamadu Buhari
who’s considered a thinking person or a morally outstanding person.. If a
government comprises of such near retards where’s the hope for change for
improvement? There’s no such hope. It’s even far worse that Buhari himself is
not putatively a deep thinker. Ensconced on gold-tasseled couch in London,
Buhari is just watching television and drawing full salaries for doing nothing.

Muhamadu Buhari will predictably be in limbo
and in doldrums for another three months because his aides use the imminent
closure of Abuja airport next week (for the next two months) as alibi for Buhari’s
absconding from official duty. Till today all he’s said is that he’s undertaking
diagnostic tests but he has never said he’s ailed by anything or sick. For how
long can Nigerians bear the oppressive dead weight of Buhari as a do-nothing
president before declaring him incapacitated under the 1999 Constitution?

Baba bring back our #300,000,000,000 stolen under ur supervision in the name of road construction. You should be ashamed of the socalled Presidential Library, build with the proceeds of Presidential Exttortion. The PDP started sinking in 2003 with your 3rd term (Life Presidency Agenda). Just respect your self and keep mute.

Hate him or like him, the moment baba Obasanjo appears on the front page of a newspaper, most people would read.

@Sam——–Madness unlimited—–when u have a man who sleeps with his daughter-inlaw—–he hardly ever watches his tongue when talking in public-In the African Culture such is not supposed to rear their ugly head in public—–Cause these types of satanic humans-can be as vulgar as one can Imagine— Think of Obama saying the very day he léft the democratic party that produced the first African American President—the party died—–America will vibrate to its very foundation–But in Nigeria anything goes———Besides———-Who is Obj to say such rubbish-in Africa-besides his work with the CIA?–Was Obj not in prison when PDP WAS CREATED—-?——Only for him to use the Yorubas in him to pull down the structures of the party because of his failed 3rd term bid–and an Insane Nigerian like Sam is backing such Luciferic assertions—here?

General Olusegun Obasanjo exemplifies how inferiority complex can damage the human mind
and impede it from acquiring knowledge for mental growth. I live in Europe. I have read the memoirs
of the highly cerebral Helmut Schmidt whom General Obasanjo wants to be associated with here,
as a friend, but I never saw a line in those memoirs where Helmut Schmidt ever mentioned Obasanjo.

Anyone living in Europe will understand that it would have
belittled Helmut Schmidt to be found in Obasanjo’s type of uneducated circle. It is not racism, but class.
General Olusegun Obasanjo has no class, ideas or mental sagacity. He just doesn’t belong anywhere,
besides Ibogun village where he was born by a fisherman. Nelson Mandela never mentioned Obasanjo
in his own memoirs there. So defenestrating and sequestrating Obasanjo from memory by expulsion
is not racism, but a compelling act by any self-respecting person.

When the GLOBAL ELDERS was formed as a forum of respectable past presidents, with Jimmy Carter and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (ex officio) as members, and with Nelson Mandela as initiator, Obasanjo was barred
and excluded. Yet, for lack of shame, Obasanjo has till today kept dropping the names of Desmond Tutu, Nelson
Mandela, Jimmy Carter and Helmut Schmidt, all of whom did enough to show Obasanjo that he is not wanted
      in their decent circle.

LETTER TO MY FATHER……By Iyabo Obasanjo

““You (General Olusegun Obasanjo) are one of those
petty people who think the progress and success of another takes from you. You
try to overshadow everyone around you, before you, and, after you. You are the
prototypical ‘Mr. Know it all’. You’ve never said ‘I don’t know’ on any topic –
ever. Of course this means you surround yourself with idiots who will agree
with you on anything since they need you for financial gain whilst you need
        them for your insatiable ego.

Your attitude is a reflection of the country. It is not
certain which came first – your attitude seeping into the country’s psyche or
the country accepting your irresponsible behaviour for so long. I don’t blame
you for the many atrocities you have been able to get away with because Nigerians
were your enablers every step of the way.

The whole Nigerian system – including the public themselves,
wants oppressors – not people working for their collective progress, and so,
when no one is planning the future of a country, such a country can have no
future. Nigeria has descended into a hellish reality where – for smart and
capable people to ‘survive’ and have their daily bread – they must prostrate
        for imbeciles”.

Naive fellow, you are a vile man and that is why you refuse to acknowledge that we read; even about the man whose Agbo jedi wife in Ibadan brought her ex-husband to do her in her new home and the marriage was dissolved yesterday.
Obasanjo is not more important than that man in the scale of news readership?

      • Julius

Hahahahaha, you are such a retard , I bet you did not read about Ibo woman that set her husband up to be robbed and killed for only N 2,000. I guess that’s what an Ibo man is worth..smdh !

  • Gary

Baba, the seeds of the destruction of the PDP were sown by you and Ahmadu Ali: corruption, lack of internal democracy and a top-down structure you purposefully set up to run a one-party state.
Party primaries became a sham as Ali, Anenih and others in the leadership substituted nominees with their wives and family members to INEC. Party loyalty was bought in the states and NASS with bags of money as bribes. Anyone who crossed you or the stalwarts were impeached or rigged out of office.
Yes, the whole edifice collapsed once you failed to achieve the Third Term agenda (thanks to Atiku) and Gould not remotely control the party under Yar Adua and GEJ.
You had a chance to become Nigeria’s Mandela but hubris and your temperament got in the way.

    • Sir Louis

Thanks Gary for a good post. Atiku will get his reward in due course for his dogged defence of democracy by frustrating Obasanjo’s third term plot in alliance with progressive minded Nigerians.

      • Julius

        Really ? Atiku .

Obj—-should not forget for PDP—he would have died in Prison—————or executed by firing squad——-Certain African leaders can be very ungrateful to even their creator because of their links with cult groups—That is why Leopold Senghor once described Obj as the most ungrateful african leader to walk the surface of the earth——–Here is a man who was slated for execution——The entire world leaders pleaded with Abacha–to forgive him—-Abacha–refused—–Instead of being grateful to God for sparing his life-and making him become president————Obj is now becoming very boastful——-the usual Yoruba way————-Cursing the very party————————-PDP————— that helped to rescue his Yoruba head from the hands of his Fulani ati Kanuri masters who till tomorrow want him dead————–Clear as day light that Obj is the brain behind the crisis–in PDP——–Every former head of state has a childhood story to tell–his or her audience—-But that of Obj–is gradually becoming too boring for our taste——All Power belongs to God——-and not man————————-Seems Obj is yet to learn his lessons in life–in spite of his age——OVER 80————————Again all Power belongs to God and not man–Obj

  • Mamman Bako

It is a shame the Obasanjo will diminish the aspirations of fellow citizens because he doesn’t belong to their association, for him it is not good if he is not part of it, it seems. This is not good citizenship and it is expected that he should know better. This is profane and unexamplary of leader whom life has given everything, yet he stabs, in the heart, things of life that made him.

    • share Idea

This is a big challenge to PDP and Obasanjo will be alive to see PDP turn back to its past glory.

Obasanjo is the type that thinks that the world revolves around him. I am appalled by the kind of statements that comes out of his mouth.

      • Sir Louis

Even when OBJ’s assertion about PDP is offensive, one prays that nothing will make PDP return to its past glory. The PDP by the time it lost the 2015 elections, had become a great evil! The party laid the foundation for the economic hole that Nigeria today finds itself.

  • Iskacountryman

na only pdp….nigeria would die after your exit…

    • Intrepid

Yea, because the m0nkey face is Nigeria’s Alpha & Omega. No wonder his daughter finished him up by describing him as megalomaniac.

      • Iskacountryman

obasanjo would consider that a complement…

    • Julius

You will die before that !

Premium Times is worse than General Obasanjo

I just want the local and international community to know something.
Premium Times is worse than General Olusegun Obasanjo. Let’s say
Obasanjo has 90% for bad things you have to give Premium Time 180%
of those bad things. We the people want to say the truth but Premium Times
will now put plaster in our mouth to force us to stop saying the truth. But why?
Premium Times has even put a dangerous software inside their chat room now.

If you want to say Obasanjo looted the treasury to send his 40 children abroad,
the software of Premium Times will now tell you very fat and big lies as follows:
“YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE THIS COMMENT”. But see O! The truth is that
you have just come back from work and you have not made any comment
today at all? Can you see how Premium Times destroys Nigeria much worse
than how Obasanjo became “grandfather of corruption” – according to the
Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria?

    • thusspokez

Premium Times will now tell you very fat and big lies as follows:

Hmmm, you are blaming the wrong people. The message you see comes from disqus — not Premium Times.

I am 100% certain that you had tried to post the exact message (1), more than once and on (2),the same forum. Disqus will prevent you from doing so. After all, what is the point of repeating yourself in the same conversation.

But here is a trick that you can use next time should you wish to repeat (say):

“For Obansajo, it is: Me, Myself, and I !”

Simply (1) change or (2) add a character or word to it and you will be OK! For example, mere adding another exclamation mark to the end of sentence will make it OK:

“For Obansajo, it is: Me, Myself, and I !!”

  • Intrepid

obasanjo, MEGALOMANIAC. Who said so? Iyabo Obasanjo.

  • Egbokodo andrew jolomi

Jonathan should know that the PDP he is trying to reconciled was killed by him, because when he went against the agreement he held with Obasanjo to go for just one tenure,he refused and later was defeated. That is what brought the party down.

  • Nkem

Has it occurred to anybody that Ahmadu Ali was chairman of Jonathan’s presidential campaign, the same one which Fani-Kayode and Nenadi Usman were director of communication and finance respectively? Has anyone also noticed that nobody has accused Ahmadu Ali of taking part in the sharing of the Dasuki money by the Jonathan campaign?
I am beginning to think that, sincerely, this may be one of the very few men of Nigeria politics.

  • Base Okonjo

So u are very happy that the party that picked u from prison to be their presidential candidate in 1999 is now dead and gone forever? Remember that u even attempted third tenure on the platform of this party. Suddenly it died after ur exit probably u couldn’t run the country from Ota

    • Julius

Genius, anybody should be happy if any political party is ruing the country like the pdp did. Don’t you think ?

  • D a n g o t e-C e m e n t

  • emmanuel

Here is a man who stole ballot boxes, swopped candidates in the PDP, eilimination anyone who hand some strength to muscle him in the party and took portion of what governors stole from their states and impeached those who refused to play games with him.
Uptil 2011, he still collected bribes from the likes of Uduaghan five days before election, in the guise of Agric consultancy with his animal feed company on Wempco Road, Ogba, Lagos but actually used to rig that election
Why would the party not die there after, when he held it together with false values and vices? Lots of his party men who never wanted anything to do with his occultic/Ogboni style were humilated.
Oh God our help in ages past, our hope in years to come, please deliver us from this distraction. He has contributed his negative quota to Nigeria, please take him away. He is long past 70 years, so his benefactors will not mourn, but we will celebrate!

    • Julius

What have you , your family and your worthless ilks contributed to the country ? Should we also pray for the good Lord to take you away ? Remember when you point a finger the rest are pointing at you. My hope is you won’t have hearth attack barking like a dog each time Obj says something. Your love ones, if you have any should get you some help..mental help !

  • Wale

All hail to the powerful OBJ. I thought the PDP decline has to do with the fact that most of our politicians cannot do without being associated with power at the centre for too long. The PDP lost power at the centre because of papa’s wrong choice of successors who mismanaged everything

  • Sir Louis

It is quite revealing to know that the PDP died after OBJ and Ahmadu Ali left the party. We thank OBJ for letting us know the truth. Its like OBJ and his Man Friday, Ahmadu Ali, in their manipulative ways, dug the grave of the party before they left!

    • Julius

Yeah and the genius like Jonathan they left behind finished the job. Smart comment from you ..right ?

  • Igbo-biafra co-op poor Jonathan and turn a national party into a regional one, God save us from the enemies within.
    – igbo-biafra must be forced out.

  • Julius

Oh wow !!. Obj said nothing that should result into name calling and insult but, as usual, we know the folks that will go into tailspin after reading this. Keep reading the comments people !!

  • FreeNigeria

Can someone please cage this old Otta ape. Please

  • Jaspa Matanga

No Sir, PDP died the moment you joined it.

  • Rommel

What ambassador Young said about OBJ is indisputable, the way he talks plainly and frankly in Abeokuta is the same way he addresses any world leader from any part of the world, you may dislike OBJ all you want but he is not timid, his international network remains impressive unlike some who are junketing and paying for kitchen recognition

Apart from the APC’s almajiris and paid e-rats on this forum, I can not imagine a reasonable person applauding a reckless statement from a man at 80, who is supposed the be an elder statesman. In Africa elders are respected. They come after kings and gods. However there two types of elders – responsible elders and irresponsible (agba – iya). The agba – iya enjoys no respect of his peers as well as the younger ones. Obasanjo is agba – iya.

there is no doubt that Obasano is the father of corruption and other heinous evils bedeviling the country. It may take days to list evils he has perpetrated against his own country. He is so slippery that is why it is so difficult to catch him red-handed in many atrocities he has been involved. Obasanjo was the best friend of Major Nzogwu. He was the IPO in the murder case of Bola Ige, Chief Dikibo and Williams. He destroyed the cases. He spent Nigerian hard earned billions to bribe for his third term agenda. This is old man who raped his son’s wife the effect which has rendered him demented.
