How EFCC recovered $9.8 million from Yakubu, Ex-NNPC GMD

The bundles of cash recovered from Former GMD of NNPC, Andrew Yakubu's residence

A special operation conducted by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 3 on a building belonging to a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu, in Kaduna, yielded the recovery of $9,772,800 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seven Two Thousand, Eight Hundred United States Dollars) and another sum of £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) cash.

The huge cash was hidden in a fire proof safe.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement that the surprise raid of the facility was sequel to an intelligence which the commission received about suspected proceeds of crime believed to be hidden in the slums of Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna.

On arrival at the facility, the caretaker of the house, one Bitrus Yakubu, a younger brother to Andrew Yakubu, disclosed that both the house and the safe where the money was found belong to his brother, Andrew Yakubu.

When the safe was opened it was discovered that it contained the sum of $9,772,800 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand, Eight Hundred United States Dollars) and another sum of £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling).

On February 8, 2017, Mr. Yakubu reported to the Commission’s Zonal office in Kano and made statement wherein he admitted ownership of the recovered money, claiming it was gift from unnamed persons.

He is currently assisting the investigation, Mr. Uwujaren said.

Who dashed you N3billion this man? See one of the causes of our problems in Nigeria.

    • Julius

The poor people of Nigeria…that’s who…no mind the bastard !

  • @Kazkanye

“Sadly, being an honest Nigerian is a lonely & excruciatingly difficult road to travel. Embrace, defend corruption & you’ll never walk alone.” ~ Lola Shoneyin

    God Bless Muhammadu Buhari!
    God Bless Magu!
    God Bless Nigeria!

  • Say the truth

No this cannot be. Northerners are the cleanest in this nation and that why PMB prefer them in places of trust. Kudos to the EFCC for this. I hope the informant will be well appreciated.

    • Julius

He was appointed under Jonathan. Is Diezani a Northerner ?

    • okpada

Christian, not northerner? He was an appointee of GEJ because he is Christian. God will help Nigeria

  • sammyctu ode

It’s time to disband NNPC. If yakubu who spent less than two years as GMD of NNPC, one can imagine how much obaseki, oniwon and other ex GMDs must have stolen. NNPC was created to help presidents(except PMB), government officials and politicians siphon our money at will. Jonathan and diezani did their own to a ridiculous extent cos their predecessors did same. What has been the contribution of NNPC to national development? NOTHING PERIOD! They have Nigerian gas which for over eight decades can’t come up with any gas policy despite all the so called fools there. At all their refineries contracts have always been manipulated through a corrupt bidding process where one contractor will collect letter headed papers of other contractors, make them sign, pay them upfront and use their papers to get inflated contracts. A contract that should be only N2M will now be N25M. NNPC can’t give us ordinary kerosene and fuel yet they have more than 30, 000 staff doing nothing and being paid fat salaries and pensions. It’s so sad for Nigerians and Nigeria.

  • kazkaz

As far as am concerned this is just a drop in the ocean. Until we start killing looters in this country nothing will change. God what have we done to deserve this.

    • Julius

I’ve suggested we should use the kidnapping boys to go after these people.Pay them a percentage of the recovery. No EFCC wasting money chasing them and we prosecute them after .

      • kazkaz

I prefer outright killing. We need to take back our country from those mindless criminals.

        • Julius

After recovering all our looted money from them…I agree !

    • Sword of Damocles

If you only knew how TRUE this statement is.
Nigerians do not appreciate the full IMPLICATIONS OF STEALING FROM YOUR OWN COUNTRY(a country full of poor hungry, suffering & DESPERATE people). It is treason, betrayal, perfidy, the LOWEST OF THE LOW. I challenge ANYONE to state the case why these crimes should not be viewed as GRAVE offences against the State?
this is $9 approx., imagine the $billions associated with the names, GEJ, Madueke, Jide Omisore, kole aluko, Danjuma & his oil blocks, IBB, abdulasami abubakar, Saraki,. It is SELF EVIDENT that death/a bullet is too good for these “patriots”. but one day we shall “accommodate” them & their families, ON MY LATE MOTHER……

    the evil that men do

Unbelievable! You know in China he would have his a** shot for committing this crime. So, what are the ramifications here?

I have an idea….we should search everyone who has served in the government going back to at least 1999.

All of them Politicians from 1960 till Date Stole and Are Still Looting, especially All the Ex Mds of nnpc.
Yakubu’s is Small compared to How Much Yar Adua, ex nnpc MD stole years back, he was just a Smart thief unlike Yakubu!! Who remembers Alhaji Alhaji an Ex Minister, Who lost 5 m pounds in his London Hotel Room during Babangida regime?
Should We Talk About Yakubu Dogara , Who built a Billion Naira Mansion at Asokoro under 6 months!!!
Is it Buratai Who bought a 2 m $ Mansion in Dubai just over a Year Ago?
They Are ALL Thieves , pdp or Apc no difference.

      • Sir Louis

They should all be made to account for the loot.

  • Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan

The rate at which both local currencies and foreign currencies flow among the state-oil-minister and top officials of NNPC is shocking despite the widespread national impoverishment caused by the deep-recession that caused the rising sky-high of food-stuff prices and house-hold essential needs, of average Nigerians, both ex-GMD and state oil minister and top officials of NNPC, are still living in opulence.
There is collapsed global oil price that affected most oil producing countries around the world even middle-east, that most staff-members of oil departments have been rationalized and salaries and allowances have been reduced, still ex-GMD and state oil minister and other top officials of NNPC, in Nigeria, are living in opulence.
***Anti-corruption agencies-EFCC and ICPC, must focus their anti-corruption fight on NNPC and Nigeria police establishments in order to cleanse our public institutions of endemic corruption..

  • Bright Henry

This is how Nigeria was raped anyhow. Yet they want Buhari to perform magic in under two years. This is only a group managing Director o. What about people like Diezani. I wonder how much they stole.

  • Obosi Warrior

Typical example of why they wish “him” dead.
God will continue to save you “sir,” you came to save this nation but they prefer the other way, the old way of “stealing is not corruption. ”

“This man just stole the money, therefore it is not corruption, allow him to go, and make sure he has his money back,” ( Author- Goodluck Ebele Johnathan, was a president of Nigeria) .

  • loveNigeria

Its only the enemy of human not even Nigeria alone, yes enemy of human would not appreciate President Buhari. Anybody by now still have contempt toward Buhari should please think again. This man is helping the Nigerian youth for the future, hence his work is commendable. We have got govts come and go, and no one ever tried this way to check and prosecute corruption in Nigeria.

I am using this opportunity to appeal to doubting thomas to please have a change of mind and let wish Buhari well for this job for the future of the generations of Nigerian children. He may not be perfect, but he has scored points in checking corruptions. Here is a man fighting Boko haram which was perceived to be aligned with his religion, he was being attacked for south Kaduna issue perceived to be aligned with christian killings, he has touched judiciary, former ministers, malabu, dasukigate and lots more, in all, he has touched looters from north, east, west and south, both and across all ethnics and religious affiliate in Nigeria, what else do you want him to do.

God in his infinite mercy would safe the life of President Muhammadu Buhari. God bless Nigeria

Leave All the Political Preaching Abeg! GEJ, BUHARI simply No Difference! Desperation for Power is What Will Ruin them Both

  • Harry

These were the Men that finished Nigeria under GEJ.

    • Sir Louis

Correct. PMB to the rescue. President Buhari’s effort to rid Nigeria of corruption and expose corrupt person’s, is a gift from heaven.

  • nawaila

lalalalalala……… inhumanity to man! what will you do with all of this my brother? millions re dying every day with hunger and you ve this with you?

  • Angry Niaja

This is the reason our refineries have been left comatose, they don’t want them to function so that they themselves are the ones lifting the crude oil. Can you imagine the environment he has hidden the money. I think all previous GMDs of NNPC should be recalled and made to cough up what they have stolen. Yakubu’s excuse as these being gifts is the same argument by Patience Jonathan, perhaps they were both tutored by the same person. Bunch of idiots

    • Sir Louis

Well said. All previous GMD’S of the NNPC and ED’s of the corporation should be investigated. THEY CONNIVED AND Defrauded the country of its oil revenue which later, they describe as ”Gifts”.

  • Odus

My God! No one will ever suspect this community have enough money to transform it to 2nd Dubai!
Why my people? WHY? You brought nothing to this world and you won’t take anything with you.
You see where it all ended now? All your worries and sleepless night.
Ok, tell the world what you did to get such gift!!!

    • aisha ani

Time to make Jonathan pay for crimes against humanity.

  • Wale

Learn one or two things from China and see where they are today.
    nough said.

    • taiwo

You wan start to dey kill dem?

      • FreeNigeria

No, that should have been done with their families long time ago.

      • kazkaz

Yes that is the only as deterrent to other would be looter. Kill them and their families. If someone buy a house way beyond his earning the family will be the first to report.

        • get your facts obviously have none. lol

  • Rommel

And Nigerians are busy insulting PMB for dollar scarcity,Nigerians, this is part of your Goodluck Jonathan era oil boom money that was never used to do anything in Nigeria.

    • aboki

      Kai Jamaa!
NIGERIANS what kind of people we are?
Some WAILERS may justify illegality by interpreting the action of EFCC as witch hunting.
We’ve witnessed the grand reception accorded to James Ibori with thanks giving services by the people he drained.
Some SECTIONS of Nigeria are being mischievous and abusive to present Government despite it’s achievement at all lavels of governance.
They remained mute with this discovery I mean those uncultured WAILERS as to them is a non issue.
They only participate in an issue that would bring discord and hatred among NIGERIANS.
      Nigeria we hail thee!

      • Tunsj

You haven’t seen anything yet. I’m an IT Professional and I have traveled around the world. Our reputation around the world has been damaged.

  • FreeNigeria

This is not corruption or stealing, this is ultra wickedness. This is why our country is so backward, one man trying to take what belongs to everybody for his own good. people are dying from poverty and sickness, this man is celebrated by the same people his wickedness is killing daily.

    • Peter_Edo

      Who is Ibori

      • aisha ani

        Ibori ke?

  • taiwo

It appears FG’s new whistle blowing strategy has started yielding results. Hopefully more whistle-blowers will come forward with intelligence that will expose more of this.

Having said this, I hope the FG will not renege on rewarding such whistle-blowers with a per centage of such recovered loot.

BTW, do you know ‘loot’ is an Indian word and not Western or European?

    • Rrrr

Infact any one that blow this one has catch a big fish

      • kazkaz

I dey envy the guy already.

    • Peter_Edo

There is already tell that the whistleblower will get 5%. From some confirmed sources

    • Sword of Damocles

Yup, i think i found out watching PBS documentary on “looting” of India by the British Empire a few weeks back

      • taiwo

Could you let me know the actual title of the documentary on? Hopefully I can catch up with it on YouTube. Thanks.

  • Rrrr

People are just criminally minded. He has this money and so many youths are there suffering in his home town in Kogi state.

    • paul irumundomon

Look at the road bank , sorry house, is a dirt road. He could not even paint the house or fix the road.

  • Odus

……just one more thing, EFCC should cooperate with every Nigerian locksmith – trust me, you find more. I guarantee it.

  • Paul Graham

PMB is working but bad belle people are too blind to see and stone deaf to hear!

  • Okokondem

Question is now what? I’m assuming we get the money back and presume that’s all he stole. Then the case goes to notorious Nigerian court system where cases are adjourned adinfitum. Without any severe consequences the act is bound to be replicated sooner or later.

I say take a page from China.

    • Tunsj

Couldn’t agree more. I can bet you that the majority of these corrupt Judges want some of the money.

  • Omooba Adekunle Orafidiya

I can bet with my life that EFCC operatives have stolen at least $200k from the money.

    • temitope adedeji

      Go ahead…

  • Kenechi Casmir

Massive corruption in Nigeria. Why central we go in recession?

  • Okokondem

Just curious, why wasn’t Mr Yakubu’s photo included in this PT report? The EFCC aids these criminals in maintaining anonymity, and here PT that had the opportunity to show Nigerians what this thief looks like also failed to do so.

After I saw his photo in another Nigerian daily that carried the same news, I decided to Google him and surprisingly there he was. The public need to know what these crooks look like so at least he can be shamed wherever he is recognized.

  • Adeola

I love this type of whitch hunting.

    • aboki

please be fair to Nigeria and shame the devils and love Nigeria

  • Adeola

Its very clear now that some $20billion nnpc money was missing some time ago.

  • Timmi

While it is very disheartning to see one person with so much cash, and one cannot condole this kind of criminal behaviour. The reality of the matter is that this money is less than 10% commission on a single cargo of crude oil during the period in question. As GMD of NNPC these people have always had a certain undisclosed allocation of Crude Oil. The question that should be asked, is why did he feel the need to keep this hidden in cash. All people in power and positions of power globally, in developing countries and most importantly in Africa have sums far, far greater than this as their slush fund in case they need to make a quick getaway, (Gadaffi’s sons were found with over $400 million cash on them when they were captured, Charles Taylor went into exile with more than $100 million cash in his possession.

You can guarantee that all the people that are being exposed in Nigeria at the moment are the ones who have fallen out of favour with the current administration. They are not the only ones who have amassed such mind boggling illicit wealth.

    • Sir Demo

Clap for yourself! See what kainkain have done to your brain!

      • Olukayode

A man was recently jailed by an Ikeja High Court 5 years for defraudig the Federal Govt of 20 million naira in collaboration with another person. If people like this are not jailed it will be a shame indeed.

  • Sir Demo

It will so tempting to just take a bundle of that $100 bills. Five of a tack of 100 notes s $50,000 about N60 million! Salary of how many thousands of teachers is that?

  • Anasieze Donatus

Never will you get a comment from PMB haters now ,all they are waiting for is his corpse or next bad news about PMB and you will hear them become Authority on National issues.

  • Sir Louis

The recovered money is more than the budget of several countries the World over. Mr Yakubu should be thoroughly investigated, there could be more that he stashed away. He should be made to disclose the identity of those who gave him so much gratification as a Public servant. However, Kudos to EFCC. Ibrahim Magu deserves not only confirmation but national award. The commission should ensure that these heartless thieves who brought poverty and ruin to our people do not return to society as free men.

    • McTunji Orhlagocke

Absolutely I agreed with you brother!

  • if someone stole and laundered that much it makes you an accomplice for allowing it. You’ve written this for years so the question should be, why wait? if you knew and were serious about prosecuting a crime he’d be in jail by now. so, go get em and stop writing here.

  • Powerlessconscious

  • Mona

I feel bad for Nigeria. The rich will steal and stack up so much money and the poor will sit and argue and take sides with who is the good rich one? GEJ and Buhari aren’t your brothers or fathers. Leaders owe it to the people to do their jobs, we shouldn’t be more concerned with who is better but with how our lives (the masses) can get better economically and otherwise. People have stolen and are still stealing plenty in Nigeria.
