A total of 234 people were killed and buried after a Nigerian military jet mistakenly bombed a camp occupied by persons displaced by Boko Haram, an official has said.

The Chairman of Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, Babagana Malarima, said 234 persons were buried in Rann village, which is in the local government, after the January 17 bombing.

The Nigerian military and the federal government have described the bombing as an accident and expressed solidarity with the victims. An Air Force investigation team has since arrived Borno to investigate the attack.

The military said the jet was meant to target suspected Boko Haram members when it accidentally bombed the camp.

Mr. Malarima said two other injured persons died in the hospital after they were flown by helicopter from the camp.

He disclosed this on Friday when the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, visited Rann.

The council chairman is the first government official to give a major casualty figure after the Doctors without Borders, MSF, announced on the day of the attack that 52 persons died and 120 others injured.

The MSF later said the death toll could be as high as 174.

“We buried 234 corpses in Rann after the bombs were dropped on the IDP camp,” Mr. Malarima said. “We have two others injured persons that died while in hospital in Maiduguri.”

Several of the wounded were flown by helicopter to Maiduguri due to the bad and insecure state of roads that link the Borno Capital with Kala-Balge, where the Rann camp is located.

The council chairman said the families of the dead persons as well as the injured ones are asking for compensation from the Nigerian government.

The victims, mostly Muslims, have not stated the terms of compensation. But in Islam compensation for manslaughter is paid to the tune of 100 camels or its equivalent, which could be about N40 million person.

Should the victims insist on payment by Islamic standard, which is sometimes used in parts of Northern Nigeria, the federal could pay as much as N9.5 billion compensation.

    DEAR SIR,

How many Nigerians will the Buhari government kill,
before both the international media and the local will call out the regime for what it is?
Journalists are being arrested on a whim, children and women in refugee camp are bombed,
religionists on procession are shot dead in hundreds in Kaduna state and buried in mass grave?
What next is the Buhari government expected to do to warrant sanctioning reaction from the world?

    • O’ Jose

…….My people……it’s not looking good O……Buhari is losing goodwill very fast……
      ….more than he’s gaining it…..and now…after 17 months…..he has negatives ……
      ………..numbering enough to write a book……….from his blunders overseas…..to this….
…huge suspicion… that he’s another Fulani Islamist hegemonist and northern tribalist……
……….but, that’s a smelly body odor to carry around…….if it also includes…… as it does…..
…….jumping the window of parliament to forge appropriation bills…….. and merely winking….
…at the genocide of 300+ Shiite Muslims, and, winking at the murders committed daily……..
………………….by the rifle-bearing mad and maddening Fulani herdsmen……………

I said it here , that this gov was lying when they said it was only 50 , my guess is that they would or may still be more than 300 plus , This gov is blood drunk , you can trust them with human lives.

    • thusspokez

Of course, the Air force would want to hide the true figures but isn’t it for the Nigerian media to go and find instead of depending on the government for news of the accident?

  • Otile

I am surprised the government is not disputing the casualty figures. Buratai should not be expressing solidarity with the pilot until all the relevant facts are laid out.

  • thusspokez

    236 people buried…

(…and still counting) It has taken the Nigerian media this long to reach this count when media outside Nigeria, 5 days go, were reporting as many as this figure dead.

  • Mentus

What I find hard to understand is the need to bury these murdered people as soon they are killed whatever their religiuos persuasion is.
PT reported those killed were mainly Muslims, how did they arrive at that conclusion or is this a way of pre-emptying any questions about why the relatives of these people were not allowed to even try to identify them. Because they IDP does not mean they have no relatives.
Not all IDPs are Muslims, in fact I guess most of them are not Muslims as BH choose to target Christian villages more.
This practice of kill and bury en mass is so undignified and prevents relative to see and and pay their last rites. It gives the impression the individuals are worth less than animals. It is so sad barbaric. Even the headline does not help.
This must be sadest period in Nigerian history, I have never heard or read of so many mass burials as I have read in the last 18mths.

  • AFRICANER

Deliberate Muslim crime against Christians and Humanity, that must be thoroughly accounted for by Hausa-Fulani Criminals!

    Editor Premium Times,

    Public Letter to Premium Times,

    I am an avid reader
of your online newspaper. I consider it in the ranks of the best in the
world. But, two things. Please rely less on official bulletin in casting some
of your headlines. It’s risky. When this bombing incident occurred you’d misled
readers that just about two people died. But that was because you’d relied on
official statement. You really should not have so relied. A bomb dropped by a
military plane on a camp full of women and kids (camped as internally displaced
refugees) couldn’t have been so kind to kill only two persons. You now report
more accurately though that over 230 innocent Nigerians were mindlessly killed
    by Nigeria’s Air force.

    • Senator D

Even an IED will kill more than two people if the number of people are in a kill zone of radius 10-metres NOT to talk of an IDP camp that has a kill zone of radius <5metres…. Why do you think BH targets IDPs? It's because of the low kill zone radius. Same for Markets!

  • Netanyahu

When the WICKED is in power, the people suffer. Is anybody taking count of the number of people killed under this evil administration in less than two years? It is mind blowing. We are talking of thousands of innocent Nigerians brutally murdered by agents of this satanic buhari in this very short period of his draconian rule. Where is Sonola Olumense, a journalist historian? We need to document all atrocities by buhari and his agents for posterity. This man has spilled so much blood and doesn’t seem to be satisfied yet. This country is in serious trouble, particularly non awusa/foolani. His bigotry is the worst by any leader in black Africa.

Death of Nigerians is NOTHING to Buhari as long as they are NOT Fulani Herdsmen!

Do you see the alacrity the Nigerian Police approached the issue of suspected attacks on Herdsmen in Delta State? How I wish same alacrity was be used in the massacre of those Gbagyi and indigenous people in Southern Kaduna…

  • LionHeart

General Burantashi and co, the blood of the 236 innocent souls are in your hands.

Death of Nigerians is NOTHING to Buhari as long as they are NOT Fulani Herdsmen. Imagine whilst Nigerians were crying that tens of souls where lost in the failed genocide the Miyyetti Allah were cattle their loses of cow…

Do you see the alacrity the Nigerian Police approached the issue of suspected attacks on Herdsmen in Delta State recently? How I wish same alacrity was used during the massacre of those Gbagyi and indigenous people in Southern Kaduna…

  • Ohnigeria Godsavenigeria

This bubus government is going down as the most fraudulent, most deceitful, most deluded, most lying, most clueless, most murderous, most clannish, most tribal /ethnic bigoted and most hypocritical government ever seen in Nigeria.
This is the worst thing that can ever happen to any nation. Having men whose souls are perverse and depraved at the helm of affairs, men who govern with the instrument of lies, deception, falsehoods, hate and wickedness.
May God never allow this nation to ever fall into the evil grip of liars and hypocrites again. Buhari is an evil plaque and a debilitating evil affliction upon Nigeria. May God deliver our nation from this epidemic called change.
May God deliver our nation and give us the grace to change this fraud in 2019 polls.

It was unfortunate it happened. In a country where animals rule humans, things don’t work. Great unfortunate things happen at all times. Too bad
