UPDATE: 52 dead, 120 injured after Nigerian jet accidentally bombed IDP camp

The MSF, otherwise known as Doctors Without Borders, has said that at least 52 people were killed after a Nigerian fighter jet accidentally dropped a bomb on an internally displaced persons, IDP, camp.

The international organisation, whose officials were present at the Rann camp in Borno State when the incident occurred, said another 120 people were injured from the incident.

The MSF stated these in a statement issued to the media in Borno State.

The Nigerian military, which has owned up to the attack, is yet to provide its casualty figures.

The Borno State government has also said it is waiting for the military to furnish it with full details of what actually transpired in Rann, headquarters of Kala-Balge Local Government Area.

The casualty provided by the MSF puts the death as one of the highest in the state in recent times from a single incident.

The MSF said it is currently providing first aid to the 120 injured persons in Rann.

Jean-Clément Cabrol, MSF’s Director of Operations, said, “This large-scale attack on vulnerable people who have already fled from extreme violence is shocking and unacceptable.”

“The safety of civilians must be respected. We are urgently calling on all parties to ensure Bomb victimsthe facilitation of medical evacuations by air or road for survivors who are in need of emergency care.”

MSF first started working in Nigeria in 1971, and is one of the few organisations still able to operate in hard-to-reach areas of the country.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported the bombing of the camp earlier on Tuesday.

The Theatre Commander of Nigerian forces in Borno, Lucky Irabor, a major general, confirmed that he authorised the bombing.

“This morning today, we received reports about gathering of Boko Haram terrorists somewhere in Kala Balge Local Government area of Borno State. We got a coordinate and I directed that the air should go to address the problem.

“Unfortunately the strike was conducted but it turned out that the locals somewhere in Rann were affected.

“We are yet to get the details of the casualties. But we have some civilians that have been killed, others are wounded and we also have two of our soldiers that were also wounded. Among some that are wounded are local staffs of the Medicine Sans Frontiers as well as ICRC,” he said.

The way people are dying in the north is like a curse has been put on that region . This bokohram war has turn into a fiasco, yesterday it was sheakus flag today it’s innocent people been confused for bokohram, trust me Buhari will not visit that place to see for him self , rather he is too busy in the other room………….

      • emmanuel

Buhari nor fit deliver for that inner room. If Aisha give am good *low job he go faint. Nor mind the Baba dey talk inner room for there.
Even if he smoke hashish or robber, him heart go cease like Abacha own.

its a shame! The Nigerian nation is gradually dying!

  • Gabriel Olasebikan

This is targeted at Oby Ezekwesili and co.

    • Akiika

How did you know that Gebu?

    • Kekedu

Abeg grow up… there are 52 dead!

  • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

I hope the lessons are learnt here.

Who gave the coordinates? Were there visual confirmations before ordinance was released?

Was there an attempt to confirm the targets were hostile before the orders for strike were given?

We cannot afford to have such a lackadaisical approach to taking human lives, combatants or not.

    • Alao

You are dealing with a bunch of ignorant fools who careless and would gloss over it. Nigerians lives do not matter to these guys. Trigger happy

      • AryLoyds

I think they is a sinister plan to kill all the minorities in the core northern states , you can tell me that you can miss your coordinates in your own country, it’s like wanting to go to Lagos and taking the wrong bus to Ibadan , and start blaming your sat nav …….how are we sure it’s only hundred casualties???

    • emmanuel

Let give them time to study the mess before you ask this question. Your APC only understand precision in rumour mongering, propaganda and all manner of deceit. They fail on all fronts, in the attempts to give good impression of themselves.
I beg scream say GEJ must be taken to the hague for this genocide – charge and bail lawyer. I told you early in 2015 that with BUhari in Government, you may not have enough money to buy data for your internet visits. Did my prophecy not come to pass? How you take buy data this time?

      • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

LOL…. Me they (network providers) keep stealing my data and credit in this harsh times.

    • Höly Wähala

It’s not about the coordinates @Kay, nothing like precision strikes in military ops that go 100% pin-point, it’s quite likely that Boko Haram elements were spotted around the IDP Camp which prompted military response. Methinks however, that the strategy of using airstrikes in an areas with high civilian concentration was flawed, inexperienced and sourly in-coordinate even by military rules of engagement. That officer should be relieved of his duties for this blunder. Ende!

      • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

I agree fully with your sentiments here, Bruv.

      • AryLoyds

If federal government say only 50 dead , then we expect close to 100 just as other news websites are reporting. Human life is worthless in Nigeria . May God punish all the sponsors of this sect and those using the sect to destabilise the country.

  • Abdulkadir

This kind of incidents happen now and then, but it must be stressed that it is always unfortunate.

President Jonathan went dancing in Kano when Nyanya was bombed, he also knew who was not involved minutes after Abuja was bombed on october 1 2010 by his kinsmen in an episode we later got to know was carried out with his knowledge but he made a request that it should be blamed on the north as revealed by the major actor Henry Okah now serving prison time in south Africa for arms trafficking and terrorism, why did Henry’s call log reveal so many verbal communication with president Jonathan?

          • emmanuel

Why did i call you mumu if you are not one? Henry and co were arm dealers who worked for different interest. W e know how Henry sang fake songs just to damage Jonathan because he refused to put him in his pay roll.
Who sold arms to Henry from Nigeria Army depots in Kaduna, na Jonathan? paaer brain.
You screamed to high heavens asking why Jonathan did not go to bomb scene as a President. Now tell me how many has Bokohari visited since he assumed office?

The wicked have done their worst. Just when a probe of the 250 million
Naira pocketed by Secretary to the federal government, Mr. Babachir, is
to start, this plane bomb. Babachir said he used 250 million Naira to buy
cutlass to cut grass at this IDP camp. Nigerians screamed. But now that the
airforce has gone to bomb and erase any evidence, Mr. Babachir can be
      much grateful.

    • Freedomfighter

My brother, i just hope so too. Although the army has tried in the fight against BH but this error is just to unprofessional but they should try and ensure that they sincerely and whole-heartedly apologise and compensate the families of the victims

  • My People

    Dear Editor,

Please I am not interested in Nigeria. I only want to discuss GAMBIA.
There is nothing about Nigeria that makes any sense to me and my family.
We have not had electricity since December 24th 2016, which was Christmas Eve,
Is Nigeria a country again? Nigeria is not a country, please! It is a forest of wild animals.

I can’t discuss forest of wild animals, now that Nigeria Air Force is bombing Nigerian refugees.
Premium Times can never force me to do what I don’t want to discuss here from my own mind.
Please help us put YAHYA JAMMEH as front page because he’s talking sense about sovereignty.
If only two people die from Air Force bomb in Nigeria, as you first reported one hour ago, jeje
If the two dead have now become 52 dead from Air Force bombing of Nigerians after one hour, jeje.

    • R.Ess. Kay

WAS ABU QAQA THE PILOT OF THE AIR FORCE FIGHTER JET THAT BOMBED NIGERIANS?

PLEASE DON’T BE SHY TO CLARIFY THE IDENTITY OF THE PILOT, EVEN IF IT WAS SHEKAU.

WE WANT TO KNOW WHO KILLED MORE NIGERIANS THAN BOKO HARAM WAS ABLE TO DO.

    • thusspokez

As your comment is irrelevant to the news report on this forum, it should be deleted by the premiumtimesng moderator. Every serious online newspaper forum has moderators, sadly not on Nigerian websites.

      • My People

        @thusspokez:disqus ,

What is irrelevant there? Mention one thing I said that is not relevant to the madness of Air Force
having radar and radio communication flying inside Nigeria and flying to where refugees from past
Boko Haram are in refugee camps and the Nigerian pilot bombed that refugee camp of Nigerians?
Is that a normal country? No! That is a mad country. I am saying it. Nigeria is a very mad country.
I can just imagine Shehu Abubakar of Boko Haram laughing and laughing at President Buhari.

        • CCTV

Okay, guys, cool down. No sane Air Force pilot should bomb a refugee camp
of recent victims of Boko Haram attacks. That’s death most cruel to be condemned.
The only position a patriot could take on current facts is to demand court-martial of the pilot.
If convicted by the court-martial for military incompetence, the pilot should face firing squad.

          • Otile

What if the pilot believe in the cause, I mean jihad? Already a big reward awaits him in paradise, if you hang him for this bombing greater reward awaits awaits him too. Either way the pilot has nothing to lose.

          • tony

I AGREED WITH YOU. THE SAID BOMBER OF THE INNOCENT REFUGEES AND OTHER CREW MEMBERS MUST BE SERIOUSLY INTEROGATED TO ENSURE THAT THEY DID NOT PURSUE THEIR SENSELESS REWARD AND WASHED BRAIN AGENDA. ARE YOU SURE THE BOMBER OR ONE OF THE CREWS IS NOT A SHEKAU FAITHFUL?

          • Fili.Okun

            @Otile:

Anything is possible, my brother. Anything is possible. Nigeria is a ridicule. This is not mistake!

You suggest it may be part of Islamist Jihad. It is possible. Either way it is mass murder, no doubt.

          • Otile

What if the pilot is an ardent believer in jihad? Already a big
reward awaits him in paradise, if you hang him for this bombing greater
reward awaits awaits him too. Either way the pilot has nothing to lose.

“During an operation aimed at clearing the area of Boko Haram insurgents,
a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet mistakenly bombed a refugee camp in Borno
State on Tuesday, killing no fewer than 100 civilians. The Associated Press
(AP) reports that a Borno State official confirmed that over 100 refugees and
humanitarian aid workers were killed. According to an International Committee
of the Red Cross (ICRC) worker, 20 ICRC aid workers died.”

These mistakes happen as judged from other ongoing wars conducted by countries with vastly superior ISR capabilities. My condolences goes out to the families of those who were killed or maimed by the accidental bombing of the internally displaced camp.

  • Gary

May the innocent souls Rest In Peace. This is a sad reality of life in an active war zone where collateral damage happens. There’s a need to establish better coordinates with the air force about the location of refugee camps or moving them away from the the theatre of operations.

Since being dislodged from their Sambisa Forest refuge, is it advisable for the air force to remain engaged in dropping ordinance on suspected Boko Haram camps? What if such camps held civilian hostages like the Chibok Girls?
Close air-suppport aircraft like helicopter gunships should be in use now rather than high level bombers that cannot discriminate in identifying the nature of the enemy they are attacking. The terrorists are no longer holding territory and returning to guerilla warfare instead of pitched battles with the Nigerian military. The tactics and weapons deployed against them must also change.

    • Factsay

Imagine if this had happened under GEJ govt

      • Gary

Lai, Buhari, Sultan and Murtala Nyacko would have called for global sanctions against Nigerian military and ICC war crimes trial for GEJ because he authorized the attack on the IDP camp due to his hatred of Moslems and to cover up massive corruption in feeding the refugees.

Then the rest of the media and E-rats would take the propaganda attack from there and abuse GEJ, his wife, the Niger-Deltans, NOI, the Igbo and all their ancestors for conspiracy to kill innocent Northerners.

This tragic incident should remind us all of the folly of playing politics with war and the lives of innocent Nigerians. Those who did as the opposition have now inherited the same military and fighting the same war in the same circumstances.

That’s the moral to this tragedy.

  • Ohnigeria Godsavenigeria

This is the worst thing that ever happened to Nigeria as far as governance is concerned. Nigerian citizens are now being slaughtered left, right and centre with careless abandoned. While kidnappers and ritualists are on one side, armed Fulani herdsmen are on the other side, then the military are on the other end.
By 2019 ,I hope that Nigeria will have enough citizens to try changing this change through the ballot. This is the worst government that any nation shall ever dream to have.
But patriotic citizens warned Nigerians about the danger posed by this yeye change, but the Judas Iscariot race was turbo charged to deliver their landmark Judas Iscariot kiss.
What a sad testament for Nigeria.
May God come to the rescue of Nigeria before it is too late.

    • Omoba1

Crocodile tear! A marksman is unlike to kill a bystander and claim “unintended consequences”, because he has been well trained. Also, your doctor is unlikely to prescribe you the wrong medicine which kills you and then claim “unintended consequences”, because he has been well trained, there!

  • Papa Ogihwriodo

    MY CHILDREN,

This thing that happened is like a criminal something. It cannot be mistake, because let us say Ecowas wants to
drive President Jammeh out of office in Gambia. If we send this same Air Force Pilot to go and bomb the army
of President Jammeh in the military barracks, does it mean this Pilot can fly to Senegal, instead of Gambia,
and go and bomb the presidential house of the president of Senegal? Is that what you mean by mistake?
You must not use that word again. There is no mistake in this one. This is something that can cause
a big war if the Pilot says he made mistake, that instead of going to Gambia he went to bomb the
house of the president of Ghana in Accra. If you want to say mistake, it means you are telling
the Pilot to do it again, since nobody is above mistake. Not so? That is very dangerous.

  • Wali Ahmed

I can hardly now doubt that Nigerian Army/ Government of today is not the Boko Haram of yester years.

    The style has been consistent.

Kill them in their houses. If they survive, gather them in IDP Camps, promise them feeding and stave off donor agencies. Then turn around and embezzle the money which you told the world has been give to them. Starve them of food and medicine. If International Organizations dare to ignore your deceits and adamantly visit the IDPs with succor, bomb the hell out of all of them.

No IDP must survive. The genocide must be complete. After all, they did not vote Buhari in 2011 elections and they are bloody infidel communities. This is not a mistake, it looks like the plan from minute one.

For me, Nigerian Government / Army has gone rogue!

    This is sad.

It’s most unfornute that human lives count lesser than that of Animals in this country. How can innocent civilians be targeted and tagged error. Same Jet that could not bomb boko Haram members in full glare now targets civilians. Where is the so called military intelligent gathering? In sane countries, chief of air staff would have resigned by now. What a mess called a country.

    • okenwa

Chief of air staff abi president. This one pass what makes david cameron of uk to comot office.

  • emmanuel

The Pilot is a bastard. aLL Fighter Jet Pilots knows the location of protected people. The read and review maps of battle fronts almost on daily basis.
No Pilot takes off without reading maps in company of his commander. There could not have been missing out an IDP camp in their theatre of operation maps.
APC is the most despicable Political Party in Africa, Next to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Full of block heads, old and dying breeds of corrupt politicians and new kids on the thieving blocks, Boko Haram sponsors and financiers and Military informants of Boko Haram.

    • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Its not the pilots faults. He was given coordinates to bomb, he cant tell who’s who on the ground from the air. Its the fault of the Army Special forces and AIS (Air-force intelligence services) commands who lazed the wrong targets for fast mover strikes.

      • emmanuel

Heads should roll. If the pilot circled the camp a few times befor edropping bombs and he did not get a counter fire, he saw women and chidren, then something is so so wrong.
These jets are fitted with special visors/cameras.
There is an in-house mole that must be uprooted, except if such mole have a backing from higher powers.

        • VERITAS_ the rock of ages_

Indeed. But in this Nigeria of today they are sure to shift the blame and nothing will happen in the end of the blame games. we have to wait until people like me become president. We will probe such atrocities at that time and prosecute those incompetent culprits. Not these Biafra war participant generation. They are utterly utterly backward and useless

  • Powerlessconscious

    This is the greatest loss

  • Gary

The victims and their loved ones deserve an open and honest enquiry into what and who caused this tragic incident and clearly avoidable loss of lives.
I’m not given to conspiracy theories but the never-ending ordeal of these people bears cause for concern. They have had their lives uprooted and barely survived the mindless carnage visited upon them by these Sunni Jihadists going into five years now. Then with no future in sight, herded like sheep into refugee camps to starve, beg and even raped for food, while monies donated are diverted to cutting grass.
Amid these suffering and even suicide-bomber infiltration, comes the Nigerian Airforce bombing them into oblivion. Just how much can these people take? And for how long? When will their suffering end or are we just going to watch them die, human beings and our fellow citizens?

  • Otile

The Fulani officers in the army almost beheaded General Kuti for a little mistake, but they are letting this Boko Haram pilot off the hook because he bombed ‘infidels’. Na wa for Buhari and Buratai.
