Nigerian judge, charged with fraud, seeks accelerated hearing

Federal High Court Headquarters

A Federal High Court judge, Adeniyi Ademola, accused of corruption, has asked for an accelerated hearing into his ongoing trial earlier scheduled to continue January 18.

Mr. Ademola and his wife Olubowale, who was retired as Lagos State Head of Service for her role in the scandal, were arraigned on an 11-count charge on December 13.

The duo were accused of committing acts of criminal conspiracy to receive gratification contrary to section 26 (1) (C) of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, and punishable under the same section.

According to the first count of the charge, they allegedly conspired to collect gratification from a company, Joe Agi and associates, belonging to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joe Agi, to the tune of N30 million, in March 2015.

They were brought before justice Jude Okeke of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

Mr. Ademola approached the court on Monday with a fresh application for an accelerated hearing.

The counsel the Federal Government, Segun Jegede, however informed the court of his client’s resolve to amend the charge to include Mr. Agi.

He prayed the court for time to allow his client amend the charge.

Mr. Jegede said the amended charge should be ready by Tuesday at the latest.

Consequently, the judge, Jude Okeke, adjourned the matter till January 11 for presentation of the amended charge.

The judge added that the case would be slated for daily hearing, after Mr. Agi has been arraigned, from January 16 to 18.

Editor’s Note: Paragraph 2 of the story was edited to reflect the fact that Justice Ademola’s wife, Olubowale, had been retired by the Lagos government.

Mr. Ademola, beware of overconfidence. I advise this because I think the judge is either innocent or he believes he can wriggle himself out relying on his experience as a judge.

This is unusual in a country where corruptly rich-people and politically exposed persons collude with rogue lawyers and crooked judges to prolong their criminal cases for more than10 years; or until the case files become missing. It’s a bold move on the part of Justice Adeniyi Ademola…..even if he is found guilty of those charges at the end of the day.

    My Children,

I really don’t know whether to say happy new year to all of you because the way things are going with this Buhari government it may not be a happy new year at all. My neighbour wife just told me that kerosene is now 350 for litre.
So how can that be a happy new year, if her husband has not got salary for six months now, and, there is no electricity since December 27, 2016 in my house here? I don’t see anything in your future again. The money you think you have
in your pocket is becoming like toilet roll everyday. The Naira is now 480 to one dollar. By next week now it can fall to
500 Naira to one dollar. So, where is your future?

You can see why I am very careful not to wish you happy new year because I can’t tell lies in my old age. No money,
no jobs, no safety, no water, no light, no safety, no hope. This Buhari government is just too bad. Even now, see it.
the Judges inside the court that should be honest are now begging for money from the people coming to the court.
Is that a court of law again, when a Judge is saying thank you sir to an accused criminal for giving him bribe?
I think, maybe, this Buhari government has already destroyed all your future. I don’t know, but I am hearing
that petrol price will become 200 Naira by end of this month. That means you all have to start trekking,
since transport cost will go up too.

“A corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit. For out of the heart
proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false
witness, and, blasphemies. The love of money is the root of all evil; which,
while some coveted after, they erred from faith and pierced themselves with
sorrows. For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and
lose his own soul? The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity
tossed to and fro of those who seek death. There are thorns and snares on the
      path of the crooked.”

Mr. Ademola as a judge, granted Nnamdi Kanu bail when the f00l was first charged to court, after which he (kanu) was re-arrested at the prison’s gate.
That was the beginning of Justice Ademola undoing.

Ademola is a very gutsy bast**ard. It is only in Nigeria that someone who is caught red-handed will have the derring-do to mount a defence. Just before Christmas last year, an Egyptian Judge who was accused of mild corruption, committed suicide. Many of us Nigerians are just hardened criminals. Members of the Bench who are found guilty of corruption on the scale of Ademola’s, should be made to face firing squads. Where is thief Ademola’s sense of decency? What a country!
