The Senate on Tuesday voted to reject President Muhammadu Buhari’s list of 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees, asking for “re-submission and rejigging”.

The lawmakers’ resolution to return the list to the president followed the move by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, who said numerous petitions had trailed the nominations..

Mr. Ndume ‘s motion to return the list was seconded by the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio of Peoples Democratic Party.

Mr. Buhari had on October 20 written the Senate, seeking confirmation of 46 persons, including Olorunmimbe Mamora and Usman Bugaje, as Nigeria’s envoys. Apparently, the nominations were made without consultation with governors who later met with the president, demanding they be carried along regarding appointments given to persons from their respective states.

Two nominees, Paullen Tallen and Usman Bugaje, had rejected their nominations.

However, the Senate had earlier during the Tuesday plenary confirmed the 47 career ambassadorial nominees whose list was initially forwarded to the Senate in June.

Mr. Buhari sent the list of the career diplomats in June. That one also elicited complaints over charges deputy directors were appointed over directors in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that states like Bayelsa were not considered in the list.

But the Senate confirmed all 47 nominees nonetheless on Tuesday.

During their screening before Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs chaired by Monsurat Sunmonu (APC-Oyo) in July, two of the 47 career ambassadorial nominees – Vivian Okeke and Ibarhim Isah – failed to recite the country’s anthem and pledge, leaving lawmakers and journalists at the senate hearing in laughter.

Ms. Okeke and Mr. Isah have been in Nigeria’s foreign service since 1983 – already raking in 33 years of experience each. Despite their failure to recite the national anthem and pledge – two recitals taught in primary schools across the county and sung through primary and secondary school years – the two longstanding diplomats were also confirmed.

Mr. Akpabio said all the nominees were qualified but questioned the patriotism of the two.

Senate President Saraki defended the nominees saying it was fright and anxiety that prevented them from completing the national anthem and pledge. He quoted Gbenga Ashafa (APC-Lagos) and James Manager (PDP-Delta) whom he said were at the dramatic screening.

Career and non-career ambassadorial lists??? What a way of squandering the wealth of the nation…
Why not go on only the career ambassadorial list? What a country???

And Trump is a career politician!

Buhari has been warned….the governors do not consult the FG when they want to appoint commissioners..not sure why they feel they should be consulted in this matter…and if Buhari yields to their demands it will never stop…tomorrow they will demand human head sacrifice from Buhari before he can use the toilet…

Rather,Buhari has to be guided because he is leading Nigeria to the abyss with many disastrous steps he has taken.

The tendency to act alone must be checked.

      • dami

The Governors are overreaching…Buhari does not have to consult with them before nominating anyone for any position…

I concur….should have read your post before posting mine. I frankly do not know these governors think they are?. When Buhari is busy fighting the criminal gang at the federal level, I have not heard a single governor doing the same in their respective states or LGCs. Governors are a hot bed for corruption in Nigeria, can you imagine if they all get to work instead of flying around the globe with state funds?.

I think it’s very wrong for you to appoint someone and refuse to inform the person ahead. It’s wrong for someone to hear about his or her appointment 1st in the news.

These senators are becoming a huge problem for this country. They are beginning to behave like US Republican lawmakers always throwing a spanner into the works. They didn’t consider that Nigeria has not had diplomatic representation abroad in over a year and that diplomatic outcomes from Buhari’s strategic alliances are about to be lost. Money recovered in US, Europe and UAE are lying in abeyance because there are no ministers to conclude the negotiations. Now they are rejecting a bulk number of 46 nominees because the governors said they were not consulted before the nominations. Mind you this are appointments that are within the purview of the president. This is supposed to be a country in a hurry but the body language of the judiciary doesn’t show it. Are all these actions deliberate or mistakes or is there more than the blinking eye can see?

What significant does our National Anthem has in the life of Nigerian diplomat. Ask people over 55 years of age they do not care to know it, because Nigeria we Hail thee still rings in their hearts.
This shoddy show of the Senators are just the beginning of APC downfall, the ruling party members lack discipline and by the way when the Federal government gave the 27 state governors money to pay salaries do they consult with the President about how and when the money will be used and up todate many of them have still not pay salaries for 7 months. There should be respect for the office of the President.

We should have a different mechanism for vetting such candidates not the governors. Governors should mind their business of appointing commissioners in their respective States. I honestly believe we give our governors too much relevance and based on their conduct so far, they do not deserve such powers when our States are falling apart under their watch. A rethink of our constitution with regards to the governors in Nigeria is badly required.

How can somebody in his right senses hire retired supreme court justices as ambassadors? very old men who have lived their lives to the fullest and ripe old age and climbed to the highest point in their careers? when we have so many young men and women who are also career diplomats or non-career diplomats that are available for selection? and somebody out of sentiments calls this “CHANGE”, this is just plain old POLITICS, rewarding of party faithful’s and affiliates and even worse, most of them were selected for Buhari and are probably mostly CPC. Buhari is not serious, neither is he sincere, he is a joker. How can you employ someone who read french as an agric minister and depend on such people to lead the diversification into agriculture revolution? is it any wonder such a person wants to import grass as a solution to grazing? i am not interested in excuses and blame game, Buhari should provide solutions to our problems and stop giving us more problems. I wish for Buhari to succeed and indeed he is trying in some areas but in many areas he is failing, especially the economy and niger delta, instead of applying psychology in solution based thinking and the wsisdom of God, he engages in human wisdom and cunning, biaise, vendetta, agenda, insicerity, deceit and at the end of it all, his home is not dsettled cus his wife is not happy, his party is not settled cus Tinubu and coare not happy, his govenrment is not settled cus governors, senators, reps etc are not happy, nigeria is not settled cus we suffer from failed policies which are impacting on us negatively etc and all people can say is that is that it is good, they are against Buhari, they are against CHANGE, so now people are tying bUharis hand not to bring CHANGE? it is good and brilliant for a man to appoint people he doesnt even know, it is good and brilliant to implement failed policies, our problem still remains poor l;eadership and the greed of the political elite, Buhari has failed in solving those two problems and he is trying to deceive us that our problem is JOnathan and PDP, i supposed it was Jonathan and PDP that devalued the naira and brought forex corruptuion whwre a few elites make double while manufacturing, masses suffer, when same scenario is what we saw in 1984, it was also the fault of Jonathna and PDP? Yes, jOnthan and PDP mesed up but the truth is that Buhari and his APC govenrment has simply replaced Jonasthan and his PDP s govenrment incompetence with their own.
