Angry youth attack Shi’a members, torch leader’s home in Kaduna

Angry youth in Tudun Wada, Kaduna, on Wednesday morning torched the home of Mukhtar Sahabi, a leader of the Shi’a Islamic sect, along Zango Road.

A resident who was at the scene confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES.

The youth, believed to be residents of the area, attacked some members of the Shiite sect who were living in the house.

“I was wondering what was going on this morning when I saw youth in hundreds setting the house on fire,” said the witness. “Before the security operatives could come all of them had gone.”

Sahabi Mukhtar is the leader of the Shia sect in Kaduna and is popularly called the governor.

The area has been cordoned by security operatives.

“We are standing at distance to see what next is going to happen. But there is peace around the area,” the witness, who preferred to remain anonymous, said.

The attack came a day after a standoff between soldiers and members of the group, outlawed last week by the Kaduna government.

Worshippers had gathered to commemorate historical events associated with the Islamic month of Muharram that are particularly significant in the Shia calendar, UK-based Islamic Human Rights Commission, said earlier Tuesday in a statement.

Later, the gathering was encircled by armed troops.

The standoff ended later in the night after the troops withdrew.

The military activity around the area earlier on Tuesday was reminiscent of the run-up to the massacre last December of hundreds of supporters of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria by the army and the arrest of its leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky.

Mr. Zakzaky remains in government custody.

One resident said Zango community members have always complained about the activities of the Shiite group gathering at Mr. Sahabi’s residence.

“For me I will never support violence but Sahabi’s house here is risky for us. Every evening they gather at his house singing hate songs against the governor and Buhari and even none Shiite people,” said the resident.

This is a sad day in Nigeria, a state governor inciting violence against a minority religious group.

  • Muhammad

This group appears to be increasing in its misfit for good neighborliness .
The earlier the members and leaders reverse the orientation to check the negative perception and accommodation of the followers by the neighbors , the greater the prospect of marketing its identity .

    • wasiu

What is the fault of the group in this. Please Mr Muhammed try to have some sense of Justice.

      • kundri kundi

You need to read their history and follow the activities of Al-Shabab

    • George

If there is any further problem, the government is to be held responsible. How can it be wrong for a people to gather at a place without inflicting on the right of others. Now lawless youth are attacking the group members house, I am waiting to see what will be the reaction of the Government on it. I hope they are not working for the Government.

The aftermath of what is happening will not only affect Muslims but Christians as well so Christians have to react too. Your ideology is that of Boko Haram. You too much like to kill

    • irewolede

I guess Ismaeel Saleh knows everything about this Shia group. You can at least enlighten us so that we know what crime they’ve committed to warrant all this treatment they are receiving from El-Rufai and the Federal Government of Nigeria. Could you please do that?

This is reminiscent of what happened to the Jews when Hitler’s Nazis gained power in Germany. First they demonized the Jews for being “others” and not of the Aryan race.
Then they instigated riots and public attacks on the Jews, their businesses and homes.
Then under the cover of war, the round up of the Jews began and the German people were told that they were being taken into camps for their own safety. Only a few in the Nazi hierarchy knew the fate that awaited the Jews at the camps.

By the time the war ended, six million Jews rounded up across Nazi-occupied Europe had been gassed, shot or roasted to death.

In 2016 Nigeria, under a supposedly democratic government, we are watching the state-sponsored genocide of a religious sect in Kaduna State. Yet the rest of the nation does nothing because the Shiites are the “others”.
Just like the German people regarded the Jews.

The ideology of those youth killing Shias are exactly the Ideology of Boko Haram which the State Gov knowingly or unknowingly is promoting. How can the youth in the area killed and set the building ablaze when team of Army, police and civil Defence were in the area since yesterday. It was planned and people from outside kaduna were involved. In one of the facebook account by the name Zaria say No to zakzaky daawa committe one was saying they have arrived kaduna for an assignment that will be beneficial to Ahlal Sunna.
Those provoking the Shias Dont you think if you push them to the wall,if you pushed them to the extreme they will react. Think twice, that is natural.

What would the Kaduna state do if young Shiite Muslims would attack Sunni Islamic gathering? Make no mistake about it, when they finish with Shiite Muslims, they will go after others including Christians. So complacency is not an option if you value your freedom in Nigeria. Think about the statement below:

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.

The Kasuna State govt is fully complicit in this tragedy. They created the atmosphere , infact they encouraged this violence — allowing unemployed , unruly mob to run around destroying private property without consequence.
No matter how repugnant there message may be , the shites deserve equal protection under the law.
