Tinubu’s wife slams 2016 budget, says women used, dumped

President Muhammadu Buhari presenting the 2016 appropriation bill to the National Assembly

A senator representing Lagos Central, Oluremi Tinubu, says the 2016 national budgetary allocation of N4 billion to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is inadequate as it would not cater for the welfare of women who supported the ruling party.

Mrs. Tinubu, the wife of a leader of the ruling APC, made this known during the debate on the general principles of the 2016 budget proposal at a senate plenary in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to her, the allocation will not be adequate to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the Nigerian women, who are looking up to the APC-led government for succour in line with its 2015 campaign promises.

“This budget is less than N4 billion and the capital is almost N3 billion.

“When you look at it what is left to do any work. I am laying this case on behalf of the Nigerian women that this is not going to go well. It is as if we have been used during the campaign.

“We say this is the government of change, that our change mantra is supposed to change things across board, but what they allotted to the Nigerian women is not encouraging.

“When we talk about change that doesn’t mean we are going to just be supporting what is not working.

“So the women are not just going to be used to campaign and several promises are made to them. This budget is not telling anything and not making any promises.

The senator argued that the N1 billion ear-marked for recurrent expenditure would hardly cater for the empowerment programmes under the ministry.

“When we look at the functions of this ministry, we see that the ministry is divided into two, human resources and capacity building, economic services and women cooperatives.

“But when we look at the first division, which is the human resources and capacity building, they are supposed to promote education, development of women in the civil, political, socio-cultural, and economic sectors.

“Also to promote motherhood women’s health especially maternal mortality; and not only that, they are supposed to fund six zonal political empowerment offices.

“Subventions and grants to NGOs, Nigerian women trust fund, management of shelter for female victims of violence, 100 women lobby groups, welfare support for indigent women,” she said.

She called on the Senate Committee on Appropriation to increase the allocation considerably to enable the ministry to meet its obligations to Nigerian women.

A Fraud remain a fraud which ever way they hide. This budget is a big SCAM that will only benefit those that sponsored Buhari’s campaign. ‪#‎FakeChange‬

    • Buhari4Ever

Deri Orbuka, if there is one thing Buhari has achieved so far, it is the fact that his emergence as the president has been giving you sleepness nights and made you a mad man

  • clairvoyance

Are you looking for money to share or what, the women are already taken care of in other social welfare package of this government what more do you want?

    • adeade

My friend I was about saying Same.. The woman sounded as if the money was to be shared..she is talking out of frustration…

  • Adeolu

All Nigerians welfare is paramount. A good governance that creates conducive environment that will give rooms for employment creation, improve social amenities and opportunity for fulfillment of individual aspirations will take care of men and women of this country. Sentiment should be buried in national development.

  • Spoken word

Lol.Bola Tinubu has been schemed out of APC and he is using his wife to attack back.Attack of a wimp.

    • f.d.x escalope

Mrs. Remi Tinubu does not have the formal education to compel my attention.

It is only in Nigeria that better-educated graduates follow sewing mistresses.

Enlightened public opinion is what’s compelling, not just any spurt or gripe.

It doesn’t matter if she’s acting as echo board for her husband as look-alike.

      • Spoken word

the less spoken about Tinubu the better. They have become irrelevant politically.

  • marig

How much did her husband budget for women when he was governor of lagos state?

    • Dunmi Macaulay

There is 800 billion Naira still missing and taken off the balance sheet of Lagos state
by Raji Fashola – part of which is proved to have been passed under the table at night
to Bola Tinubu; including the 28 billion Naira in cash that Raji Fashola handed over to
Bola Tinubu as ‘buy back’ of a fraudulent concession that the same Raji Fashola gave
to Bola Tinubu’s companies on the Lekki Expressway. But Bola Tinubu’s wife does not
say a word on that humongous theft. She diverts attention to women welfare. Were the
800billion Naira missing in Lagos state not shared and pocketed, Lagos women will be
better off today by as much as 800 billion Naira. But sad for Nigeria that the President –
Muhammadu Buhari – grants immunity to all proved thefts under Fashola and Tinubu.

How does PT determine its lead stories?
Every country is going into INNOVATION, TECHNOLOGY, RESEARCH & MANUFACTURING on industrial scales. As oil prices nose dive, countries run by educated, sharp and smart presidents have swung into action invading other countries and setting up factories here and there.

    1. China is setting up Factories everyday in Nigeria.
    2. Korea has just concluded plans to set up a car Assembly plant in Nigeria (Calabar)
    3. France, UK and BMW’s Germany have already done so, setting up mere Assembly plants in Nigeria.

BUT when Ms Laggard of IMF came to see Dunce she told him to focus on TAXATION. That he should tax Nigerians more and more. She did not mention anything about building industries and embarking on scientific and technological research and innovations. Why? Because if Nigeria can en-thrust leadership onto a man who could not pass his high school education despite the array of brilliant and sharp Nigerians, then any kind of advice would be sufficient .

And here we are with the news media focusing on trivialities when they should be asking concrete economic decisions and putting the gov t to task. Rather than put the govt on its toes, media houses like PT with strange poverty of ideas have become perpetual irritants with their beer parlor news headlines. As far back as the 17th century the Europeans had started building ships with which they introduced kidnapping and smuggling to Africans. By 1908, 1909 and 1911 bigger ships like Tatanic were built. They could carry more than 4,000 passengers on a trip across the oceans of the world. 100 yrs after, Nigeria is waiting for US to gift a ship to her and even after the US gifted 24 armored cars to Nigeria, she cannot think smart to put 23 to use and send the 24th vehicle to a research workshop, dismantle it and learn of how it was made.

…and Remi’s worry is that the budget favours men more than women. That is her level of intelligence. But Editors of PT, of what economic importance is this story? Where are thy brains?

    • Buhari4Ever

Deri Orbuka, the story must have been economically important to you. Otherwise, you will not leave a myriad of useless irrelevant comments using different monikers

  • C3kwe

The beginning of cracks in Apc. Without a go ahead of her husband the jagaban Tinubu, his wife would not had made this inflammatory comments. The jagaban has realised that he has been thrown under the bus by the Northern mafians.

    • Maria

There is nothing inflammatory in pointing out errors…only in the minds of f00ls is constructive criticism considered inflammatory.

      • C3kwe

You write bunkum always on this forum, no wonder People don’t join issues with you because you are intellectually bankrupt and have nothing tangible other than insult. So piss off, you Wanker.

      • Darlington

Why can’t she point out the errors privately if there are no cracks in the house of cards called APC? The 2016 Budget is the biggest scam of the century.

        • Maria

Then it becomes a secret affair.

        • PolyGon2013

Why should she? Have forgotten about the independence of the legislators? We have 3 arms of government my friend!

    • PolyGon2013

Tinubu is a senator of Nigeria, and she pointed out something that she believes is wrong? Do you want her to just agree with Buhari on everything?

  • Mama Kay

Remi Tinubu, rant and rave, nobody is listening to you except your husband who asked you to do that.

The bottom line is that we voted for Buhari and he rightly said he belongs to nobody. Let your husband come to terms with the fact that he cannot control PMB.

Let him stay in his Lagos where he lords it over everyone but he should forget Abuja.

By the way, people are happy to be rid of him and his overbearing attitude.

I believe Remi passed her WAEC high school exams, and she should have some sense left in her brain to guide her to the truth that she should be probing the obvious fraud in the figures above and not this gender issues. Except she is saying she is using an Oluwole certificate. A nation’s budget is not Gender specific. Policies are what direct budgetary provisions. Duncee has infected everyone with dull brain and people are just speaking rubbish every now and then.

    • Buhari4Ever

Deri Orbuka, the ultimate dull brain is that opportunist from Otueke who wasted $480Bn Nigerian revenue in 5yrs with nothing to show for it

Madam, stop vibrating. Those of us that contributed for the change, have we got any compensation?
Cant women be change agents without expecting anything in return?
Must you link the ministry to campaign?
Didn’t you get the memo that the nation is broke?
APC as a party too announced they are broke.
You need to keep quiet, this government is not about what you will get, its about what you can do for the love of the country.

  • Shugaba Nkasa

    Madam senator,
This is not the time for complaints. You have been given the opportunity to serve your nation. Instead of doing your best with what you have, you are making press statements threatening the Federal Government of Nigeria that “this will not go well”!!
What exactly are you threatening to do? It is not as if you and your husband are unaware of the condition the current administration found the economy. Yet you both chose to make press statements blasting the Government because the giant budget you were expecting did not materialize.

The way the two of you are carrying on, one would think the Government stole your money or something.

Instead of complaining, you should be thanking your stars. Had your budget been as large as you wanted, temptation and slippery fingers may very well have made you a guest of the EFCC because this President does not joke.

  • FreeNigeria

“Subventions and grants to NGOs, Nigerian women trust fund, management of shelter for female victims of violence, 100 women lobby groups, welfare support for indigent women,” When is it Government function to support these groups? Nigeria, we truly have a long way to go.

  • Omotolaaraujo

Nigeria must live within its means. Women should organize for themselves and promote female business owners. I wonder where her and her friends shop?

  • Say the truth

Sorry Madam we feel your pain. We understand your frustration. It is not only women, even your darling husband was used and dumped. The amount in the budget is so, simply because Sai baba does not believe the woman emancipation thing. To him your place is in the kitchen and maternity wards. It’s a pity you did not noticed that baba was forced to bring out his wife during campaigns, because you were all desperate. As for your husband another goal will be scored against him when Yahaya Bello takes the oath of office in kogi. Your husband’s boy Faleke has been left in the cold by your darling party. Madam, by the way, how come, your husband, with all his much touted political sagacity, didn’t know that baba was just pretending then? The master strategist appeared to have been beaten, to the game at the national level. Well all is not lost you can begin to restrategize and plan for the future. The only problem though, is that the oligarchy understands the game of divide and rule. Fashola, Fayemi and Rotimi Ameachi, have been strategically and deliberately positioned, against your husband to neutralize him, whenever he makes his moves. But we trust your husband and he will not disappoint, after all he survived Obasanjo’s blows. So take heart and have faith, Udo, pele, sorry, pardon.

  • Darlington

This is just the beginning of your frustration. Your husband used every resources at his disposal to incite Yorubas against GEJ. Have you forgotten that GEJ gave women 35% share in government positions, how many did your darling Buhari give to women? This is the frustration of Tinubu’s camp in APC not Nigerian women, because Nigeria women felt better under GEJ. Sorry, endure till 2019.

    • absam777

And your 35% women also shared in the free money with GEJ. There is nothing good about 35% or 100% share of fraudulent and corrupt women.

      • Darlington

Why is she complaining now? Is GEJ still the President?

    • PolyGon2013

And what did the 35% do with the shares to benefit Nigerian?

      • Darlington

        Why is Tinubu complaining now?

        • Julius

It is called Democracy, something that will never happen in biafra !

        • PolyGon2013

It is the beauty of democracy. You can disagree with your own party. Note also that budget presentation is an estimate, and that is why it was sent to NASS to make their own contributions.

      • Julius

        Nothing my brother !

    • Julius

Was Diezani one out of the 35% ?

    • Julius

The same Yorubas that voted massively for him the first time he ran for the presidency .Right ? Who incited them to vote for him then ?

  • Akus Namey

In that same red chamber are two main ruffians, namely Senator Wammako and Senator Dino Melaye,
two non-thinking things, who said this same Budget 2016 is the BEST THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.
If APC does not kill Nigeria first before senatorial tomfoolery, a deliberate promotion of ignorance and
lies by Nigerian journalists will kill Nigerians. Today’s journalism (except for Premium Times) is a tragedy.

    • FreeNigeria

You are so right. so much is wrong with our country and those entrusted to manage it are so confused and don’t know where to start from. or just don’t care about the country because they have properties overseas and their families are not in Nigeria.

Amaechi Looted $757M from Rivers State To Fund Buhari’s Campaign.

The immediate past Rivers State Governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi stole $757 million (N230Billion), reliable sources at the Government House told our reporter in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, south south Nigeria.

Findings from our investigative reports revealed that Rotimi dug deep into Rivers State coffers and doled out a whopping $757 part of which was used to fund Buhari’s campaign and every hue and cry that has been raised so far to have Rotimi Amaechi investigated in spite of the glaring evidence against him tendered by the Rivers State Government has fallen on deaf ears.

”When I met with the news and political editors in Lagos on Sunday, I said, among other things, that the government is aware that in fighting corruption, corruption will also fight back. I also said that those who stole us dry are powerful. They have newspapers, radio and television stations as well as online platforms, and an army of supporters to continuously deride the government’s war against corruption. Well, I can tell you today that corruption is already fighting back, and it is fighting hard and dirty. Sponsored articles have started appearing in the newspapers and on social media, while ‘talking heads’ have started making the rounds in the electronic media, all deriding the fight against corruption as well as this administration. Not stopping there, they have been creating distractions by sponsoring articles in both local and international media to deride the administration’s policies generally, tag the president a budding dictator and even write off his 2016 budget. We know that the sole purpose of these attacks is to distract attention from the war on corruption” By Lai Mohammed

  • K.K. kamson

    Editor Premium Times,

I am told that Bola Tinubu has an unpaid invoice running into billions. The invoice is said to be his claims
for campaign expense reimbursement. To pay the amount claimed by Bola Tinubu it is thought that Buhari
will have to steal a lot of money from the treasury. I am told this is the reason for this crack in the APC,
moreso that Buhari is said to consider the amount claimed by Bola Tinubu as grossly inflated.

I am also told that Bola Tinubu does not agree with Buhari on the choice of the new Kogi governor
that Buhari backs to make it impossible for Faleke (as Bola Tinubu’s protege) to get into office and
give Bola Tinubu a foothold in the north. It is the inability of Bola Tinubu and Muhamadu Buhari to
agree on this Kogi governorship that the Tinubu camp has taken the Buhari camp to court for a
court decision on the Kogi election.

All the sniper fires at Buhari’s budget by Bola Tinubu’s wife (Remi) and all the blasting of Buhari
as a lawless leader by THE NATION newspaper of Bola Tinubu are said to emanate from those
two issues, besides that Bola Tinubu is said to be feeling bad that he’s not treated as an equal
partner with Muhamadu Buhari concerning the APC governmental decision-making process.

    • Customer Satisfaction

    • Julius

I agree. Besides, she is doing what Senators do. Debate and help their constituents ! Isnt this what Democracy is all about ?

  • Rommel

What do reasonable people do when times are hard? they reduce expectations, this is what is going on in civilized world right now, this president is only increasing expenditure so that the country can diversify and move away from dependency on single commodity whose pricing we do not determine, this was the single reason why Mrs Okonjo Iweala was brought back by Goodluck Jonathan,an assignment which no one is asking her today how far she went in achieving it despite having access to more money than all previous administrations in the history of Nigeria, well records show that she failed in her primary assignment and all other she was given, this administration will attempt to do things right,we just need to fix the fundamentals, the planned 60 billion Naira is to help women and entrepreneurs to start something, why are Nigerians behaving as if,they are disconnected from reality?

  • SamPsalm

Well, Mrs Tinubu raised a valid concern but one based on the paradigm of the past when she was First Lady in Lagos State and the flamboyant Stella Obasanjo was First lady of the FG. Women constitute about half and some say more than half of Nigeria’s population. It is therefore self-defeating and insulting on women to want to alienate their welfare to the Ministry of Women Affairs and leave the remaining 24 to MEN alone?

Clearly, the Ministry of Women Affairs was at inception designed as a tokenist statement by political gladiators of the past to settle party women, dancers and hangers-on. Over the years, it has tried to be several things to several stewards depending on the sophistication/nuisance quotient or lack of it of the President’s wife and the incumbent Minister leading to duplication of just about everything – and of course, serving as a convenient conduit for siphoning funds by the President’s spouse. The same scenario plays out at the State level too.

Under Buhari and his change, the thrust is to return women and men to the central pool and streamline. We already see that by the very laid back role being played by the President’s wife and the fact that the Ministry is led by a woman whose heart is really in the Governor’s Office of Taraba State. Remi Tinubu’s outburst simply shows Lagos Central needs a new Senator. This one is still stuck in the paradigm of the past: the way it was when she was First Lady in Lagos State and the flamboyant Stella Obasanjo was First lady of the FG.

But we have moved on: the next step is for women to call for the scrapping altogether of the Ministry and for them to be fully engrafted on the policy of tables of all the Ministries of the nation as they ought to be. Throwing money as this token aberration is in no way a demonstration of love for women

  • MI

Many agencies, department, NGO, cover every aspect of citizens including women. All of the developmental projects and programmes covered in the budgets emcompassses everyone, women affairs can even be a unit in one of the existing ministries to cater for special attention or needs for the disadvantaged, abuses, early marriages, rights and so on. Again, many of the government’s people oriented programmes covers women as well. I think in times as this fund allocation will reflect our challenges. Besides, budgets allocations are based on proposals from the MDAs and funds availability; what was the ministries proposal?

  • Bejim

This PDP sef! Why are they putting words in the mouth of Mrs Tinubu?

  • sab

Bejim, why do you think this way? Has mrs Tinubu denied the statement for you now to begin to play her advocate? Read other media publications and if you are not still convinced she said so, then check the senate twitter handle and get yourself convinced. Let us stop this blame game. Let us call a spade a spade. When and where something is wrong we should be able to look ourselves in the face and say or do the needful. If somebody like mrs Tinubu that all of you hailed when she took on senate president can make such observation means that indeed something is wrong somewhere especially being in same party with PMB.

Not surprising at all. We all knew that APC is also a cesspool of corruption, just like its sire; PDP. It is the promise of ‘phantom’ change and the hypocrisy of it all that makes APC worse than PDP. PMB has good intentions. But he will be pulled down, not so much by corrupt PDP politicians, but by his own APC members! If he fights corrupt APC members, they will pull the rug off his feet. After all he is standing on their shoulders. If he continues to close his eyes to ‘mind boggling’ corruption by APC members, then the whole war on corruption is ‘lost on arrival’.

The losers; Nigerians who voted for change, and as Oluremi Tinubu (Mrs) has realized, there is either no change or very negative change!
