IGP says El-Zakzaky in police custody, needs “orders from above” to allow access to him

The spiritual leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a group propagating the Shi’ite ideology in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is currently in police custody, being guarded as he received treatment at an undisclosed medical facility, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has said.

A clash between members of the sect and the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on December 12 and 13 in Zaria left a yet unknown number of sect members, including the sect’s second-in-command, Muhammad Turi, dead.

The Chief of Army Staff earlier disclosed that the Shi’ite leader and other suspects arrested during the clash were handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution.

He however did not specifically disclose the “relevant authority” detaining Mr. El-Zakzaky, and followers.

PREMIUM TIMES reliably gathered Monday that Mr. Arase disclosed to members of the special committee of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) who met him in his office today that Mr. El-Zakzaky was currently under police custody.

The NSCIA had last week raised a seven-man committee, with Daud Naibi as chairman and Ishaq Oloyede, Muzammil Hanga, Abubakar Tsav, Ibrahim Suleiman, Yusuf Ali, Abubakar Siddique and Is-haq Oloyede as members.

The committee was mandated to meet all parties involved in the clash and report to the council.

During the meeting with Mr. Arase and all the Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police at the force headquarters in Abuja, the NSCIA delegation sought to know the whereabouts of the Shiite leader, a police source at the meeting told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Arase, our source said, admitted that Mr. Elzakzaky was in police custody receiving treatment, but could not yet grant anyone access to him until his health improves.

The police chief reportedly assured the delegation that Mr. El-Zakzaky was doing well and not under any life-threatening condition.

The source, who was present at the meeting, told PREMIUM TIMES that the police boss also said after Mr. El-Zakzaky’s recuperation, he would have to seek “orders from the above” before allowing the NSCIA delegation access to the sect leader.

Mr. Arase reports directly to President Muhammadu Buhari, and at times through the the National Security Adviser.

Apart from seeking to be allowed access to Mr. El-Zakzaky, the NSCIA delegation had requested Mr. Arase to allow the bodies of those killed in the clash to be released to their families for burial.

The delegation also demanded to know the exact number of those killed and injured in the clash and wanted access to the injured.

In his response, the police inspector-general promised he would revert to the NSCIA after seeking permission on the best response to the delegation’s requests.

The Nigerian troops had laid siege on the Shiite enclave on December 12 and 13, arresting Mr. El-Zakzaky, his wife, and an unspecified number of his followers.

The sect’s headquarters as well as its leader’s residence were flattened .

Although the Nigerian government is yet to react to the killings, the Nigerian Army claimed Mr. Buratai narrowly escaped death after the sect members attacked his motorcade and attempted to deny him passage.

The group’s spokesman, who earlier blamed the army for the killings, was also killed hours after releasing the statement.

The killings attracted local and global attention, with Iranian authorities reportedly summoning their ambassador for debriefing.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs also urged the Nigerian government to investigate the Zaria killings.

The Secretary General of the NSCIA, Is-haq Oloyede, last week said the Muslim leaders decided to come together “to express their concern about what is happening in Zaria and call for restraint on the part of all stakeholders in the interest of peace and security of Nigeria”.

Are still doing “order from above”/”oga at the top”? Where are the courts? This is getting crazy, have all our public officers lost their minds?

    • I did It 4 Love.

Nigeria can’t stop order from above or oga at the top because we are timid naturally.

      • Otile

Call a spade a spade, don’t be timid. I know you all are talking about Mohamed Buhari. Oga at the top my foot

    • No Bull …..

This case is too hot for our court system to handle because of the sensitive involved. There is a reason why ‘oga at the top’ was hired by Nigerians anyway.

This is not good at all. The North will bleed for this. This is not good at all.

    • Otile

Well, blood will have blood. Imam is dealing with Shiite Moslems who believe in revenge. They are not like Igbo Christian where he can commit murder and go free. This particular mass murder is going to haunt Buhari and his people from generation to generation. He has provoked the sleeping lion. Wallahi.

      • Ashibogu

        Otile!

    • musa aliyu

      Bleed for what? Lameduck?

Burkina Faso has issued an international arrest warrant for ousted
leader Blaise Compaore for his suspected role in the 1987 killing of
ex-President Sankara, an unnamed judicial source is quoted by AFP
news agency as saying. If Buhari does not go to the Hague when his time is up Compaore’s fate awaits him.

  • GEJ FOREVER

    LADIES & GENTLEMEN

I proudly present to you … the truly clueless and truly incompetent one:

    Muhammadu Buhari (alias Wascless) !

NB: Egypt did not wait for 4years before throwing out Mohammed Morsi !

    • Warmonger

If you ever want us to seriously assess your request of casting Buhari away, never do so with the thumbnail or handle of anything Jonathan. Try picking Buhari’s transgressions which are already beginning to accumulate. My hunch is that if you give Jonathan another 100 years, he will still fail. The man is irredeemable!!!
As for Buhari, some of us are already taking notes, our PVCs tightly in our hands, as we believe no employer should shirk from firing a mediocre or negligent staffer.

      • Burning spear

Your regional worries about Jonathan has a lot to do with his Ijawness period———–Jonathan was not removed from power by the USA because he did not perform——-it was his Ijaw tribal marks that sent him packing from Aso Rock——–The hatred for him started soon after the death of Yara Adua—He was only able to use the status of his office to remain in power–4 the 5 yrs he was there—-In spite of efforts made by Dambazua to sack his government via the prompting of Buhari–Today Dambazua who stole every penny that he could lay his hands in in the army and the presidency is the (go to) in the government of Buhari–Again who is probing how he smuggled Yara Adua into Nigeria from Mecca? -Is it Obj-or Buhari the thief–? Nigerians seems to be playing games with each others thoughts—We all know Buhari has failed Nigeria–but the (moaning mourners) in APC, to throw in the towel—Yet when we ask for separation they cry to the god of unity around our oil wells in the creeks of the SS-for help–let my people go—-animals

  • Very Proud Oily IZON Redeemer

Now that Prof Itse Sagay has denied the Tribune Interview, lets look back and see what the Learned Prof has fed his students and followers over the years while we wait for him to deny them too.

Extracts of speech delivered by Professor Sagay (SAN), former Head of Law Department of University of Benin, at the fourth sensitisation programme organised by the Ibori Vanguard at the Lagoon Restaurant, Lagos.

“As Omoruyi and many other Scholars and Writers have noted, the Arewa North has always ensured that it controlled the Military, particularly the Army, as an insurance of its retention of power. The 1966 coup was a devastating blow against the Arewa North – the beneficiaries of the colonial legacy. Their shock and pain did not arise from the death of Balewa, Ahmadu Bello and their military officers – no. Their main grievance was loss of power to the Ibos. That is how they perceived Ironsi’s rise to power.

Therefore, the carefully orchestrated uprisings in the North in May 1966, and the violent and bloody coup that followed it in July were not reactions to Decree 32 of 1966, abolishing the Regions and unifying the civil services of the country. The Decree was a convenient excise for the Northern bid to seize back power.

For as we have seen, soon after power was restored to the North through Gowon and those behind him, they (the Northerners in powers) introduced a level of unitary government this country had never known and embarked on a deliberate programme for dismantling all federal structures in the country as we saw earlier in the series of Decrees transferring State resources to the Federal Government. The truth of the matter was power, raw power. It is also interesting to recall that the attempt of the North to secede after the counter-coup of July 1966, was halted when it was pointed out to them that in seceding, they were in effect divorcing the young lady of wealth, with her oil, seaports, etc.

The whole saga of June 12, 1993 is merely a manifestation of the belief religiously held by the Arewa North that power was transferred to them as a right by the colonial masters. Omoruyi recalls that Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, the Sultan of Sokoto, vehemently opposed General Babangida’s preparation for the June 12, 1993 elections on behalf of the Northern Leadership because the North was not able to decide the outcome in favour of the North before hand. He then prevailed on Babangida to cancel the presidential election, because the result was a reversal of the British legacy. So much then for Dasuki’s characterisation of the event as Allah’s will.”

  • Fairgame

I am beginning to suspect that Buhari’s government has murdered this man. I can’t even think about the consequences of that so I sincerely hope not. Buhari has to produce this man hale and healthy for his followers and the Shiite world to see because if his blood has been spilled like that of Muhammed Yusuf then Buhari has murdered sleep and can sleep no more. Biko Haram would be child’s play. This situation has to be controlled. And that evil el Rufai of Kaduna state has to answer for his support of this massacre of shias and must stop inflaming tensions by his comments. God help Nigeria!

    • musa aliyu

Whose sleep is murdered? Yours? Because a lawless dissident is killed in gunshot exchange? So you mean he should be allowed to be above the law? Mtchewww!

    • anonymous

it’s ur sleep dats murdered, not the sleep of peace-loving Nigerians who have bin annihilating by radical and lawless sects for decades. dis menace should be nipped in d bud b4 its too late.

    • Suleiman

Empty threats! This man has drank so much blood and caused so much mayhem in this country that he must be tried for treason. In 1978 when he led the “Islam Only” riots in which every passing vehicle was forcefully stopped and painted with the words, “Islam Only”, where every building along the road was painted with the words “Islam Only” life cam to a standstill for days in Zaria and Kaduna because of this man’s anti-Nigeria diatribes. The man was later expelled by the authorities of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for spearheading these crises. The late Sheik Abubakar Gumi then sponsored him to Iran where he completed his studies and acquired a masters in Islamic Revolutions there. He came back, with the support of the Iranian government to start the movement. The man does not recognize the constitution, flag and national pledge of Nigeria, neither does he recognize any constituted authority. Just two weeks before this incidence, the whole town of Zaia was brought to a standstill by the movement’s annual pilgrimage to his shrine. Prior to this, his group confronted the Military in Zaria around October 2014 in which his three sons where killed. Must he kill every member of his family to gain more popularity? This people have constituted themselves into the law, harassing innocent people and threatening the local economy. Why is Iran the only country making noise? The answer is simple, Iran is the one sponsoring this group and our government should review our relationship with Iran, which is not as one of the state sponsors of terrorism. Each time this man gathers his crowds, he send pictures and videos to Iran to get more money. The issue is not about religious piety but simply about money to live an opulent lifestyle. Fairgame, please quit deceiving yourselves and the illiterate members of your sect/cult because you are not practicing Islam but paganism. An attack on the COAS is an attack on Nigeria’s armed forces and a declaration of war; it is an attack on Nigeria and attempt to overthrow the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. El Zayzaky’s threats must not be treaty with kids globes like we did of Boko Haram which has become out of country. He is a terrorist and must be tried for treason and as a terrorist! Anything short of this would embolden his group or other groups in Nigeria to take up arms and rise against the state. His source of arms must be investigated and the starting point should be Iran. No one must be seen to be above the law and bigger than Nigeria.
