Buhari hails Nigerians, congratulates Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari

Nigeria’s President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has dedicated his win to Nigerians, saying they are the ultimate victors.

In a televised speech Wednesday, after the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega, officially declared him the winner of Saturday’s presidential election, Mr. Buhari said “In a more profound way, it is you, Nigerians that have won. The people have shown their love for our nation and their belief in democracy”.

Mr. Buhari said Nigerians have made history, and that it was the resolve of Nigerians that made the change they were yearning for possible.

“The good people of Nigeria, answered the call of history. When the account of this fine moment is written, it will be said that it was the people themselves who led this nation to democracy,” he said.

“You stood in line patiently for hours in the sun, rain and then in the dark to cast your ballots. Even when the vote was extended to Sunday in some places, you still performed your civic duty. You did so peacefully. You voted with your heart. Your vote affirms that you believe Nigeria’s future can be better than what it is today.

“You voted for change and now change has come,” he said.

Respect for President Jonathan

Mr. Buhari also confirmed that he received a call from President Goodluck Jonathan “at exactly 5:15pm” congratulating him for his victory.

“For this I want all Nigerians to join me in congratulating and appreciating Mr President for his statesmanship,” he said.

He also said Mr. Jonathan engaged in a spirited campaign and was a worthy opponent.

“I extend my hand of fellowship to him. I look forward to meeting him soon as we plan the transition from one administration to another. He will receive nothing but understanding, cooperation and respect from me and my team,” Mr. Buhari said

The president-elect also thanked Nigerians for putting their faith in him, even as he said the country has now joined the ranks of those nations that have used the ballot box to peacefully change an incumbent President in a free and fair election.

“To me this is indeed historic,” he said.

Mr. Buhari reiterated his earlier call to all his supporters to remain peaceful as they go about their celebrations and not engage those who never wanted a change.

“Most people will welcome the result because it is the one they voted for. Others will naturally be disappointed. I ask that we all be circumspect, respectful and peaceful in these times,” he said.

He said the electioneering was a hard- fought contest, adding emotions are presently high.

“We must not allow them to get the better of us. This is not the time for confrontation. This is a moment that we must begin to heal the wounds and work toward a better future.

“We do this first by extending a hand of friendship and conciliation across the political divide. We hope and pray our friends in other parties reciprocate,” he said.

Mr. Buhari said he will address the nation after receiving his certificate of return from INEC possibly Wednesday.

2015 ELECTION WAS WASTE OF MONEY FOR BUHARI

For a poor country, Nigeria can actually afford to be frugal This election was pure waste of money.
It has no consequence; regardless that Buhari had 2.5million more votes than his closest contestant.
The election was at best an entertainment after Buhari presented affidavit in December 2014 saying
he obtained WASC but can’t show it or prove it. So, why waste money staging an election for such dubious
claimant? That’s prodigal. The number of votes Buhari won is moot. He can’t be sworn in under the law.

(2)………..2015 ELECTION WAS WASTE OF MONEY FOR BUHARI

Buhari is deemed constitutionally dis-qualified for giving false certificate by recitation in affidavit to INEC.
Unless he shows his WASC by tendering it – which he’s not done since December – he ‘s wasting his time.
By common sense he may never be able to show it, actually, so, what’s an election worth for such person?

The number of votes Buhari won cannot replace the Constitution stipulating MANDATORY dis-qualification.
Or does a concession of defeat by President Jonathan give Buhari the WASC Buhari does not have or show.

It is the same as thinking that you are very rich after many years of pretending that you are rich, even though you don’t own a kobo. That is exactly what has got Jonathan into his current state of his embarrassing rejection. He overrated his delusions and believed firmly that they were realities! It is a psychological and psychiatric illness!

Am really disappointed in the South West people, and I give my utmost respect to the Southern Nigerians. In fact if this election had happened before getting married, I wouldn’t have married my fellow Yoruba person, really disappointed in my region.

I am happy that I grew up in a family that accommodated different political persuasions. Everyone was allowed to promote the party they support and their reasons for that support. This is what democracy should be and you should judge your wife by the support and love she gives your family. It should not be based on her ethnic origin or the politics she prefers.

Before the elections it was a taboo to even mention the name of Jonathan in the Fulani North–Not to talk of the Yorubas–The level of hatred the Yorubas had for Jonathan was too scary–for comfort—till date I do not really know what he did to offend them—The post of speaker was sold by tinubu to the Fulanis—Kids as young as 4 were seen voting openly in the North–They were accredited by INEC–officials—Jega deliberately disfranches the people of the south-east–Jonathan was ousted in a coup organized by Jega—because of his tribal marks—Obj handed over power to GMB–period———————————–EVEN IF IT WILL TAKE US ANOTHER 100 YRS SEPARATION IS THE BEST OPTION———WE CANNOT RESIDE IN A COUNTRY WHERE CERTAIN TRIBES FELL SUPERIOR TO OTHERS—–AND WOULD THEREFORE WANT TO CALL THE SHOTS ALL THE TIME–Elites from the old regions of Nigerian have been in power since 1960———-with nothing to show for it—we still cry for light–water–health and good roads—Jonathan foolishly fought for Nigeria and forgot his people————-who were not even allowed to enjoy his scholarship schemes——-the master slave relationship will continue unabated—between us and them in d creeks–I never for one moment believed the Ibos will stand by Jonathan—never–trusted the Yorubas to a fault–now i know better-

I hope you are not out of your medication. Seek help urgently my dear brother…

    • D.A

You are a joker. The Yoruba had for years been telling Jonathan that we feel marginalized. Not only in the loss of speaker but in the ministries and parastatals headed by his ibo ministers. Jonathan did nothing about it.

His response was to listen to our concerns and do very little about. He then offered the Yorubas the position of chief of staff the presidency last year and (true to form) appointed an igbo commercial banker with no monetary experience whatsoever as CBN governor over the head of the more experienced monetary expert Sarah Alade. We had had enough of his marginalisation. We put that man there and our votes removed him. If Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Oyo , Kwara and Kogi had voted for Jonathan instead of Buhari, Jonathan would still be president today! He treated us with contempt for most of his time there. We treated him fairly in return. He still got over 40% of the votes in the SW (way more than he deserved considering his behaviour to us).

I join in congratulating Gen. Buhari on his hard won victory, for being exemplary in resilience and life endeavours. I congratulate, most especially, President Goodluck Jonathan for showing exceptional statesmanship that is unparallelled and unrivaled in the history of political contestation in Nigeria. I also congratulate the youths of Southern Nigeria and the Middle Belt and in particular, of the South South of Nigeria for accepting the outcome as the will of the people and the will of God; even though some of them are shocked and aggrieved, they are united in the belief that Nigeria belongs to all, that some other Nigerians have the right to differ, that outcomes must not justify a birth right or a sense of entitlement, that though we may jaw-jaw, in the register of our conscience should exist the truth and understanding, the outcome should not be one of “Our MUST Be There.” Which are critical issues that our “All is well” public commentators pretend over and fail to educate the younger generation.

For my part, I will always hold Gen. Buhari’s government up to its words – promise and observations during campaigns. One of which is that I am now certain that as from May 29, there will be a CHANGE in the price of pms in Nigeria. A litre of petrol will be selling for N45 as he had told us during campaigns that the PDP led government is cheating us by charging N87 per a litre. That given the slump in the world oil market, the honest and correct price of a litre of petrol in Nigeria should be N45. I am assuredly hopeful of the first CHANGE from that directions.

    • tundemash

      Thanks very much for welcoming the needed change and your resolve to hold APC to their campaign promises is welcomed. I assure you APC will pursue the agenda of reducing the pump price of fuel by a combination of the following;
      1. Repair our refineries
      2. Eliminate corruption within NNPC #
      3. Recover our stolen funds among which is the $20bn
      4. Eliminate the regime of fuel subsidy through the stoppage of fuel importation which will be a follow up from the refinery maintenance.
      5. Prosecute the oil subsidy rogues whch seems to have been imposibble under this regime since 2012 we were promised that during the fule subsidy protest.

      • Okey

While my Congratulations remain, please make no attempt to deny me the Change. The CHANGE in pms pump rice is not explained during campaigns as “futuristic.” No, it is based on fall / slump in sales price of crude oil which leads to a fall in the price of imported pms (refined petroleum product). APC through Gen. Buhari pointed this out, which led to GEJ reducing the pump price to N87 a litre. Still, at N87 per litre, APC said the GEJ government is cheating Nigeria, they insisted that the true and honest price should be N45 a litre. Now, I refuse to believe that that was a mere campaign gimmick calculated to smear Jonathan. No, I refuse to believe that. It is a function of world oil price and never a futuristic intention.

That being the case, I am assuredly confident that the pump price of petrol in Nigeria will go down drastically as from May 29, 2015.

        • tundemash

No one is denying your CHANGE. Frame it and put it in your living room.
Aside fuel price, go to APC website and get educated on their manifesto.

          • G.O

@tundemash why do you call names? What is wrong holding someone accountable? Its good for democracy.

          • tundemash

Is there anywhere I said u should not hold in anyone in leadership position accountable ? if there is, please copy & paste it here else forever keep quiet. We know those still hurting !

          • Okey

T-Mess, CHANGE will not be felt from the website, we have to feel it in our lives. And we are taking off with just one, first i.e. reduction in the pump price of the pms in Nigeria in line with APC demand during campaigns. Please, I won’t permit you creating a different impression of them on that. Repeat, I am quite certain that the General and APC will not disappoint us on May 29, 2015 in that respect.

On WASC certificate, it is now settled that in Nigeria, for whatever purpose, certificate is no longer desirable and not at all required. You can then see the undisirability of any discourse anywhere about that. Again, please, don’t re-awake a settled issue.

          • tundemash

            I have not told u to feel the CHNAGE from website, Olodo. What I said up there is ;
Aside fuel price, go to APC website and get educated on their manifesto so that you have other issues you can hold them unto; it s good for democracy.

I know u are still hurting and u are free to keep jabbing the air. You did it all through Dumbo’s reign and you still ended holding the wrong end of the stick. If APC does not do what you want, you should know what to do in 2019; Vote them out with your PVC in 2019. That is the power u have got and that is what we just did with Dumbo.

          • Okey

T-Mess, did you write/mean we should expect the CARNAGE ? (your first paragraph)

          • tundemash

Are u on apeteshi ….. was that carnage ?

          • Okey

I just finished a bowl of amala and gbegiri soup before reading your post. What you wrote there passes itself off as CARNAGE. And I ask, why now that we are about to savour a reduction in the price of pms ?

  • Yusuf Ismaila

I congratulate Buhari for winning the election I also congratulate President Jonathan for conducting free and fair elections. I am happy for PDP for being an opposition party now I hope they will hold gas as did APC and its men especially Lai Muhammed. APC supports should know that Buhari’s victory is not their own alone for especially in the north there are large number of PDP who voted for Buhari during the election. I also advise PDP to cleanse its folds. Bamanga Tukur, Jonah Jang, Godswill Akpavio and Patience Jonathan are the architect of the PDP’s failure. Bamanga Tukur convinced the President in seeing nothing wrong in the decamping saga of the Five governors, break the Governors forum by creating the PDP governors forum which was inactive through out its existent, these created the syndrome of 16>19. the votes for the 2014 decamped governors were enough to have made Jonathan wins the election but Tukur advised the president to disregard them and see what that translated into against the PDP today. Jona Jang deceived the President by making him to believed that 16> 19 and such can be deployed during the 2015 election. Akpavio was a defector chief of staff who made the President believed that they can do it for him. Mama peace insulted everybody in the North during her campaign rally to the extent of telling northerners that they marry many wives gave birth to so many children and threw them away. So it was those many children in the north that were used to voted her husband out and threw her out of the Villa.

Mr President-Elect, Congrats. Your success in this election has become a reference point as a source of inspiration to the younger generation that irrespective of how many times you might have fell, you can still rise up and stand tall for the whole World to see. Your integrity, uprightness and ultimately the trust that Nigerians have in you are some of the ingredients that take you to this level. Try as much as you can not to let Nigerians down. I pray and wish you a successful reign in office as you plan to take the oath of office.

THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION AND IMPUNITY MUST BE IN THE FRONT BURNER AND THE NUMBER ON PRIORITY OF THE IN COMING BUHARI ADMINISTRATION. THE NEXT MAJOR BATTLE IS THE ECONOMY, THAT HAS BEEN VERY SEVERELY DESTROYED AND BASTARDISED BY BY THIS GOODLUCK JONATHAN OUT GOING ADMINISTRATION. WE MUST ASK QUESTIONS AND DEMAND IMMEDIATE ANSWERS FROM EVERY PERSON THAT WAS RECKLESSLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS VERY GRAVE ECONOMIC CALAMITY OR CATASTROPHE, BUT IN DOING SO WE MUST APPLY VERY DUE PROCESSES AND VERY DILIGENT METHODS AND APPROACHES.IT IS A VERY DAUNTING TASK CONFRONTING THE IN COMING BUHAHI’S ADMINISTRATION, BUT WE ARE VERY CONVINCED THAT HE HAS THE CAPACITY AND THE ABILITY AND THAT HE IS A VERY WILLING, READY AND ABLE PERSON FOR THESE VERY GREAT JOBS. I ONCE AGAIN EXTEND MY CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PRESIDENT ELECT BUHAHI. I WILL ALSO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ASK THOSE WHO CALLED ME A LOT OF UNPRINTABLE NAMES WHEN I SAID FROM DAY ONE THAT GOODLUCK JONATHAN WILL BE DEFEATED VERY CONVINCINGLY BY BUHARI. Nigerians are waiting to see the change and the making of $1 to 1 Naira as you promised during your can pain.

Sai Buhari. What a gentleman. I am so pleased that Buhari is now in power so that civility and correct governance can take hold.We were essentially held hostage by a bunch of criminals and brutes in the Jonathan administration.

  • MilitaryPolice01

Buhari must include in his blueprint the building of at least 6 maximum security prisons in the six geopolitical zones.Security preemptive research has found out that at least 40 percent of the people moving round freely in Nigeria are actually meant to be in prison. Therefore the President and C in C Muhammadu Abraham Lincoln Buhari must set a yearly target to capture, prosecute and jail as many criminals (especially politicians) as possible;the judiciary should also be reorganized so that Judges are promoted and incentivised according to how many criminals they jail annually, the more criminals you jail lawfully the more promotion you get and rise through the ranks. This strategy should be part of the overall state of emergency he should declare in our security sector.War Against Indiscipline and Corruption WAI-C should be brought back in full force, those of us around in 1984 remember the impact it had (may Tunde Idiagbon continue to rest in peace). If Nuhu Ribadu loses his contest next week to APC,he should be sent back to EFCC with full powers to resurrect it and commence the jailing and prosecution of the nations plunderers.Nigeria must be recaptured from the hands of these vampires

    • tundemash

Thanks be to the God of Heaven and earth who endorsed our decree that only persons who have part to play in His plan for Nigeria at this time to come to power during the elections. Now, we know that Gen Muhammadu Buhari has a part to play in God’s plan for Nigeria. Nigerians please continue to pray for him and his team for good health and divine wisdom to enable the new Government to be inaugurated on 29th May 2015 to fulfil their campaign promises so that the people will rejoice! I use this opportunity to call on people of my dear state, Akwa Ibom, to rally round Umana Okon Umana and vote him and the APC into Government to facilitate the support and patronage of the Federal Government presided over by General Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. We should recognize that ours is no more a “PDP” state! Common sense dictates that we align ourselves with the new ruling party in the executive and legislative arms of the Federal Government. God has served us justice. We received reports that the Presidential and National Assembly elections were manipulated just like the PDP Gubernatorial primaries before! Our God saw the injustice and has intervened. Hallelujah!

If l may, l counsel the people of our dear state, Akwa Ibom to rally round Umana Okon Umana and vote for the APC in the coming Governorship and State House of Assembly elections on May 11 2015, otherwise, we should not complain if we are not given good slots or excluded from the new Federal Government to be inaugurated on 29th May 2015. Ours is no more so called “PDP” state, so it is good tactical and strategic move to massively support the new ruling party in the executive and legislative arms of the Federal Government in Abuja. Comments from as many as see this post are welcome. I can be reached at baeniang@yahoo.com.

  • OPEN ADVICE TO President-elect Buhari:
The cause of Corruption in Nigeria is this: Public and private workers are not
being paid livable wages, and the shortchange is what erstwhile government
officials embezzle. Please, arrange to pay all workers wages enough for their
monthly living and expenses, then they will not need to take bribes and loot
the treasury, and anyone who then does will have to pay dearly. When Nigerians workers
are paid livable wages, they will individually and severally self-develop the
country and the GDP and taxable income will increase. Over 170,000,000 people will
all be self-developing the country instead of a few overworked beaurocrats.

Then also, the government surplus fund will be reduced to so little and no room
will be left for massive stealing. Then, only politicians, who are interested
in working for the people and not in looting, will vie for public posts.. Thank
you, sir. May God bless your regime and Nigeria too.

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS. Sai Buhari, Fe Buhari, Love Buhari, March
28, Nigerians Voted Buhari, DESTROYER of Maitatsine and Boko Haram and of all
Corruption in government, as President of Nigeria.
