Why we don’t want voter card readers — Namadi Sambo

Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo; Photo credits: Desert Herald

The Nigerian presidency has expressed concern with the use of voter card readers for the forthcoming elections, questioning its legality and efficiency, and defending an earlier position of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on the matter.

Vice President Namadi Sambo said Thursday that while his party was not against the use of card readers, which the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says will help curb vote fraud, it was concerned whether the decision is backed by law and about the possibility of many Nigerians being disenfranchised.

The PDP has strongly criticised the use of card reading machines for the polls, while the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, backs INEC’s plan to deploy them for what is billed to be a close poll.

The ruling party argues that the use of any machine is not allowed under Nigerian electoral laws, but INEC says the electronic readers will be used only for card verification, and not voting.

The electoral body has also assured that it will provide for manual screening of voters where the machines fail, to ensure no one is disenfranchised – another concern expressed by the PDP.

The APC defends INEC, saying it welcomes any effort to ensure credible polls. The party accuses the PDP of plotting to rig the elections, hence its decision to oppose machine readers.

Mr. Sambo’s remarks, Thursday, were the first from the presidency on the card reader controversy.

Speaking in Kano, Mr. Sambo said his party cannot be afraid of the card readers as it is certain of winning the presidential and governorship elections.

He said the party was only kicking against the use of the machines, as they may fail, leading to the disenfranchisement of many Nigerians.

The vice president also questioned the machine’s place in the Electoral Law.

“If it is not there (in the law) then does it mean it is illegal? And can we depend on an illegal thing when we are talking of a free and fair election that will lead to having credible leaders?” he asked.

He said the PDP was making frantic efforts to ensure Nigerians elect leaders through an election worthy of international recognition.

Mr. Sambo urged Nigerians to take a careful look at the electoral law and see whether the use of card readers is recognized.

He said the PDP is the only party for Nigerians, being fully established in all parts of the country.

“Our party has been there since 1998,” he said. “It has never changed name or colour. It is the party Nigerians want and the party they will vote in to continue doing good things.”

Pdp is used to rigging hence it must oppose every move to make elections free, fair and credible.

  • Concerned

Were cards readers around when the electoral laws were written?

This is a party that purports to want to use technology to fight corruption but when an opportunity arises to do so they run scared!

  • djay

Its only when it situation does not favour pdp that’s when they want to use the law as a guide. Useless and irresponsible govt, Nigerians will kick you people out come May 28th.

Card reader has come to stay

  • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Mr. Sambo, you make us laugh!

Did a Court not pronounce recently that the Electronic Card Reader is ok to use for validating (accreditation) the voters? It is not to be used for the election itself!

Are you above the Courts of Law?

It is amusing that the same PDP that claims GMB is “analogue” while it is “digital” is the same one running scared from technology.

Is this the definition of the “technology” that Mr. Jonothing was planning to use in “fighting corruption”?

    • djay

Have you forgotten pdp is a drowning party, they won’t mind destroying any good intention just 4 their demonic interest.

They don’t want card readers because it will expose the millions of fake votes they claim in every election and with which they steal power and proceed to steal the nation blind. The more the PDP presses this shameful reason, the more I get convinced that they are gone. It is indeed very pathetic but Nigerians must nit surrender to this rouge party and ensure they use every legal means to send them home this March.

It is true that PDP has been there from the beginning and because of that they are able to establish structures in all the localities of the nation. It is one reason why it should be popular if that is the purpose and for the same reason it can be notorious if that is the path the chose to follow. clearly they chose the later path

  • ODOFIN, Lagos

People masquerading as various NGOs against card-readers are beginning to speak up. pdp governors’ forum, sambo and gej are the ones behind public noises & nuisance against card readers. They are hoping to rig the election but it is too late for them. pdp has never won any free, fair and credible election since 1999. they have always been rigging elections

  • Ayo Odunsi

CARD READER IS A TRAP SET UP BY JEGA & APC

PDP must vehemently oppose the use of Card Readers for the 2015 General Elections.

The plan of Jega and APC is to spoil PDP’s victory by sponsoring a suit seeking to invalidate the 2015 General elections because Card Readers were used.

Most Nigerian Judges are already on Bola Tinubu’s payroll and they write their judgements in Tinubu’s bedroom … check out Justice Gabriel Kolawole, Justice John Tsoho and Justice Ibrahim Buba to mention just a few.

I was thinking that the Vice President is a Brilliant person but with this statement I quote “Why we don’t want voter reader card ” he has joined the group of Agbero Politician among the rangs of PDP.
PDP knows that with the voter reader it will be difficult for them to rig this 28 March 2015 elections.
The whole world watched in utterdisgust and amazement as Nigeria plunked from one Crisis to another because PDP want to stay in power by all means. Nigeria are prepared to vote them out for ever.

Worse still, you claimed you were quoting the VP by the statement; ‘why we don’t want voter reader card’.
If you were not in the typical APC haste to cast aspersions on the VP, you would’ve seen that that statement was just one of PT’S dummies they sell u guys regularly! That statement was a misleading inference by PT. Or can you show anywhere PT gave the actual quote??

Can election lawfully hold on 28th March – without YDP participating?

“The defendant (INEC) did not discharge its obligation of informing the plaintiff
(YDP) of the decision not to register it as a political party within the 30 days,
as clearly stipulated in section 78 (4) of the Electoral Act. The effect of not
informing the plaintiff within 30 days of the defendant’s decision to register
the plaintiff as a political party is clearly ‎spelt out in section 78(4) of the Act
which is that the plaintiff (YDP) is deemed to have been registered as a
political party by virtue of law.

“It is hereby declared that the defendant (INEC) has no
reason whatsoever to refuse to issue the plaintiff (Young Democratic Party –
YDP) with its certificate of registration, being that the plaintiff was deemed
registered as a political party by virtue of the provisions of the Electoral
Act; particularly Section 78(4), and also considering the letter from the Plaintiff
to the defendant, dated August 13, 2014 titled: Re: Application for

Do you really know what you’re saying? No!

Am going to say this again, Jonathan and his pdp crooks will do anything to scuttle the election even with glaringly impunity. They are going to take Nigerians for granted and dare Nigerians. This is well indicated in Fayose’s statement that nothing will happen if they sack Jega or do anything illegal. Nigerians aren’t seen nothing. APC should be ready to form a parallel government and Nigerians should brace up.

They know with the card reader technology all their rigging plans will come to naught. So they will do anything to stop it.

See foolishness at the high level, Nigerian may not stand up against postponement of Feb14 election but will stand and fight against rigging. Card reader is for detection of fake PVCs before voting starts.

  • Du Covenant

This is beyond belief, I thought it was just rumours….why in the Nigerian constitution says that a foreign financial entity (Mastercard) should manage our National ID?. Can anybody believe such a terrible lost of our sovereignity to allow a private foreign organisation to be in possession of our ID data?. No wonder we are so backward in all aspects if these how those in charge building our nation think. The card reader is not a voting tool, the clue is in the name for God sake!. It is only going to verify the person presenting the PVC to go and vote. Once this persons votes, the same same PVC and the same finger print will not be able to vote anywhere again. Is this not what we all want rather than the chaos that characterizes anything we try to do?. This process will quicker, easier on the voter instead of standing in line for the whole day just to cast your vote. The big thieves usually are the first to vote and run back to their air conditioned homes, offices while we languish in the sun!. Instead of INEC be congratulated for taking us forward, typical to our nature we are vilifying them what a shame. The whole world is modernizing, we stuck in the past by design of the so called elite. We must use the card reader and let heaven break loose..

  • uduakomiri

Apc is worse in rigging elections!

      • yeko

How much are they paying you guys. The truth is there for everyone to see that PDP has nothing to offer again. In a normal political environment, the opposition should be afraid of loosing election not the incumbent.

Why the fears, if there are no mischief?

      • Otigba1

If only 50% of the voters are authenticated by card readers and real results are declared, so be it. It is better than illegal thumb printing of ballot paper by APC OR PDP. The card reader doesn’t recognize PDP OR APC. We may need Option A4 as alternative. Rigging an election is equivalent to a coup

  • Thank you sir, we don’t need any card readers. we don’t even need elections. We just want you to leave Aso rock and go to Kaduna where nobody will bother you with card readers and INEC and stuff.

  • evi

The only reason I don’t support the use of card readers is because of the way apc is so desperate for it to be used. Apc does not support something and use so much energy to fight for something if they will not benefit criminally from it. It’s the same way they insisted that election must hold on Feb 14 and that inec was ready and that any attempt to shift the election from February 14 will be resisted, only for us to discover that inec was not even ready for the election and that they planned with jega to disenfranchise 23 million voters from the south so that Buhari will win the election through lopsided pvc distribution .So I call on to the FG to cancel card readers and even pvc, apc can go to hell with their self righteous indignation, they cannot do more than a dead rat.

    • Maitama Tambari

Evi(l) and false (reality) the Doyin Otukpe and FFK dogs have rear their heads again. If you listen to VP, is asking for the legality of cards reader. The debate has shifted from PVC to legality of a tool to read PVC. The VP has gotten reports from the field from those who are to rig the election for them and PDP was told that after the field trial that with this tool on groung, rigging is quite impossible. So Namani Sambo, copying his name sake, Mohammed Sambo in shifting the election, two weeks now to the election, the VP, Second in Command, is asking for the legality of a tool in election. WE BELIEVE CHANGE! YES WE CAN IN NINGERIA. ALI MUST GO. YES JONATHAN MUST GO.

    • GrandpaID

With all due respect, do you GEJ/PDP supporters even think for yourselves anymore or are you all carbon copies of GEJ, FFK and the like. Your comments usually ooze with unspeakable shallowness of the mInd. Get over yourself for a minute, in your heart, can you say this present administration is good for Nigeria? Can you actually stand before the mothers of the abducted Chibok girls and tell them that GEJ is the best for them? Can you address a stadium filled with thousands of jobless university graduates and tell them this is as good as it gets in Nigeria? Can you face an army with obsolete weapons to go to battle with Boko Haram? Can you deliver “I’m sorry” message to the families of soldgers and police officers killed in the line of duty? Can you deliver message to the families of those burnt to death in various substandard plane crashes? What about Nigerian refugees in their own country, corruption, electricity – the list goes on. Nigeria has become a country where human lives have no value. All these atrocities happend under GEJ’s watch. When you have a president defending corruption, and have the nerve to be asking for your vote, then something is seriously wrong. In my opinion, he should not only have been impeached a long time ago, he should also face charges against Nigerians and against humanity.

    • Olufemi Adebayo

APC know they will win a free and fair election and PDP cant without rigging

  • Reality

Why we are kicking against the card reader because APC has a lot of clone cards already. Remember the incident when the DSS burst into their office in Lagos. That’s the reason. GEJTILL2019

    • GrandpaID

Your comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. If in fact APC has lots of clone cards as you say, shouldn’t it be APC objecting to the use of the card readers so that the clones will not be detected? Your problem is that you want to rig the election, plain and simple.

    • Olufemi Adebayo

If you are sure why are you so scared of a process that will expose fraud. Is the use of ATM in the banking act? Will you get a debit card without a PIN?

  • Aminu Baba

I knew that sooner or later the big fish will rear its head. This job is too big for small fries like Fayose and Kayode. Their rigging expertise is still at the analogue level. They have not yet acquired digital capabilities.

Mandybazz, The UGLY FACE RACCOON don’t hav a place in Kaduna wo, nd Zaria ppl hav been hunting for even his shadow since when they missed him during d lst elctn when his house was burnt down. But he may hav a place in Otueke.
Evi, I think yur own issue is serious, Yu are calling on FG to cancel Card reader or PVC? Yu see my problem with Yu is this yur drinking habit. So Yu are calling on d FG as what? Yu as Obama or Banki Mun? Anyway, I think Yu should hav something better than FG, I think Yu know yur father, then cal on yur father to Cancel it for Yu not FG. FG is for all of us nd hav to contact others b4 doing dat, but yur father is for Yu alone. …..nd pls don’t complain dat Yu are a son of thousand fathers, I don’t hav any solution for dat yur problem. **GEJ has completed 10 Power plants within 3years, which is the FIRST and highest record by any President in Nigeria living or dead. So why re ignorant people talking as if the Power issue is an instant magic thing. Obviously with our large population, we will need more power plants to generate more power.
6.Our electricity generation reached its all-time peak of 4500 megawatts for the FIRST TIME in 2012.

If you have chosen to deny the visible progress of this administration in the past 5+- years (and you know yourselves) and condemn every good effort of the Government, too sad, but I will not join you to do the same. If your denial of these strides means you love Nigeria more than the rest of us, then go ahead. But trust me, when favor knocks on your door, so shall you deny it ignorantly. This is not where we should but the transformation train is in progress.
I will bring you more updates and I know some of y’all just hate to love the truth

Mirage spear, Nigeria, as the largest economy, do you know how it was done? Once upon a time, the bureaucrats were waiting for a Public Officer, just like Madam Finance had done without trickle effect to the masses, to come out to make announcement to the public about the economic statistic – GDP. What came out from his mouth confused the bureaucrats. He said that they were”cooking the figures” and it couldn’t add up. The railway had been working here and there, the new tracks contracted out Abuja to Kaduna by late President Yar Adua is still under construction, six years after his death. What are you trying to tell us? President Ibrahim B. Babangida introduced cell phones to Nigerians, President Sani Abacha expanded them. President Obasanjo Commercialized and Privatised the Sector. President Yar Adua/President Jonathan enjoying the efforts. Where are your achievements. In the 70s, GMB, when he was Minister of Petroleum and Chairman NNPC, built two Refineries in Nigeria. He was there for four years. How many refineries has President Jonathan built for Nigeria in his six years? WE BELIEVE CHANGE! YES WE CAN IN NIGERIA. ALI MUST GO. YES JONATHAN MUST GO.

    • August January

Millions of power plants completed, yet you still charge your phone with “I better pass my neighbour”. Mumu!

  • OC

But Mr VP, u claim to be a “young” team compared to GMB’s, yet I’m amazed that u know nothing about Computer Age and what it brings. Computer has universal application with various benefits: governance, agriculture, medicine, university matric exam, accounts & audit, law etc etc. What is wrong if it is applied to voter accreditation with the obvious benefit of discouraging rigging in particular?

  • Osasoba

Burning spear or whatever you call your name, stop leaving in a fools paradise. How does statistics impart positively on the lives of Nigerians? Rather life is becoming more more unbearable under your eldorado statistics. Please we are tired of transformation from bad to worse. Nigerians irrespective of religion or ethnicity lets unite to salvage this country from the shackles of backwardness inflicted by pdpigs. Truth be told,we have never had it this rough and bad under a clueless and corrupt leadership. For those benefitting from this corrupt leadership continue living in your fools paradise. We in the majority are changing the fortunes of this nation, come march 28,this is INEVITABLE!

  • brightdestiny

  • favourtalk

What a shame, how do we end up with this set of leaders, u bet that it was a great mistake that needs to be corrected now, how can they allow Jam and say card reader is not good at this century? They really surprised us. We deserve better than this once. We need change urgently

  • pheliciti

By the same token, use of computers in collating results should be disallowed since its not specifically stated in the Electoral Act. Abi?

  • kas

This burning nonsense or burning spares, I think Yu are one of d victims of this govt wo. Those dat lost there lives in one way or d other as a result of this govts inefficiency should b resting in peace any where they are bcos they are innocent. I think Yu dat is alive Yu are suffering more Dan any other Nigerian. Why bcos Yu obviously lack yur religious knowledge nd d western education frm d way Yu talked. Yu also sounds hungry. There will b no time to waste on ppl like Yu, my only prayers is God should bring d change dat everyone is waiting for, so dat illiterate like Yu can then go to schul nd become literate. DUNDY UNITED is yur new nickname, CONGRATULATIONS.

  • Is it not derogatory for some of us to be calling ourselves, “Lost Israel”?
