EFCC arrests Ebonyi Governor’s son, Nnanna Elechi, over alleged money laundering offences

Governor Martins Elechi of Ebonyi

Elechi Nnanna Elechi, son of Ebonyi State governor, Martin Elechi, is currently being quizzed by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Sources at the anti- graft agency confided in PREMIUM TIMES that the member of the Ebonyi first family who arrived the Commission’s head office in Abuja Thursday morning is being grilled over allegations of money laundering running into millions of naira .

He is alleged to be the face of the family’s company that profited from contracts from the state and local governments running into millions of naira and which remain unexecuted less than four months to the end of his father’s tenure.

Mr. Elechi was yet to be released when PREMIUM TIMES checked with EFCC sources at 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Last week the anti-graft agency quizzed the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Works, Cornelius Onwe; while the state’s Accountant General, Edwin Igbele; Commissioner for Finance, Timothy Ogbonnaya Odaa; and Commissioner for Local government and Chieftaincy Matters, Cele Nwali had earlier been being quizzed by operatives of the EFCC, in Abuja.

They were all fingered in allegations of fraud regarding an Asphalt Project earmarked for the 13 local government of the state by the Elechi administration for which monies running into millions of naira was deducted at source, from local government accounts.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached to comment for this story. He did not answer or return multiple calls made to him. He also did not answer a text message sent to him.

Governor Elechi, a second term governor, will step down on May 29 this year, and investigators suggest he too might be interrogated and prosecuted after his tenure.

Governors and their deputies, just like the President and his vice, are constitutionally immune from trial in Nigeria until after their tenures.

Selective persecution by PDP led EFCC. Once you fall out of favor with them, they come after you. Once you support their criminal government, they drop all charges against you. Useless government.

    • djay

Highly irresponsible one indeed. Gej is one individual who can’t be trusted an as such doesn’t deserve a second chance.

      • glo

        True.

        • Lee

I thank God for who He is – the Almighty One. Elechi was ranting last year that he was totally in support of GEJ and at that time he was a saint. Now that he is out of favour, I cannot but wish him the very best along with his children in the hand of GEJ.

  • Wähala

Just like Sule Lamido, he refused to play ball with PDP goons and encouraged the defection of thousands of party loyalist to LP while keeping a foot in the PDP himself. His unforgivable sin was stepping on the fat toes of Anyim Pius Anyim, the Gorilla-headed SFG. Anyim had used police thugs from Abuja to uproot the Speaker of their House of Assembly and the ensuing political thug-of-war consumed the career of former Health Minister, Chukwu, and now it’s about to spiral out of control with mumu Lamorde and the EFCC suddenly waking up from their slumber. This is nothing but vindictive politics of man-pass-man and Gov. Elechi himself will be dragged through the mud like xGov. Sylva of Bayelsa for thumbing his nose at Abuja Boys… Hahaha chei, Dog-eat-Dog, all to the benefit of the opposition as Ebonyi State will be another open battle for the coming presidential elections.

    • SBA

Pius Ayim is one the problem GEJ has. He is incompetent and you can see it in the lack of bite in the coordination and implementation of FG policies. SSG position function best when it is occupied by technocrates. This guy got his law degree in the late 90’s and has been a career politician since then.

  • Truthometer

Dumbo is operating “one chance” presidency. Vote for GMB!

Dog eat Dog…Jonathan said he is not going to lock anyone up for corruption but will use technology to fight corruption..why is he hauling people into grilling room since he claimed that can only happen in the jungle?… Mr Jonathan has shown beyond every doubt that he lacks mental capability to govern Nigeria… his mental capability is equivalent to that of a two-year-old child.

    • kudirat

Is jonathan the problem of Ebonyi state? Is he the one that told the governor and son to fraud their people? He has done the best thing by allowing any one found wanting to be handled by the necessary agencies; this is what any responsible government should do.

      • David

How much did GEJ pay u to defend him on this platform? I pity u

        • kudirat

Just stand for what is right and truthful, I haven’t sold my conscience like you buhari’s e-rats. He has tried and if he is given more chance without been distracted with Boko haram by your sponsors, he will do better.

  • Umar Dendi

The Key to a Governor’s support lies with his Children!

  • kudirat

If the necessary agency go into action with evidence they gather, you will say they are witch hunting people that are not PDP supporters, if they don’t you will say Jonathan is a corrupt leader for not going after them. Which one this APC e-rats like una dey? Remember that Rotimi Amaechi has cases to answer yet EFCC hasn’t gone against him becos he is still a siting governor like his Ebonyi counterpart. The Son to the Ebonyi state governor is he a sitting governor that can’t be trialled now? Or have you people forgotten the son of the PDP chairman too that was trialled. GEJ believes in due process and that is what is going on.

    • David

ignorant Kudirat, why was d case against Gov. Sule Lamido’s sons Money laundering withdrawn? b/c he dropped the idea of dropping PDP for APC. Kudirat pls be wise and vote wisely

      • kudirat

What prove do you have that it was the reason? Well you desperate APC e-rat stop mis-leading Nigerians. Of course I know who to vote, am better off with someone that has his certificate at least am sure he is educated and we stand on thesame level educationally. You should take your own advice and vote right. GEJ till 2019!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guguru

Membership in PDP is forever. Terrible party

  • King Carlos

This is the handiwork of Anyim Pius Anyim. When Jonathan visited Ebonyi, they never allowed Governor Elechi to speak, and our dumbo never asked why. Now the EFCC is sent to bring down Elechi, this will further crack Jonathan’s reelection chances. I would advise the governor to deliver his state to Buhari, then he will have a peace of mind. But wetin concern me, all of them na tiff.

  • True Nigerian

Elechi is being persecuted by his own party. But it is Poetic justice, not so much a persecution. In 2011, Governor Elechi abruptly cancelled the use of a venue booked for General Buhari’s campaign. In a despotic style, Governor Elechi did the cancellation barely 48 hours before the event and after all the logistical expense incurred for the event. He also did not have any meaningful reason other than his explanation that “there is no CPC here; Ebonyi is for Goodluck”. And guess what, the pro-Goodluck Nigerians praised him and celebrated it, forgetting that this was not the democracy which some people lost their lives or personal freedoms (some people lost both) in the struggle for it. Nigerians celebrated autocracy and injustice because it gave a momentary advantage to their electoral preference.
On that day, I vomited on what Nigerians call democracy!

This country will start healing itself on the day a majority of its populace begins to see that the death of their neighbour only mirrors their own impending death if they keep silent in the face of oppression, dictatorship and totalitarianism.

Today, Martin Elechi is suffering at the hands of the unalloyed loyalty, partisan animalism, political totalitarianism, and robotic compliance, which he promoted in 2011, despite being the oldest governor in Nigeria who should have known better as an elder.

    • Wähala

      Thanks…

      • True Nigerian

You’re welcome. Thank you for thanking me! You are the only Wahala that is “holy”. 🙂 Jona and his hired minions will never agree with me on that. But they will agree after 14 Februari. (Yes, 14 February; because any postponement is a fast-forwarding of Jona’s lengthy single tenure at the ICC cell room in Hague). They are already watching his plan to use violence to postpone the election. Evidence is already building up.

  • sammyctu ode

The pdp chairman has said it a couple of weeks ago that his party is a party that “use and dump” people. I am against corruption but why EFCC wait for almost eight years before arresting the governor’s son? Another witch hunt by jonathan and pdp. Why does this president always take the wrong steps all the time? He has lost his integrity and respect, has no business contesting any election.

  • This is what OBJ wanted Jonathan to do, arrest somebody, show working and not talking. Even if we all know that its your enemy but return some money to Nigerian coffers. Wake up my man its better late than never!

BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS!! BREAKING NEWS!!!

Nigerian Masses and Nigerians in diaspora who voted against ex-military
president, BUHARI, in 2003, 2007 and 2011 presidential elections have already
adduced the following reasons behind their votes against BUHARI. They have
insisted that nothing has changed in the life of Ex-Military Dictator( Buhari)
and as such have resolutely decided to go into election on Feb., 14
Presidential Election to demonstrate their views and to send Buhari to a
    perceptual political retirement.

They spoken in harsh tones to our correspondent denouncing Buhari in all
ramifications . According to them, “below are the reasons we voted against
Buhari in the past elections and why we are prepared to VOTE against him
again this Feb., 14 Nigerian Presidential elections”. Reasons:

    No1.

NIGERIAN STUDENTS. Remember the person who abolished feeding in

tertiary institutions in 1984?. Buhari as a military Dictator then had

no agenda for Nigerian Students, neither does he and his rag tag

    coalition this time.

    Vote to protect our Students.

SAY NO TO BUHARI, SAY NO TO APC

    Nigeria First Project

    No2

NIGERIAN WOMEN. How many Women were in Buhari’s Cabinet as Military

Head of State? NONE. Buhari has no respect for the dignity of women and

regards them as insignificant in national development. That is why he

recklessly said recently that he will abolish the office of the First

Lady if he is elected. Women, who today are at the commanding heights of

Nigeria’s political economy will have no rallying point in a Buhari

    Government.

    Vote to protect our Women.

    No3

THE NIGERIAN PRESS. Do we want to risk the freedom of Expression we

currently enjoy?. Hear Gen Buhari’s vow in 1984 when asked about press

freedom ” I will tamper with that”. To match words with Action (after

all, Buhari claims to be a man of his words) he enacted Decree 20 and

jailed Journalists Nduka Irabor and Tunde Thompson. Many Nigerians were

detained without trial under his draconian Decree No 2. Can we afford

to go back to the dark ages?

The NIGERIAN POLITICAL CLASS. If you think that the current attempt to

whitewash General Buhari and give him a human face will make him abandon

his old habits, we will be in for a rude shock. To him, every

politician is a thief except himself. This kind of messianic delusion

has no place in contemporary Nigeria. Buhari looks at everyone with

contempt and prejudice. His iron fisted misrule lead to the premature

deaths of political leaders across the country. Let us save our emerging

leaders and protect them from a rampaging despot.

CIVIL SOCIETY. Buhari’s Government enacted laws with retroactive

effects. Nigerians were given punishments that were nonexistent in

previous laws at the time the offences were committed! How else can we

define gross violation of human rights? Buhari enacted and recklessly

applied Decree 2 otherwise known as Detention of Persons without trial

    Decree.

    He never condones dialogue.

CATTLE REARERS. To some Nigerians, General Buhari is a proud Fulani man

who will protect them when he gets to power! How wrong! Under General

Buhari, the obnoxious Jangali Tax system was introduced and this brought

untold hardships to Fulani Cattle Rearers and frustrated most of them

out of business. A good friend they say is better than a wicked brother.

The current effort to create grazing reserves for cattle Rearers must

be supported. Buhari will bring back Jangali.

INVESTORS/ BUSINESS COMMUNITY. General Buhari does not believe in the

principle of a private sector driven economy. He is still ensconced in

the worn out and obsolete practices of a state monopoly control of the

economy. All the gains of the current reforms which have made Nigeria

the biggest investment destination in Africa will be reversed.

Should we be led back to Egypt?

TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS. General Buhari as Military Head of State

undermined the revered and world famous Stools of the Emirate of Kano

and the Ooni of Ife when he unilaterally suspended the Great Alhaji Ado

Bayero and Oba Okunade Sijuwade from office for embarking on private

visits to the State of Israel. At the time they visited Israel, they

violated no laws. Let’s us preserve the dignity of our heritage.

THE LEGISLATURE AND THE JUDICIARY. General Buhari does not believe in

the concept of Separation of Powers. Being from a dictatorial

background, he lacks the temperament to engage in dialogue and tolerate

opposing views. That is how he influenced the dispensation of justice in

his regime. From his pronouncements and carriage, he has learnt nothing

and will attempt to weaken the other arms of government. SAY NO TO

    THE

NIGERIAN PEOPLE. General Buhari seems disconnected with the norms of

politics in his actions and his words. His immensely divisive persona is

manifest in his recent pronouncements. In an interview he granted to

weekly Trust recently, he referred to Former Presidents Olusegun

Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida as his “Enemies”. Nigerians deserve a

President who is a unifier, not one who has a penchant for collecting

enemies. A Nigeria President should NEVER HAVE AN ENEMY.

NIGERIAN PEOPLE. Buhari and his APC image launders have continued to

present themselves to Nigerians as people who are going to fight

corruption when voted into power –

    Buhari whose ADC, Major Ojokolo

escorted 53 suitcases money into this Nigeria in 1984 even when he, Buhari had

ordered the closure of the borders.

NIGERIAN PEOPLE. Toppling Shagari govt was the worst of Buhari sins. The

worst civilian govt is better than any military junta. A man who

truncated the Nigerian Second Republic and ushered Nigeria into 16 years

of Military draconian administration cannot turn around to benefit from

his own wrong. Buhari cannot eat his cake and have it.

Very soon Elechi senior will apologise and return to Jonathan and his son will be free again. Fani-Kayode and Sule Lamido of Jigawa are recent beneficiary of the doctrine of return-to-Jonathan-and-be-free-from-EFCC. Way we see the back of Jonathan in May.

    • warry

What of El rufai who was also freed by the courts like FFK. Are you insinuating that GEJ writes judgements for judges? Rather than playing politics with Govt agencies like EFCC,ICPC, I will suggest that their leaders be appointed by the NJC,so that we would stop playing politics with them.

Now we all know what fighting corruption means under president Jonathan. Anybody against me is corrupt, but if you are for me continue stealing as “stealing is not corruption” let’s vote for a change as that is only when the true fight of corruption will be seen in this country
