Jonathan to reappoint Obanikoro minister for conceding defeat in Lagos PDP governoship race

FILE PHOTO: Musiliu Obanikoro at the Lagos PDP governorship primaries rally

A former junior defence minister, Musiliu Obanikoro, will be heading back to Abuja as a top cabinet member as part of a deal personally brokered by President Goodluck Jonathan, for Mr. Obanikoro to discontinue his legal challenge of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primary result for Lagos State, PREMIUM TIMES can confirm.

Mr. Obanikoro was one of the biggest casualties of the PDP gubernatorial primaries, after resigning his ministerial position to vie for the party’s ticket in Lagos for the 2015 election.

He lost to Jimi Agbaje, a relatively less known candidate, who had the backing of the party’s most powerful leaders in Lagos.

Alongside Mr. Obanikoro, former ministers Emeka Wogu, Labaran Maku, Onyebuchi Chukwu, and Samuel Ortom, also lost their bids after leaving their posts to contest in their respective states.

Mr. Obanikoro rejected the Lagos results and filed a legal challenge against the declaration of Mr. Agbaje as winner, kicking off a row that has the potential to ruin any chances the party may have in snatching Lagos from All Progressives Congress, APC in 2015.

The logjam has finally been resolved amicably with the former minister accepting to withdraw his court case, at the same time fully support Mr. Agbaje as the PDP candidate, presidency sources have confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES.

On Friday morning, a relaxed and visibly pleased Mr. Obanikoro appeared on Channels Television programme, Sunrise, to explain why he agreed to drop his court case challenging the result.

Mr. Obanikoro said he acted in the interest of the party, and reflected on how the party needs a united front to defeat the APC and win Lagos after 15 years.

“But as I’ve said to you, we want to win Lagos. And the only way we can win Lagos is if we are united and people see us as being responsible and ready to provide leadership. For 16 years we’ve had a running battle between Lagos and the federal government,” Mr. Obanikoro said. “We want a government in Lagos that will engage the federal government constructively for the good of Lagosians.”

He denied agreeing to give up his legal challenge in return for a ministerial appointment, although he quickly added that he would be ready to serve if called upon to do so.

“Any time that you are called to come and serve the public, I think it makes sense to accept and do just that. I’m in politics, for goodness sake, for the good of our people, and if an opportunity presents itself for me to come and manage the affairs of men and women, why will I turn it down?” he asked.

PREMIUM TIMES can confirm that despite his denial, Mr. Obanikoro was given assurances from the highest office in the country that his personal interests would be well taken care of if he dropped his challenge.

A source within the presidency, well aware of the negotiations leading to Mr Obanikoro’s decision to back off, said the former subordinate minister was assured by the president that he would be appointed a senior minister in January when the Senate reconvenes.

“He reached a deal to be made a full minister in January and to continue holding his position if President Goodluck Jonathan gets re-elected in February,” our source said.

Our source also said that Mr. Obanikoro was promised a prominent role in the president’s re-election campaign effort in the South West, especially in Lagos.

“We don’t know what that role would be at the moment, but it is definitely not that of actively leading the campaign in the South West since he would have been appointed a minister then but he would definitely play a key role in the President Jonathan’s campaign,” the source added.

Part of the terms reached with Mr. Obanikoro was for him to have a say in who becomes Mr. Agbaje’s running mate, as well as the right to choose some of the commissioners in Mr. Agbaje cabinet should he emerge winner of the Lagos gubernatorial election.

Our source explained that the deal literally elevated Mr. Obanikoro from being a mere candidate to a power broker in Lagos and to some extent, southwest PDP.

“As you can see, he has come out of the deal looking stronger and Bode George and (Adeseye) Ogunlewe are the losers here after all,” the source said.

Bode George, a chieftain of the party, and Adeseye Ogunlewe, a former Minister of Works, are believed to be the power brokers behind the emergence of Mr. Agbaje as the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Lagos. However, they were not at the meetings where the deal was concretised, the source said.

During the Sunrise interview, Mr. Obanikoro allayed concerns that the absence of both men may jeopardise the deal in the future saying both men eventually got what they wanted and there was no reason why they should not accept the decision of the party.

“I believe Chief Bode George is on holiday somewhere outside Nigeria and I believe that if you look at the convergence there, you will see that all stakeholders particularly the aspirants who were aggrieved… Jimi Agbaje represents Ogunlewe and Bode George’s interest as far as I’m concerned and that is what that is all about and we have all now come together to embrace Jimi Agbaje,” he said.

When asked if the absence of Messrs George and Ogunlewe during the negotiation isn’t a sign of trouble, our source said the deal was initiated by the president himself and that there is no way both men, regardless of their influence would dare to overrule the president.

“The president is the national leader of the party and no one would want to scuttle a deal he personally brokered.”

Koro is smelly meat, no one wants to buy. I will vote Buhari but will vote Agbaje in Lagos.

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Olutola, you are making the same mistake Nigerians made when they “voted GEJ and not PDP”.

You can’t have one without the other.

      Na bad market!

      • djay

Pdp is not on ground in Lagos state, how many political offices do they occupy in Lagos state. Apart from the formidable structure Apc possess in Lagos state, its residence sees Apc as their own. Agbaje does not stand a chance.

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Djay, we shall keep an eye out for Koro becoming Minister of State for Defence again in January or a similar role.

          Don’t be surprised.

His ultimate value lie in his antecedent for thuggery.

SouthWest will need to up its game with that desperate mindset of the PDP.

          • djay

From discussions and conversations have had with people, everyone seems committed in getting rid of Pdp especially at the Presidential level which is the focus rite now. The effect of change 2015 will lead Pdp to its brutal demise. It will be so bad that that name Pdp must be changed for them to win future election.

          • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

No matter the present day white-wash and white sepuchring of the despot, I believe in what Tinubu told the U.S Embassy in 2003. That is on marble.

Not at all but then you cannot begrudge people who bask in day dreaming.

      • Okache

I really think Agbaje is not bad but he pegs his tent with the wrong crowd, so Buhari for president and Ambode for governor for me.

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

          Many thanks, bruv.

PDP is a cabal of rogues and its evil influence insidious.

        • djay

That’s my reason for saying Agbaje can’t win. He wants to use a party that’s not on ground in Lagos and expect to win. For 16 years now Pdp has not occupy political offices in Lagos while the have suffering a lot of defections where Apc have accommodated them.

    • tundemash

And whose policies will Agbaje be implementing ?

The PDP Lagos candidate, Jimi Agbaje, seems better-placed with a united PDP in Lagos.
He has an edge in name-recognition over his APC rival, Akinwunmi Ambode – a debutant.

really ? Was Fashola not debuntant in 2007 ?

      • S. Cole

        @ tundemash:

Correct point, but in 2007 the ACN party (now APC) was not self-inflicted by repulsive Islamism.
Nowadays APC party must give Christians conclusive arguments that Islam is good for all Christians.

        • tundemash

Can you explain how APC is now self-inflicted by repulsive Islamism and i hope you are not going to chorus the well known worn out PDP propaganda .

  • Realnigerian

The imbecile President is planning trouble for Lagos. PDP trio (Obanikoro, Bode George & Ogunlewe) will try and rig the lagos election. There will be chaos, riots and disaster next year if by the scheming of making Obanikoro as GEJ ‘s main foot General will make the last Ekiti State Election look like child’s play.

How many of paid online commentators on premium times have pvc’s or leave in nigeria? How many will vote come february? Enough of all this rantings and bad mouthing. The average voter does not come to apc times for news as they are faced with reality and as such can properly dissect facts from fiction(propaganda). Elections are not won on back pages of newspapers.

    • tundemash

  • Comfortkay

This is the same mistake the President always make, how can he bring a loser like koro again to be a minister, Is he the only one quality for this post?, first and foremost where did Obanikoro starts his political jamboree ? Well, should APC lose Lagos state, Bola Tinubu must take 100% of the blame as a daft politician.
      A thinking politician never plays tricks on religious lines to risk visceral backlash from the Christians;

    Dear Editor,

    Congratulations to Musiliu Obanikoro!

I will like to congratulate Alhaji Musiliu Obanikoro for standing up for his rights.
His decision to sue the Lagos PDP was a correct decision based on democracy.
He had over 45% of the votes at the PDP primary. That signifies his clout in Lagos.

The dispute which Alhaji Musiliu Obanikoro submitted to court is not vexatious or frivolous.
Although the court adjourned till January 4th, 2015, this out of court settlement is good.
Alhaji Musiliu Obanikoro can now pull together with the Lagos PDP and throw out the APC.
That is the fierce urgency of now. After 16 years of stealing, APC has become a bane on Lagos.

  • Son of Koro

Why Lagos State under Raji Fashola is complete Mess….

So far, Lagos’ debt has quintupled from $611 million dollars in 2007 to $3.7 billion by mid-2014.
Lagos’ debt went up in September by one billion dollars World Bank loan on the back of ₦87.5
billion loan in previous November when Raji Fashola issued bonds to borrow at 14.5% interest rate.

Raji Fashola took out ₦35 billion in cash from those bond receipts and handed it over to Bola Tinubu
    through the instrumentality of (a) Lekki Concession Company, (b) ARM company, and, (c) Hitech company;
all in a bogus “buy-back deal” of a supposed concession right on the 15-kilometre Lekki Expressway.

In total, a sum of ₦571, 594 billion was got as federal allocation from May 2007 under Raji Fashola.
Another ₦1.52 trillion was got in the same period as internally generated revenue.
But despite these oodles of cash, Lagos state has no enduring physical asset to show
for all of the $40 billion dollars Lagos state has received in total as revenues from May 1999 to date.

On May 21st, 2014, the Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Ayodeji Gbeleyi, confirmed
that Lagos state debts, as at May 2014, stood at N435 billion – including N275 billion in bonds –
equivalent to 2.7 billion United States dollars (as at that date). Now, discounting monthly
interest rates on the commercial portion of this debt, and reckoning 30% devaluation of the Naira,
last month, gross Lagos’ debt is now equal to all of the expected revenue allocation to Lagos state
in the next two and half years, and thus currently standing at $3.7 billion, without equivalent
benefits to Lagosians on the ground; to show for it – dollar for dollar.

his successor, become vice presidential candidate, or at worst, senator. Now, watch
Fashola slide into the abyss of political infecundity”.

you have no idea. But I will stay my tongue and let you see how things unfold

          • Citizen Power

Nothing else is going to unfold but these: Raji Fasola will face EFCC. Ambode will lose Lagos state.
General Buhari will lose all the 17 southern states (as usual). Raufu Aregbesola will then become APC Leader in the South-West, after Ajumobi shall have lost Oyo state, and, Amosun too shall have lost Ogun state.

I beg, i no know book O. What are “the two rounds inhabitants of a scrotum“>

          • Dalemo

Ol’ boy, but you get filthy mind sha, haba! What are you thinking about?
Ena Ofugara (above) wrote about two round inhabitants of a scrotum.
You have now changed it to “two rounds..” Haha! Who is doing rounds here?
If you want to do “rounds” i beg go to a brothel if that’s what’s worrying you most.

          • Dave

His dirty mind will kill him. No be only rounds.

Will Musliu Obanikoro ever make a difference in government? I am asking this question
because he has not made an impact despite all the political appointments he had before.
We cannot make public administration a chieftaincy title – like lawyers’ S.A.N bogus toga.

So for Obanikoro, it is not about principle or service to the people of Lagos State but about his personal interest? By this deal, he has done an incalculable damage to his political standing. Shame on him!

      @ TruthMaster,

When Jimi Agbaje takes oath of office on May 29, 2015, as the new governor of Lagos state,
the first task is to call in the fire service to put out the (literal) fires in the Lagos state treasury.
Remaking the PDP into a thinking party in Lagos state is down the line of urgent priorities.

PDP will not win Lagos. On what basis? A party that cannot put its house in order, a party that has messed up the national economy, a party that harbours the most corrupt people on earth should not be trusted to take over the nation’s largest economy. That will not happen.

I have been supporting Jonathan, from Today Jona is dead on arrival. He behave like a lunatic. He has disgraced all of us from South South.

PDP the real janjaweed party exposed: To reject sharia rule and boko haram, tell PDP governors and your masters backers practising sharia and backing boko haram to abolish it. GEJ northern backers and governors are sharia and boko haram advocates and founders. Sambo was a sharia governor(he is now second in command to GEJ and to whom GEJ referred to as boko haram dining and wining with him and yet cannot do anything), Shekarau was a sharia governor(He is today GEJ minister of education), Isa Yuguda is a sharia governor, Lamido is a sharia governor, Alli Modu was a sharia governor and founder of Boko haram, Settima of Katsina is a sharia governor, Aliu Babangida is a sharia governor, Gombe governor is a sharia governor, Adamu Muazu was a sharia governor(he is today GEJ imposed PDP chairman), Former PDP chairman(godfather of Jonathan) Alhaji Bamangar Tukur once famously said boko haram are fighting for their rights… Tell them to abolish sharia and boko haram, otherwise, you are f00ling yourselves.
