Buhari formally presents Osinbajo as APC presidential running mate

Buhari and Osinbajo

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari has formally presented Yemi Osinbajo, a professor of law and former attorney general and commissioner for Justice in Lagos state, as his running mate.

Making the presentation at the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja, Mr. Buhari said he sought advice from within and outside the party before making his choice.

He said Mr. Osinbajo was chosen because he was a man of “impeccable integrity”.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported how Mr. Buhari and the party settled for Mr. Osinbajo after days of meetings and consultations.

Mr. Osinbajo is an ally of a former governor of Lagos State, Ahmed Tinubu, who also pushed to be on the Buhari ticket.

Read our earlier report below:

After days of marathon meetings and horse-trading, the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress [APC], Muhammadu Buhari, has settled for a former Attorney General of Lagos, Yemi Osinbajo, as his running mate, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report.

A source close to Mr. Buhari said the APC agreed on Mr. Osinbajo Tuesday night as a concession to a former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu, who for days pushed himself forward for the slot.

Mr. Tinubu’s presumed candidature, according to party sources, was aggressively pushed by party chairman, Mr. Bisi Akande, and a cohort of south west governors, which did not sink well with many of his own long-time allies.

However an influential league of young party leaders, buoyed by two poll results that suggested South-west Yoruba would welcome a muslim-muslim ticket provided the vice presidential pick is competent, veered towards Babatunde Fashola, incumbent governor of Lagos State .

Mr. Tinubu’s first choice candidate however was Mr. Yemi Osinbajo, 55, a senior advocate of Nigeria, and University of Lagos professor of commercial law who helped rebuild the Lagos State judiciary as a national reference point.  Mr. Osinbajo studied law at the University of Lagos and the London School of Economics where he earned his doctorate degree.

He was a two-term attorney-general of the state, and connected to the powerful Awolowo political dynasty by marriage. He is married to the Late Chief Awolowo’s granddaughter.

Inside party sources, who do not want to be named, told PREMIUM TIMES in Lagos that once Mr. Buhari expressed open preference to have a running mate from the South West, Mr. Tinubu offered him a three-man list that had Mr. Osinbajo, himself [Tinubu], and Mr. Fashola.

The Tinubu gambit, according to his aides, was, however, a strategic ploy to reinforce Mr. Osinbajo’s candidature and dim Mr. Fashola’s chances since it seemed Mr. Buhari appeared to have a soft preference for him.

“In essence, Tinubu, while promoting claims to his own candidature, was actually playing a wedge politics to fend off opposition to Osinbajo,” one of his closest aides said in Abuja Tuesday night.

Mr. Osinbajo, a top cleric in the powerful Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, and the Chairman of the governing board of the Redeemer’s University, was thought to be a powerful choice to match the Jonathan ticket that has been wooing the Christian constituency through serial pilgrimages, and the subtle elevation of the status of the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria to a virtual presidential adviser’s position.

The ruling People’s Democratic Party [PDP] and many of its campaign slogans have sought to milk the deficit implicit in a possible Muslim-Muslim ticket, an arrangement that would have emerged in the event of either a Tinubu or Fashola candidature as running mates.

Party leaders, offering insight on the vice presidential pick, said “Yes, it has been agreed that Mr. Osinbajo should be the one, it was finally agreed last night. There is going to be a press conference to present him today.

Professor Osinbajo, who is also the resident minister at the Olive Tree parish of the Redeemed Church on Banana island of Lagos State, is one of the closest aides to Church’s General Overseer and revered clergyman, Enoch Adeboye. He has at various times been Master of Ceremony at the church’s Holy Ghost Convention and Congresses usually held at its Camp Ground along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

By the choice of Mr. Osinbajo, Mr. Buhari is making history to run with another cleric and lawyer. Tunde Bakare, the iconoclastic cleric who ministers at the Latter Rain Assembly was his running mate in the 2011 presidential election. Mr. Bakare also trained as a lawyer who worked in the law offices of the late Gani Fawehinmi and the late Rotimi Williams.

Nevertheless, before settling for Mr. Osinbajo, the leadership of the APC had first resolved either Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State or Adams Oshiomhole of Edo in the South-South geo-political zone by narrowing its search to the South West region.

In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010, political parties have up till Thursday to submit names of their presidential and vice presidential candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC].
The National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, had told journalists on Tuesday that the party would announce its presidential running mate today in keeping with the nation’s electoral law.

The North and West in their demented reasoning believe that governance of Nigeria belongs to them. Therefore, at the height of Niger Delta’s resistance to usurpation of its resources and decimation of its ecosystem, the North & West in their characteristic cunning and clandestine fashion, convinced Great Jonathan to run on the same ticket with sterile North. He agreed with all good sense of purpose, believing that salvaging the corporate existence of Nigeria was paramount.

However, the immediate events before, during and after the demise of Musa Yaradua is what we all know. It had become clear that the people of the South South were actually viewed, in the words of Soyinka, as a mere appendage to Power. But is that what about 50million peoples of the South South are? That they cannot aspire to any position in this land without such unholy alliance and vicious resistance as we have seen via Terrorist attacks emanating from morbid resentment of Jonathan’s origin?

I was once Proudly Nigerian, but not anymore. All my pride in being Nigerian ceased when Jonathan could not explain the whereabouts of his Boss in far away New York. In response to a CNN reporter’s question, Jonathan declared: “I have neither seen nor heard from him in 4months.”. Like I have said here before, I pitied Jonathan and my eyes were almost filled with tears but for the fact that in my Niger Delta, men don’t cry.
…Now, imagine you being unable to speak or visit your bedridden Boss (With whom you have no quarrel) …all bcos you are from a region that must not be President. But you want the SS&SE resources. Prepare for the fiercest of confrontations in human history. Time to decide who owns Nigeria is here.

    • Guymanillow

Does one needs to respond to fools like you? I think the answer is NO…

      • Unchained

Is there sense in his comment? A simpleton might not see the sense in his structured facts. In any case, only sensible responses should be given.

        • Guymanillow

What sense is in what you wrote here? None. I bet you are one of the paid rats, and trust me, I swear with God that created me, no matter what you are making from these dirty jobs you do, my one month salary is more than what you make annually. That is to tell you how comfortable I am.

You think Dubai, America, UK and other best countries of the world was created like that by God? You must be living in fools paradise.

    • Amir

After enjoying your amnesty allowance, you are still eager to insult the rest of us with your gibberish. Are you jittery or nervous? Has it downed on you that the party is over? For six years you and your fellow online insurgents refused to see power as belonging to the people. Rubbish, ruuubishh!

      • _Proudly Niger Deltan

…and after you lost Ilorin and the Oba’s throne in 1779, your lives changed forever. To play second fiddle has become the norm…all it took Bokohari was a simple threat of blood on the streets and within weeks, the Gbana major was already in Kaduna in that his famous photograph of prostration before the vampire aspirant. Just wait and see. February is days away…and we shall know who owns Nigeria

        • tundemash

When you voted OBJ (Yoruba) and Atiku(North) in 1999, were you not playing 2nd fiddle then ? Why did you not vote the igbo man Eme Ezouke in 1999 and Okadigbo in 2007 as V.P. then ?

Go lick your wounds quietly at your amnesty camp. Any miscreant will be hanged higher than Saro Wiwia.

          • _Proudly Niger Deltan

Who voted? after they killed MKO & Wife and drove 2/3 of your population into exile. You think we don’t know the story? aboki just left you alone temporarily…Have they vacated the Oba’s throne?

          • Conscienceman

answer his question on usurpation of the Oba’s throne in Ilorin. When is the Emir vacating the throne?

        • New Nigerian

God owns Nigeria…the rest of us are inhabitants for a time…like OBJ says “don’t leave God out of your calculations”

    • malam amadi

name of resources, after the 50k of amnesty what else did you enjoy from? tompolo dey collect billions and you a cook in hausa man senator house for borno you are talking of resources? what resources kitchen knife and yam na dem be your resources.

    • tundemash

Cl0wn …. how many votes did you give Ojukwu when he contested ?
How many votes did you give Buhari when he has Igbo V.P.s in 1999 and 2007…… did you stlll not choose to vote for the Yoruba (OBJ) and North( Atiku) then.

    • Lenz

Elections will come and go and perhaps APC will win and perhaps not. But whatever happens, neither you nor your kind “owns” Nigeria. Nigeria is owned by Nigerians — ALL of them.

      • Tunsj

The corrupt politicians think that they own Nigeria and they can steal as much as possible and nothing will happen to them.

    • Amir

The die is cast. When the born to hate SS voted for Obasanjo and rejected Ekwueme, voted for YarAdua and rejected Ojukwu, little did the fools realise that the chicken will come home to roost one day. It is pay back time for the Igbos against these dangerous neighbours who have always supported the North. They prefered Shagari to Azikiwe, Obasanjo to Ekwueme, YarAdua to Ojukwu. They refused to identify with APGA prefering northern PDP. Since 1960 ungrateful SS have always sabotaged the East and campaigned against employing Igbos in Ijaw areas. What a selfish and lawless people? Nigeria is for all. We need change and justice for all, not ethnic bigotry.

    • New Nigerian

Jonathan have been ruling for the past 6 years – and you are still stuck in the moments before his presidency – all you write have been washed away by Jonathan being the President and Commander-in-chief for the past 5.5 years…wake up and smell the roses!

  • Xman

This is the best choice made by APC, for those clamoring for a Muslim/Christian ticket, no more excuse, for those claiming APC is a Muslim party, ur lies are exposed, and if I am ask, if APC is a Muslim Party, is PDP a Christian party? And if we want to talk of religious team, I think I’d give it to Buhari and Osinbajo, because Buhari is an epitome of Ideal Islam, and Osinbajo is an epitome of Christianity. But can we say this of GEJ, that he is an example of Christianity? Can we also say Sambo is an example of Islam? I don’t so.

PDP has ruled for close to a decade, do we have power after spending billions of dollars? Are our schools ok enough for the elites to send their wards there? Is our healthcare better now? What about our economy? Our security nko? PDP not only GEJ has failed us, it is high time we tried something else, APC, progress and change.

    • Tunsj

Xman, I agree. But I bet you that they will still have plenty of things to complain about.

  • Tamuno Briggs

Prof of Law indeed! Where and when did he get a PhD? Where are his publications? Being a SAN is not equal to Prof. Where did he Lecture? Which University did he give lecture? Was in in Govt offices where he has been since 1990?

U want to use Prof title to boost this unknown Oloye. Yoruba love to praise their own. Great Jona has been a an active Scholar, Researcher and if you like, publisher. Yet you don’t give him his respect…and now this clown is praised. Nonsense.

    • malam amadi

      S. I. UNIT OF NONSENSE IS JONATHAN EBELE GULDER.

    • Kayode A. Esquire

      @ Briggs:

HOW ABACHA’S CASE DISGRACED YEMI OSINBAJO

What is the meaning of S.A.N to start with? Those i have met bearing that title are very dull.
I am yet to meet any intelligent person bearing S.A.N. I am sad about this – not one single person.
Folks now say we should rush and vote because this Yemi Osinbajo is a Professor of Evidence Law.

What nonsense! Where is the proof of the pudding? Was he not the lawyer on Abacha’s son’s case?
Of course, he was the one. So, what happened? The Court threw out his case for incompetent evidence!
So they should tell us the real value of a Professor of Evidence Law, since the proof of it is not obvious.

    • Prof Udeme Bassey

You are correct. How did he become a Prof? Which University awarded the Prof? PT should be very careful. Dont bamboozle us with rubbish. Some of us here on this forum are retired Professors and we would not condone such misinformation in our domain.

      • tundemash

you are a prof and yet you reason like a tout. Did you question your Port harcourt degree Dumbo who claimed corruption is mere stealing ?
Something is wrong down …… i don’t know if it is the contaminated water or you guys were fed with expired breast milk growing up but certainly something is wrong !

        • Lenz

Clearly, the dolt Prof Udeme Bassey is not a Prof.. If he were he would not flaunt rank stupidity with such glee. He would hide it…

      • DanielOsazuwa

Go hug a transformer because we are going to see the back of the most incompetent, clueless, misfit and ogogoroish Jonathan come 2015. Get use to it because it’s already cast on “rock”.

        • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

It is pertinent to mention that Osibanjo is very very close to Tinubu who is allegedly on the backfoot due to allegations of past drug dealing and money laundering bedevilling and hunting him down.
Osibanjo is just an extension of the Tinubu looting network……NIGERIANS CANNOT BE DECEIVED !!

          • MM

APC choice is of no concern to PDP apologist. Please leave APC alone and face your PDP. Haba!

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

We are all Nigerians……is that not absolutely right ?

          • MM

We are Nigerians agreed but ypu are not a supporter of APC. So face your party PDP and give them advices on how to make 2015 election a success for them and not focus on what decision the opposition is taking.

          • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

You see, democracy is such a beautiful thing…..If the zealots and extremists in the APC are allowed to unleash their brand of draconian bigotry on the country we will all lose.Your APC will be defeated,if I were you I would really reconsider the blind support to Tinubu’s looting network which of course Osibanjo represents !!

          • MM

See Tawanda or what do you call yourself. Please say that to your PDP supporters. There is no blackmail you can pose that will make me change my support for APC. Pls don’t comment on things you don’t know. Yemi Osibajo is one of the best legal brains in this country. Go to GOOGLE SCHOLAR and search for his name,so that you can appreciate his intellectual worth.

    • Igweee!!!

You will feel embarrassed if you know how ignorant your questions are!

As a law student that was taught Evidence by one of the nest authorities in Evidence, I lost count of how many times that my own teacher referred to Osibanjo as an authority on the issues in the course. If you don’t know someone, wait and find out with humility and curiosity. Don’t just launch yourself into empty abuse and ridicule which, leaves you looking ridiculous.

If Nigeria has a Senior Advocate that deserves to be called a Senior Advocate, Osibanjo is certainly one of them. By all standards, he merits his professorial title/position too.

  • Amir

Great Jona indeed. The Bayelsa jesus of our time! International Researcher and publisher. Obama and Mandela combined. No title is greater than former president of Nigeria from 2015. He can enjoy his pension from a generous country that pardons the likes of Alams and protects wanted drug peddlers.

  • Uturu Mgbagbu

“Impeccable integrity” of a man who spearheaded Thiefnubu’s looting of Lagos States sounds to me like the integrity of Bokohari who handed over all PTF contracts to his relative who ran a consultancy that curiously has the name APC. What a weak, indecisive, coupist, murderous, wicked illiterate whose economic policy as military head of state was trade by barter.

    • Okey

All media hype. Fashola even has a little vertebrate than this man who, when asijaju says “jump”, he would ask. “How high, sir ?” If you say a Christian and pastor, we can accept that from a combination involving a Tunde Bakare or any other person else, not these political pastors. ” A redeem “pastor” that covered asiwaju of apc’s milking of Lagos to dry bone and never for a second voiced a disavowal can be anything but never a Christian pastor.

      • glo

Sorry loser, your dumbo, Jonathan left you morons with nothing tangible to make his case, thus you’re all grasping at straws. A win for Buhari, is a win for the masses.

    THE RAJI FASHOLA EXAMPLE

All these titles of S.A.N and Professor are up for sale in Nigeria – no merits to them again.
See now. Alhaji Raji Fashola was working in the corridor of Bola Tinubu’s office throughout.
He was not going to any court. He was not lecturing in any university. But what happened?
We just heard that Raji Fashola has become S.A.N by working as admin officer to Bola Tinubu.

and there is no alternative to them as it is. Nigerians appear not to be against stealing
and corruption but only against how long you stay stealing and being corrupt.
Don’t ever expect those in public office to fight corruption on these facts.”

          ….…..Governor Rotimi Amaechi

          • Benicio

Truer words haven’t been spoken….. We as Nigerians have failed the institution. Leadership starts from the bottom. And your average Nigerian does not know this, you are only as strong as the people you lead. When the masses don’t know better. The corrupt elites can pull a wool over their face in disguise of religion and cultural sentiment.

        • Maria

He expressed bitterness… not me. Calling someone an illiterate is no expression of bitterness… it is a way to tell him his level of understanding of letters. So, Mr translator…I guess you too are an illiterate, lol!

I usually let things go but i’m baffled…. he said “Fashola is an illiterate” or you came to that conclusion by yourself…..

          • Benicio

            sup with the insults?
You can’t have a conversation without being insulting even when you disagree. I hope this is just an internet thing for you.

  • djay

Gej led Pdp party introduced ethnicity and religion into our polity now Tinubu and Apc have now beat them to their own game. Very soon we shall start seeing propaganda and lies about Osibanjo.

  • Lanre

I wish Nigerians the best. Even though I will not be voting at the National Level (Personal decision taken since the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections), this ticket is weak. This is a vote for Buhari and I believe there are questions that he must answer, particularly from his role during the ignominous Abacha era. Many Yorubas including the winner of the June 12, 1993 elections were killed. Buhari never said a word. At a time when clear leadership is needed (particularly on the issue of
religion), Buhari shows weakness. Osibajo is an unknown quantity. He has never won an election. What makes him sellable. His religion? His Ethnicity? What of Senator Mamora who has a greater brand name? Osibajo appearing at this announcement not wearing Traditional Yoruba garb shows the naivety of this academic. In conclusion, Buhari will lose the next elections because Yorubas are not religious fanatics and will not turn out en-masse to vote for Osibajo. APC can depend on the votes of the NW and parts of NE and Jonathan can depend on SS/SE/NC votes. We Yorubas need to think deep and know what we want. The rest of the world is leaving us (Yorubas) behind.

Stop using yoruba name to conceal your identity. We know who you are

Since u are not voting, crawl back into the whole u came from and stop fouling the air !

      • Benicio

if you must use it use it right. “…..Hole you came from”

    • glo

Judging from the tone of your comment, you would rather have Jonathan stay on as president to continue the fleecing of Nigeria. For that I say: MAY YOUR BUSINESS MANAGER, MANAGE YOUR BUSINESS THE WAY GOODLUCK HAVE BEEN MANAGING NIGERIA, in Jesus name! Amen, Amen, and Amen!

Buari all the way. I remember in 1999, PDP promised to fix power sector, in fact this was used as their campaign focal point. 16 years in power, the same PDP still using the same slogan. Nigerians are not fools anymore. 16 years are enough to put a nation on the path of greatness. Instead, Nigeria has retrogressed under this fraudulent party. Buari is the man, enough of PDP fraud.

    PROFESSOR OF EVIDENCE LAW, REALLY?

Can’t be worse than Dr Jonathan Goodlock

    • glo

He is still better than your dumbo, Jonathan.

    • Akindiose santos

You talk illiteracy. You are very myopic in your analysis. What has his losing a case got to do with his choice as a running mate ? So whoever loses a case as a lawyer is not competent to hold a political post. You are very shallow in thinking. Cases are lost on so many factors of which part of it is technical and political.

  • Preco01

I see a lot of people sacrificing personal ambition to help salvage Nigeria. I see a very thorough primary process leading to the emergence of Buhari and a dedicated internal negotiation process leading to the choice of Yemi Osinbajo. May God reward all those whose sacrifice produce this dynamic winning team. God bless you all, God bless the federal republic of Nigeria

  • Olutola

He was shoeless, we gave him shoes, then he began to cut the legs of Nigerians. Now we are taking back our shoes and will probably give him short nickers with short sleeve top (I hope you all know where they wear that as uniform with matric number). I am sure his BP had risen! You gave us sleepless nights without power supply, let us see how you will sleep this night!

  • Proudly Niger Deltan

Na who give bros Professor? Which University? Shooo! This simple question dey difficult for you? He could have been an HOD in UNILAG…Does he have a PhD? Which University did he complete his PhD? or is LLM from London = PhD in Nigeria? Someone should answer quick b4 I slap somebody for teeth. Nonsense!.

…Na so the Gbana major forge result full everywhere, then begin dey deceive people up & down. Oluwole people!

    • AuntySocial

Don’t talk ignorant, obviously you have no knowledge of the academia. A professor should have at least a Master’s degree. Professorship chairs are conferred based on outstanding academic writings and relevant practice of proposed theories over time.

  • G.Talabi

APC should start thinking of the 2019 election. With its choice of running mate APC has lost momentum.
Planning ahead the central cause of this self-inflicted defeat is Bola Ahmed Tinubu who must be got rid of.
Tinubu should be released to go elsewhere to form his preferred monarchical political party of Muslims only.

    • Uka

Yes O. APC must then agree on Igbo president.

      • Nwachukwu

Rochas Okorocha must be voted the APC presidential candidate in 2019. We are not fools.

  • MushinSpeaks

I believe elections should be about competence and not tribe. If likes of GMB/Osibajo cant convince you enough, then stick with the present but remember, millions of Nigerians are earnesly seeking for change

In a perfect world yes…. But everything about our great Nation defies logic, no rhyme or reason to anything, unique system that makes you wonder how anything gets done.
