Boko Haram: Jonathan set to extend emergency rule in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan is set to extend emergency rule that has been in place in the troubled North-East states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

The president will be asking the National Assembly for an approval after the National Defence Council on Monday approved the extension, Attorney General, Mohammed Adoke, said.

The council, chaired by the president, with the vice president and security chiefs as members, has the power to advise the president on security matters affecting Nigeria.

Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States have remained the hotbed of Boko Haram insurgency which has killed more than 13,000 and displaced hundreds of thousands since 2009.

If approved by the lawmakers, the emergency rule will be in its fourth phase following two previous extensions.
The emergency rule was first declared on May 14, 2013 by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Under the constitution, each phase of emergency runs for six months. The third round of emergency rule expires on Thursday.

“The council reviewed the issue of the state of emergency and the government will be requesting the National Assembly to extend the emergency rule. It will go in immediately,” Mr. Adoke said.

Mr. Jonathan chaired Monday’s meeting. The meeting was also attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo service chiefs, the National Security Adviser and the Inspector General of Police.

Others in attendance were the Minister of Defence, Aliyu Guasu, and the Minister of Interior, Mr. Aba Moro and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim.

Who is declaring state of emergency in the north? Boko haram of the government of Nigeria? I never would have believed that the Nigeria Army would be so weak that it cannot defeat some miscreants who call themselves Boko haram. All we hear are excuses why the Army is losing and Boko haram gaining more land. The Army and a wide segment of the population are beginning to believe the excuses to conceal the shame of the humiliation inflicted by Boko haram. We can blame Gusau, we can blame the governors of the three states in the north east, we can really continue the blame until everyone has received a good share of blame. But the shame of the defeat remains with the government and the military. No amount of blame can take away the shame.

GEJ to hell with your useless state of emergency that cannot contain your boys. only last weak brave hunters liberated Mubi and Maiha from your boys, what your military fail to achieve but always on the run like antelope that see lion. you are unhappy about that brave achievement, you when ahead and arrested the head hunter and disband them, which resulted in the regrouping of your boys to retake Mubi and Maiha again, they even vow to invade Yola and set free their leader captured by the hunters from Mubi. By the grace of God the evil you are planting will surely consume you.
