Tambuwal: My fate as House Speaker in God’s hand

The embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Saturday said his fate as Speaker of Nigeria’s second lawmaking chamber is in the hands of God.

He also said his colleagues, who elected him Speaker, rather than anyone else, would determine whether he should continue to lead them or not.

Since defecting from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] to the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC] on October 28, the PDP and the Nigeria police have been plotting to oust him from his position as Speaker.

While the PDP plotted to reconvene the House from its current adjournment without Mr. Tambuwal’s consent, the police withdrew his security aides, saying since he defected from the party on whose platform he was elected into the lower legislative chamber, he had ceased to be Speaker.

On November 3, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja granted an injunction stopping lawmakers of the PDP from reconvening the House of Representatives from recess.

Ruling on a case brought by APC lawmakers in the House, who alleged that PDP lawmakers were planning to reconvene the House in defiance of its leadership, Justice Ahmed Ramat Muhammed ordered PDP legislators not to take a decision to reconvene the House at least until November 7 when the case would be heard.

When the case came up for hearing on November 7, the judge directed parties in the case to maintain the status quo until November 17, the next hearing date.

The court gave the order as the Federal Government, through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, and the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, pledged not to do anything that would undermine the Office of the Speaker.

But speaking to journalists on Saturday, Mr. Tambuwal said he had left the matter of his remaining in office or otherwise in the hands of God and his colleagues.

“My fate in the National Assembly is in the hands of God and my members of the House of Representative insha Allah, “ the speaker told reporters shortly after the North-West zonal meeting of the APC on Saturday in Kaduna.

He declined to answer further questions including that which sought to know his chances against other aspirants in the APC vying for the position of governor in his native Sokoto State.

    THE END OF AMINU TAMBUWAL

    No, no, no. Alhaji Tambuwal,

Don’t be so optimistic. As at today you are no longer a member of the House of Representatives.
You made the daft move to defect without having evidence of a division in PDP. All your fault, sir!
You need to look for cogent evidence of division in the PDP before you can be allowed in the chambers.
It is after you get that provable evidence that you will then show how APC party can plausibly
hold the post of MINORITY HOUSE LEADER and SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, as you daftly propose,
without provoking laughter in much-better educated Nigerians who know better than the ersatz professors
talking rubbish in Nigerian newspapers that your defection is in order and does not deprive you Speakership.
Now, in what i laid out here in a nutshell, God has nothing to do with your stupidity to leap before you thought.

    • Omatsola

But wait O. I read in Punch newspaper or so, just a few days ago, all the grammaticals by Professor Itse Sagay.
So are you saying that he too doesn’t know what he is saying; or, what? Na wa O. Nigeria is finished in that case.

  • israel amulum

As it stands.the issue is not even speakers hip,the issue is that tambuwal is no longer a member of the house.you have to be a member of a club b4 you aspire for chairmanship

  • Frank Bassey

What is all this NONSENSE about. A man who occupied No. 4 Citizen’s seat for almost 4 years is now realizing that his place in the house is in God’s hands. In whose hands has it been all these years? What is all this theatrical display of arrogance about?

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Tambuwal is holding the nation to ransom and has scuttled legislative activities because he intends to be speaker from a minority party after defecting with the peoples mandate………….and he has the audacity to involve “God” in his wicked act of blackmail?
Tambuwal is digging his political grave and he knows it !!

  • GodwinEdwards

you small hausa man from sokoto, you think you can insult and embarass the sensitivity and rationality of true reasonable and unbiased educated Nigerians through your selfish ambitions without taking cognisance of the feelings ot the generality of larger community you are representing as speaker….its a big shame you have not resigned by now….l wonder how the PDP majortiy in the house would tolerate a man of your kind..

  • Pet

This man must be a damn illiterate. How could he not know that in a democratic government, that the house speaker comes from the party with the majority in the house. If you defect to the minority party, how in hell would you even habour the thought of continuing in the house as the speaker. Ridiculous! Did this Tambuwal attend a high school at all. He might be using a fake high school certificate.

    • Sangbafo

Did we run an un-democratic govt during thelast dispensation when Ume Ezeoke from NPP was the speaker when the majority party was NPN-? I am jut asking. Why? IGNORANCE, DELIBERATE AMNESIA AND A-HISTORICAL ATTITUDE TO ISSUES AND DISCOURSE is part of the way PDP , President Jonathan and his handlers spread political disease which us close to political Ebola. Finally, parties DO NOT elect house speaker. Members of the house do. This was why Ume Ezeoke was the speaker then even when he did not come from so-called “majority” party. Think this is is not some ogogoro or village apetshi talk

      • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Stop your ignorance !! Edwin Ume-Ezeoke was speaker due to an accord between the NPP and NPN as it were. The two parties had an agreement to co-operate in many areas of political interest which included voting in matters of mutual interest as one and sharing positions in order to facilitate legislation and avoid grid-lock in the passing of bills.
Your example was out of ignorance and I find it ridiculous for you to have addressed another as “ignorant” !!

        • Sangbafo

This is for you “Pastor”. Reno Omokri. Please read and think before rushing to reply. This is not your stuff-i.e thinking is not your strength. So please endeavor to consult your party -PDP before rushing to reply-Okay? Here it is.pet na Tawanda incommunicado na Wendel Reno Omokri, na the truth na
redeem na otile na oleku again na Reno Omokri , since you are the same
person writing garbage under different names, I will respond to you in a
single mail. So I say Shut your ogoro and apeteshi smelling mouth. We
are talking LAW here ad not same drawl in your ogogoro shed in the
creeks. Show your readers where in the Nigerian constitution where that
‘accord” you referred to in the most un-intelligent manner is written.
I can see that you are brainless. Show me now ogogoro man. I think you
are drunk, and I will punch you harder in your stupor until you wake up
from your drunkingess. Now remember this? This is a related issue about
“accord” and “agreement”-okay Ogogoro man. Your Ijaw president-Goodluck
Jonathan- was reported to have had an agreement with his “Christian”
PDP party that he will only run one term. I think that :”Christians”
(Ijaw president claims to be “Christian” a la Pastor Oritsejafor!) are
supposed to stand by what they agree on. Right? It is about “the truth’
which Christians must be witness of-right? But what did your Ijaw
President say? You his campaigners and himself-Goodluck Jonathan
challenged his PDP people on the agreement he was part of on two
grounds thus :(i) you all plus Ijaw president told your fellow PDP
peopls “show me where the agreement that Goodluck Jonathan will run for
one term was written?” You said that didnt you in order to say there was
no agreement or that it does not have legality under the law.? (ii) You
ogogoro heads enthusiastically asked your fellow PDP people “even if
there is an agreement, where in the Nigerian constitution backs such
agreement?” See ? You and your PDP ARE DUBIOUS. So UNDER THE LAW Ume
Ezeoke UNDER THE LAW AND IN THE EYES OF THE LAW WAS ELECTED SPEAKER BY
MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE. This is what IS KNOWN TO THE LAW. Ogogoro
man-listen to me-I go laf tire as I punch your apeteshi brain and mind. .
You and your Ijaw President Goodluck Jonathan are morally dubious and
fraudulent. Your Ijaw president and his campaigners are the greatest
blight and moral fraud ever in the history of Nigeria. Answer me now. I
dey here. Yu hear. Show where that your accord was written? Show me the
Nigerian law that bind that “accord”. Dis laf dey sweet person! I want you to consult with your Ijaw man Presidency-Goodluck Jonathan-the one that sent you before you open your mouth to write another garbage.

          • MrFesh

Respond to the facts he slapped you with. Stop being pretty. You bandy won’t info and still phool around.

          • Sangbafo

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah I don win. E pain you well well well. “Pastor” Reno Omokri characteristic of you, after I defeated you FLATLY you resurrected with another name which we know anyway. So Reno Omokri na MrFesh na otile na oleku na Tawandah incommunicado na pet PLEASE SHOW NIGERIANS WHERE IN THE NIGERIAN CONSTITUTION THE SO-CALLED “ACCORD” YOU TALKED ABOUT IS SUPPORTED BY NIGERIAN LAW. That is a simple question, do not run away!!! When a brainless man also gets drunk with Ogogoro, the result is garbage of the worst order. Answer my question Pastor Omokri

          • austine007

Also, tell us in Nigeria where “zoning” is constitutional?

          • austine007

So what is wrong with an Ijaw man being PRESIDENT? So, nah Northerner naim PRESIDENCY sweet for im mouth? You have failed in your myopic analysis… No more power to the north. I don’t like Jonathan but the NORTH will not smell power again!

We all become lawyers and legal giants when our very own Ox is being gored! Abeg, go siddon for dirty jare! You for don give instruction to the IG make him restore Tambuwal’s retinue of POLICE!
By now I was expecting you to redeploy some support from Bokostan’s military since Nigeria’s military are “Rag-tag”…

    • Otile

Excuse him, he went ABU. By treachery he stole the speaker-ship from the South West. Corruption is no good.

    • austine007

Can’t you see the way the South-West are singing his praise through ALMIGHTY TINUBU for stealing the “speakership” from them… Nonsense! You think say, Yoruba people give a damn about Tinubu’s APC!

  • Darlington Mudiaga Atumu

This man has already determined his fate…PDP did not have a hand in it…

  • bikky

Of course you are still the speaker of Nigeria House of the Representatives until House says NO,I don’t know what concern PDP or Nigeria Police on a Pure legislative issue. Instead of IG Aba and PDP to seat down and seek for ways to resolve enormous Economics and Securities challenges that are facing Nigeria as a nation they took-up Tambuwal issue as if that is the solution we need now, In fact this nation is in Doom with these type of leaders we are parading. Oh God Nigeria Needs your Total Liberation.

    • Nwa Aba {Biafran}

      you mean the former speaker?

    • austine007

Are you saying they (PDP and Nigerian Police) should go and takeover “Bokostan”?

  • Teddy

Having gone through some of the comments posted on Tambuwal issue by different people, I feel ashamed and amused by the level of reasoning and thinking of these individuals. May be I should remind them of the case of Ondo defectors, where almost the entire members of the State House of Assembly including the Speaker defected from the then ruling party, LP, a party on which platform they contested and won election into the house to PDP – heaven had since not fallen and the Speaker’s security details were not withdrawn. The mention of the State Governor’s defection to the ruling party, PDP is an over emphasis. The question here is, why is it that when defection is in PDP’s favor, it is normal, but when it is from PDP to the opposition, they ( PDP) cry foul. Are they saying we operate 2 different laws in Nigeria? One for PDP and the other for the rest. Too bad. They should get matured.

    • austine007

My father always gives me a proverb and it says, “If a corpse doesn’t belong to you, it is seen as nothing but a log of wood; But when the corpse is your very own father/mother you want the whole world to show you pity…”

  • Truthometer

Sure. Your fate is not in the hands of Dumbo and his criminal enterprises called political party, PDP. You shall remain the Speaker of the house until your colleagues in the House says otherwise, as prescribed by the House rules and regulations. It’s time to let them know that their season of impunity, lawlessness and shredding of the constitution is over.

    • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria vis a vis cross-carpeting by elected legislators takes precedence over whatever rules those legislators set for themselves .
Tambuwal is lawless,he has behaved irresponsibly by trying to run the house from a minority party.

      • austine007

He has the backing of TINUBU, AMAECHI, ROCHAS, NGIGE and Co.
After 2015 elections we shall see if EFCC is still functional… Abuse me if you like but EFCC will be unleashed in 2015 and we shall know how clean APC is… Since PDP is full of thieves, idiots, animals, DUMBOS and shit!

    • austine007

So, Tinubu’s APC now represents JUSTICE, TRUTH, FAIRNESS and EQUALITY? So, why did those who defected from APC say there are no internal democracy in APC? Are you not a hypocrite? Are you seeing what is happening in Lagos State house of Assembly? I hope you know say PDP is not in control there? Nah here I dey ooo!

  • MrFesh

It’s only in Nigeria that a minority party wants to head a House of representatives. And this clown is calling God. Hypocrites. If he had any drop off honour he woulda designed first. This is about common sense not PDP or APC.

    • Richard

If you go back to your history books, you will definitely know that during Shagari’s regime the NPN as a party had more members in the House of Representatives followed by UPN. The Speaker of the House then was Umeh Ezeoke from NPP who was elected Speaker through the alliance of the opposition parties. He was there for four years without any acrimony. The constitution does not indicate that the Speaker must be produced by the party in majority . The Speaker is always elected by the members of the House and not a political party.

      • MrFesh

Get your facts right. The opposition together formed a majority which brought about that appointment. That’s what happens when the majority party cannot muster the required number of votes. It’s called a coalition.

      • austine007

My father always gives me a proverb and it says, “If a corpse doesn’t belong to you, it is seen as nothing but a log of wood; But when the corpse is your very own father/mother you want the whole world to show you pity…” When our own interest is threatened we become all knowing in the law, history, constitution and legal provisions of Nigeria; we then we seek truth, justice and fairness… Well, na siddon I jus siddon dey look…

  • Garden-City Boy

Is he now abandoning allah for God? View awusa man from any perspective, you still find an animal that is quite amazing. Lord have mercy!!!!

  • austine007

Tambuwal! Tambuwal!! Tambuwal!!! All of us are also in God’s hand. No thanks to Jonathan’s weakness and the State of “Bokostan”…

  • Wale Ade

I will not comment on the important matter of whether or not the Speaker should remain the Speaker – having left a party through which he was elected to join another party, because regardless of what I, or anyone thinks about the legality of whether or not he should remain, or even what the constitution prescribes in matters such as this, it is shameful that politicians, regardless of party affiliations seemingly make up the law as they go along. It is only in Nigeria that a police officer can take it upon himself to withdraw the security detail of the Speaker!
Politics in Nigeria’s is seemingly like a none scripted Nollywood movie. Otherwise, where else in the civilised world do canditates pay so much for Nomination forms to contest for an election, is it therefore surprising that politicians then want to recoup their costs and much more when they get into power.
Nigeria is always portrayed on the world scene negatively, otherwise we will not be recycling leaders of the past in ‘new guises’. No politician including the president is ever held to account for deeds carried out in office. Jonathan is in my view the worst perfoming president in recent times, unfortunately there is no credible alternative in any party. How dare him even consider contesting given his apparent failures!
It is unbelievable how many millions of Naira Nigeria pays past Presidents/Head of State when the Army is so ill equipped to defend the country.
When will this apparent misplace of priority in the way this country is managed be put right, possibly not in the next couple of generations.

    • Otile

Omo, think right. A strong Muslim man joins your family for dinner and prayers, towards the end of the meal the guest announces that he is leaving with your mother, that your father should look for another woman to take care of the family. On his way out he drags your mom along with, and your father calls the police on him. Would you advise your father to be patient, that in a few weeks he will bring your mother back, and everything would be fine?

  • Otile

By a treacherous fiat which may have involved palm-greasing, Honorable Mulikat was short-changed. Now see the embarrassment Tambuwal has brought Nigeria. Do these born to rule and their minions in APC not have any shame?

  • Daniel

    Nigerians have short memory.
