Jonathan, Emir Sanusi reconcile

After nearly a year of bitter relations, President Goodluck Jonathan and the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, met Thursday in Abuja and reconciled differences that once drove both men to the extremes of their offices.

Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was fired by the president in February after accusing the government of diverting $20 billion oil revenues.

The government denied the claim, and in turn, accused Mr. Sanusi of “financial recklessness”.

After leaving office, Mr. Sanusi was appointed the Emir of Kano in June, assuming one of the most powerful traditional stools in Nigeria.

His appointment by Kano State’s Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, a member opposition All Progressives Congress, was opposed by the presidency which ordered the emir’s office blockaded for days.

The emir reportedly initiated peace moves, and the two men met for the first time in July during the breaking of the Muslim fast, a yearly routine in which the president meets top government officials who are Muslims and other prominent Islamic leaders in the country.

Our sources say Thursday’s meeting was essentially for reconciliation between the two sides.

The emir was accompanied to the meeting by all senior members of the Kano Emirate council, while Vice President Namadi Sambo, the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, Attorney General, Mohammed Adoke, and the Foreign Affairs Minister, Aminu Wali also attended the meeting.

Officials at the meeting say the president urged peace, and announced that he had nothing against the emir and that he had forgotten everything that happened.

In return, Mr. Sanusi also preached peace saying he too had let go of the past.

The president and the emir later met privately for about 15 minutes, according to our sources.

Mr. Sanusi and his entourage left for Kano shortly after, and were on their way to the Abuja airport at the time of this report.

Mumu, he called Sanusi to seek his cooperation when the forensic report on NNPC is released. But I guess that’s beyond you.

Of what significance is their reconciliation to the present national discourse biko? News reports have it that Mubi has fallen to Boko Haram insurgents because a battalion of soldiers at the Army HQ there bolted rather than fight the BH terrorists, other news say this same Dumbo preaching peace has withdrawn the security details of House Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal… so, what’s the sense in Dumbo’s truce in one breath and war with his next? Dr. Ngozi Iweala said in London two weeks go that the forensic report she ordered at the NNPC will be released in Novmber, let this “peace process” not deny Nigerians the real truth. Dumbo is not an honest man, he may have invited Sanusi to remain mum once that report is released. Meanwhile, Nigerians are still waiting anxiously for the return of the Chibok Girls he promised us two weeks. This is unnecessary distraction, Sanusi should go back to being Emir of Kano with his entourage in rabbit hats, Nigerians are tired of clowns… as grown men don’t quarrel. Even me & @Maria reconciled and nobody offered us odeku… Nonsense!

    • Chris1408

Rabbit hats, LOL. When GEJ assumed power, Nigeria had one government. Today there are 2 governments in Nigeria, Boko Haram ruling northeast while GEJ rules the remaining parts. Yet, this clown has the guts to contemplate reelection. Only in Nigeria

  • Oluwasanmi Daniel

WHAT DOES GOODLUCK JONATHAN STAND FOR?

Today, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria says over 650 billion Naira
is still un-accounted at the Central Bank of Nigeria under Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
That fact will not change as a result of Goodluck Jonathan’s theatre of the absurd here.
Nowhere in the world is “reconciliation” the lawful answer to ‘650 billion Naira missing’.

Goodluck Jonathan ignorantly pretends to powers he does not have –
and, quite immorally. He does not have any remission power under the law,
for crimes under investigation. Jonathan’s mandatory duty under the law is to
investigate and prosecute Sanusi Lamido Sanusi – not to reconcile with him.

Whatever Goodluck Jonathan pretends to be doing here is beyond his power as a public official.
Self-respect with a little dose of common sense should have paused Jonathan to do otherwise.

But now the question is: what exactly does Mr. Goodluck Jonathan stand for?
Certainly, not probity, honesty or accountability. Everyone in Nigeria knows that.
What’s now alarming is that Jonathan is willing to press these vices into the
public domain as examples for other public officials in the states to follow.
If Goodluck Jonathan stands for nothing he’ll be expected to fall for anything –
but he appears bent on dragging the along on his immoral journey to perfidy.

    • Seadog

      @Daniel:

You said you fear that President Jonathan is dragging Nigeria “along on his own immoral journey to perfidy.”
Of course, he is doing exactly that. You are right. That is the moral crisis in Nigeria now. The president of the country lays no good example.

By dragging in the biddable attorney-general Mohammed Adoke to this reconciliation meeting with Sanusi Lamido, my impression is that Jonathan wants to put it across to all Nigerians that under his own administration, all public officials are “free to pursue their own conquests; under a non-system of government where merits do not count, and, evil is not punished”.

  • Phil

This is commendable if it’s for the sake of Nigeria to be moved forward through peaceful coexistence at that level. But if it’s for the sake of selfish political gains and corruption cover ups, may God deal with them personally. The kind of reconciliation we need most at this point is one that will bring back our girls, end terrorism and corruption so that well meaning Nigerians can go to sleep with their 2 eyes closed.

  • Chris1408

Does it mean $20b, $49b or $10.8b is no longer missing? Only in Nigeria can such amount of money is unaccounted for and everybody is quiet about it. GEJ where’s our missing billion dollars?

    • sharp shape

Stay off drugs ! Go get a job and stop being a two faced loser ! Rubbish

  • Arogbo

    Sanusi is a rogue!

….FOR THIS IS ALL WE KNOW

      • ₦38.23billion developed legs and got missing in Central Bank under Sanusi
      Lamido,

      • ₦1.97billion was paid out in cash and entered on Central Bank accounts as
“inexplicable expense” by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi,

      • ₦20billion was paid out in cash as Legal Fees by Sanusi Lamido to persons
      un-known,

      • ₦3.086billion was paid out in cash by Sanusi Lamido as expense to promote Central
      Bank image,

      • ₦160billion was paid out for CBN on self-determined activities,

      • ₦240billion was discretionally doled out at will as ‘donations’ by Sanusi
      Lamido,

      • ₦1.12billion was taken in cash and entered as paid to a non-operating airline
      for charter service,

      • ₦1.12billion was claimed as spent by Sanusi Lamido on luncheon for CBN police
      guards in one year.

      • Marylene

        Alkali,

But how do Nigerians feel reading that they are being robbed on daily basis like this
by their officials? “I am surprised Nigerians are not angrier than
        what they show
,” Nelson Mandela publicly wonderedsaid a few years ago.

The refusal by Nigerians in general, to revolt with a sense of outrage still baffles foreigners

looking in from outside. “It may be that stealing is ingrained as Nigerian culture,”
a top American official was quoted as saying in 2001.

“The name of Nigeria is now corruption,” said Nigeria’s Prelate Adebayo, who projected a
bloody revolution soon, as a result. Foreigners keep their distance meanwhile,
waiting for Nigerians to decide themselves if they want to continue living as
thieves amongst thieves. Afterall, no one can force a horse to drink
anymore than a foreign country can force Nigerians to stop stealing.

Compared to the articulate, upright and ethical Sanusi Ado Bayero, the first son of Emir
Ado Bayero who died early this month, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi looks like a misfit.

There’s a clear difference between Emir of Kano and a Kwankwaso-iinfested Emir.
Indeed, Vanguard newspaper saw this point and reported today as follows:
“Sanusi Lamido’s emirship is yet to receive recognition of first class emirs or chiefs
as none – either from the North or South – has shown up in Kano on solidarity
visit, and the story is basically the same on the home front.

According to Vanguard, “The man who basically holds the key to the stability
of Sanusi’s reign as Emir of Kano, the eldest son of the late emir, and,
the hottest contender for the throne, Sanusi Ado Bayero – the Chiroman Kano
          – and his powerful younger brothers are yet to pay homage.
The Chiroman Kano’s refusal to pay homage to Sanusi is holding

Point of correction, sir! Emir Ado Bayero died in June this year, not early this month.

“When Mr Jonathan said he did not give a damn about about declaring his assets “.

What Jonathan actually said was he did not give a damn about declaring Assets PUBLICLY. GEJ had obviously declared his assets with the CCB.
There is a world of difference! I find it unfortunate that supposedly enlightened columnists could spread this sort of misinformation out of either Mischief or ignorance!
More pathetic is the crass ignorance displayed by the gullible who were shouting themselves hoarse over issues they knew nothing about.

The peace overture from Sanusi shows he has come down from his high horse but the president must be wary and not be carried away by this. The president must be careful to deal with anybody close to Kwankwaso of which Emir Sanusi is one of. That entourage did not say anything about the son of the late emir. If I were the president i would have demanded Sanusi should go and make peace with Ado Bayero Jr.

    • Cucumber

What does Sanusi Lamido Sanusi stand for; and, how does his immorality qualify him as Leader of Kano Muslims?
Does Islam accept adultery and financial crimes as the credentials for a Muslim Emir? I’ve been wondering awhile.

WHY SANUSI LAMIDO IS THE WRONG EMIR OF KANO

“The choice of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the disgraced former Governor
of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as the new Emir of Kano most inappropriate.
It is a choice that, wittingly or unwittingly, will bring the office of the Emir into disrepute
It is improper that a man who still has allegations of financial improprieties hanging
over his head at the national level, to which he might have to answer in the court of law,
should be appointed to such an important post. This is how Nigerian leaders show they have
little or no understanding of the ethics of public office and good governance. Lamido Sanusi
has just been fired as CBN governor on allegations of corrupt practices. How then can such a man
be rewarded with the appointment of Emir of Kano before his innocence is established?”

recognition of first class emirs or chiefs
as none – either from the North or South – has
shown up in Kano on solidarity visit, and the story
is basically the same on the home front.”

According to Vanguard newspaper, “The man who basically holds the key to the stability

of Sanusi’s reign as Emir of Kano, the eldest son of the late emir, and, the hottest contender

for the throne, Sanusi Ado Bayero – the Chiroman Kano – and his powerful younger brothers
    are yet to pay homage”.

The Chiroman Kano’s refusal to pay homage to Sanusi Lamido Sanusi,

according to Vanguard, “…is holding the city from the victory dance of the new emir,”

To whoever is writng or coping that nonsense from Vanguard paper article about the eldest son of Late Emir Ado bayero that is Sanusi Ado Bayero, the chiroma of kano. Do you even know that in the 2nd picture of this article the 3rd person after president GEJ and the 2nd person from the leftside of the pic is Alh Aminu Ado Bayero, the wamban Kano and 2nd eldest son of the late Emir after the chiroma? The chiroma has been given excuses of health issues as reasons why he’s still not back in Kano. The remaining members of the Kano emirate council are the Matawallen Kano Alh Ali Ibrahim Ahmad(Son In-law of the late emir Ado Bayero), Walin Kano Mahe Bashir wali( childhood friend of Alh Ado Bayero) and by the leftside of the Emir Sanusi is the Galadiman Kano Alh Abbas Sanusi(the closest associate and mate of Late Emir Ado Bayero), the Makaman Kano and then finally the last on the pic from the right is Dan Majen Kano Munnir Sanusi(Uncle of the current Emir). The Emir of Kano is more Sanusi Lamido Sanusi but rather Muhammad Sanusi II, a father to all. The former CBN governor is gone, he’s a peacemaker, a leader and a spiritualist. The fact the he agreed to let go of his feeling for GEJ and embrace peace for goodness of Kano is the best decision. Those articles on media papers written in defence of Sanusi Ado Bayero(Chiroma) or against The Emir Muhammadu Sanusi are the works of the Emir’s haters and enemies which I doubt The chiroma is one(except if he’s going against his late father who describe Current Emir as a proud grandson of his). The Emir of Kano is not just a mere joke for any danladi,Emeka or john to poke his nose and open his mouth to blabber, just thank God these days you have freedom to abuse people on media hidind from the fact of democracy as freedom to all. This isn’t decomcracy and never will a democrat abuse such thing. …….Magatakarda

Tell some of these morons who think they know more than anyone else!
SLS was paid N50 millions by FGN and was paid his salaries during suspension by the FGN
He will have clean record as former CBN Governor
He is an Emir = after 2015 what will be GEJ fate clearly SLS has trumped GEJ
Where are those press secretary at Presidency who wrote suspension letter to SLS?

  • @Amuwospeaks

Am pretty sure sanusi how corrupt our govt is, reconciling with GEJ does not give GEJ victory come 2015. Sanusi is a progressive minded fellow
