Soyinka attacks Jonathan over Boko Haram, says President shielding sect’s sponsors for politics

Ex-Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and President Jonathan at a meeting with the President of Chad

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has launched what appears his fiercest criticism yet of President Goodluck Jonathan, accusing Mr. Jonathan of shielding the sponsors of Boko Haram — whose identities are known to the president– for political reasons.

In a detailed statement Saturday, Mr. Soyinka said President Jonathan has demonstrated how, in an apparent desperation for re-election, he would be prepared to defend the worst of criminals, even those assisting Boko Haram.

Mr. Soyinka said the launch of the controversial #BringBackGoodluck2015 political slogan surpassed Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau’s cruelty that has claimed more than 13,000 lives in a bloody five-year campaign.

The slogan was adapted by supporters of Mr. Jonathan, and tweeted by his aide, Doyin Okupe, mimicking the hugely popular #BringBackOurGirls hashtag which was created to help rescue over 200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram.

“Shekau’s dance macabre was surpassed by the unfurling of a political campaign banner that defiled an entry point into Nigeria’s capital of Abuja. That banner read:  #BringBackJonathan2015,” Mr Soyinka said.

“Spurred by electoral desperation, a bunch of self-seeking morons and sycophants chose to plumb the abyss of self-degradation and drag the nation down to their level. It took us to a hitherto unprecedented low in ethical degeneration.”

Mr. Soyinka, a known critic of the government, said while the president has since disowned the banners, that did little to reverse the damage they caused.

“The very possibility of such a desecration took the Nigerian nation several notches down in human regard,” he said.

Mr. Soyinka’s fury summed a week outstanding in Nigeria for two controversial events, both engineered largely by the presidency.

The first was the use of the #BringBackGoodluck2015 slogan, and the second, a photograph showing Mr. Jonathan in a security meeting with Chadian President Idris Deby, with Modu Sheriff, a former Borno State governor accused of sponsoring Boko Haram, in attendance.

Mr. Sheriff was named by an Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, who negotiated with Boko Haram for a while to seek the release of the Chibok girls. The Australian also accused a former army chief, Azubuike Ihejirika, of backing the extremist sect.

The presidency has denied any wrongdoing in the two incidents, amid an outpouring of rage by Nigerians.

But Mr. Soyinka said while Mr. Jonathan’s office issued a rebuttal for the BringBackGoodluck2015 banners, the presidency cleared any doubt of its complicity in shielding sponsors of Boko Haram by allowing Mr. Sheriff to be part of his trip to Chad.

“As if to confirm all the surmises, an ex-governor, Sheriff, notorious throughout the nation – including within security circles as affirmed in their formal dossiers – as prime suspect in the sponsorship league of the scourge named Boko Haram, was presented to the world as a presidential traveling companion. And the speculation became: was the culture of impunity finally receiving endorsement as a governance yardstick?

“Again, Goodluck Jonathan, swung into a plausible explanation: it was Mr. Sheriff who, as friend of the host President Idris Deby, had travelled ahead to Chad to receive Jonathan as part of President Deby’s welcome entourage.  What, however does this say of any president? How came it that a suspected affiliate of a deadly criminal gang, publicly under such ominous cloud, had the confidence to smuggle himself into the welcoming committee of another nation, and even appear in audience, to all appearance a co-host with the president of that nation?” he asked.

Mr. Soyinka lambasted the president for associating with some of the country’s most controversial figures, in an apparent desperation to retain power.

“Goodluck Jonathan has brought back into limelight more political reprobates – thus attested in criminal courts of law and/or police investigations – than any other Head of State since the nation’s independence”.

He criticised the government for dismissing the allegations made by Mr. Davis, the Australian negotiator, who also accused an unnamed senior official of the Central Bank of Nigeria as being behind Boko Haram’s expansive financing network.

In a statement that provided as much revelations as its rebuke of the president, Mr. Soyinka said he has independently confirmed the identity of the CBN official implicated, and that he was informed Mr. Jonathan had been given the name of the official involved.

He said if the president was uncertain of the official’s name, he was prepared to share same with Mr. Jonathan when the president is ready to “abandon his accommodating policy towards the implicated, even the criminalized, an attitude that owes so much to re-election desperation” and “when he moves from a passive “letting the law to take its course” to galvanizing the law to take its course”.

Mr. Soyinka said having worked with the Australian to end the Niger Delta insurgency under the Yar’adua administration, he was confident his revelations cannot be waived off.

“I know Stephen Davis, I worked in the background with him during efforts to resolve the insurrection in the Delta region under President Shehu Yar’Adua. I have not been involved in his recent labours for a number of reasons. The most basic is that my threshold for confronting evil across a table is not as high as his – thanks, perhaps, to his priestly calling,” he said.

“I am therefore compelled to warn that anything that Stephen Davis claims to have uncovered cannot be dismissed out of hand.  It cannot be wished away by foul-mouthed abuse and cheap attempts to impugn his integrity – that is an absolute waste of time and effort.”

He called for the immediate prosecution of Mr. Sheriff saying the evidences against the former governor are overwhelming. He offered his support for senior lawyer, Femi Falana, who has threatened legal action to compel the government to charge Mr. Sheriff for his alleged role in the Boko Haram insurgency.

“The evidence in possession of Security Agencies – plus a number of diplomats in Nigeria – is overwhelming, and all that is left is to let the man face criminal persecution. It is certain he will also take many others down with him,” he said of Mr. Sheriff.

He also called for an international investigation of Mr. Ihejirika’s role in the insurgency.

    Thanks Kongi…
Your last sentence is the reason Dr. DoNothing will do nothing about his friends and Boko Haram terrorists. Yes, trying Sheriff means he will not go down alone, the PDP will crash like their podium in Minna. Sha, thanks for attesting to the character and impeccable reputation of Dr. Stephen Davis with, “anything that Stephen Davis claims to have uncovered cannot be dismissed… foul-mouthed abuse and cheap attempts to impugn his integrity… is an absolute waste of time and efforts”. Baba Iyabo accused Dumbo of helping criminals escape justice… From his VP Sambo’s political sponsors by PDP gun-runners in Kaduna, to Sen. Ndume’s meeting with BH Commanders in Saudi Arabia; from Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika’s sponsorship and importation of terrorists to Abia State, to the arrest of suspected Tuareg terrorists in Bayelsa State Guest House in Lagos State… now, this obscure character at the CBN. Why is Dumbo protecting deadly criminals if he’s not part of their complot? These people responsible for mass murder and for Dumbo who claimed his re-election is not worth one drop of blood, it goes to prove the deceit and wickedness I’ve railed on for years about the Clown Prince of Otuoke… I call him a moron and his supporters sycophants. Indeed today, Prof. Soyinka has adopted the same wording in describing the creek crook, Kongi’s only short-coming is not naming this crazy CBN banker whose identity he has independently unearthed. Why I everyone afraid of mentioning this man’s name, biko? Dr. Dumbo is a war criminal as Head of the Boko Haram terrorist organization. When he declares for reelection is when we will declare his ahss wanted at The Hague… mass murderer!

Any Nigerian with conscience should not allow this wasteful administration back into office come 2015. Foreign embassies are compiling their own security reports and forwarding to their home governments. they know how monumentally corrupt this administration is. This is a presidency that shielded Maina who literally emptied the Pension Fund. The Nigerian police was directed to lie to the nation on his whereabouts. While ethnic bigots can believe the empty statements of Ruben Abati that doesn’t add up, foreign embassies are not hoodwinked by such shameful lies. We may be the first country in Africa to have a sitting president arrested abroad and hounded to Hague. The secretary to the federal government has abandoned his duty to follow TAN campaign all over the country. A suspected sponsor of Boko Haram is the facilitator between two presidents in discussing strategies to fight his organisation?
The main reasons why Jonathan wants to continue in 2015 is to give presidential pardon to his crook friends, to protect his secret relationships and failings from coming out in the open, to licence oil theft, deplete all known revenue, and reign vengeance on his critics. There is nothing in his agenda that says he wants to solve any problem.

If President Goodluck Jonathan knew all along that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was a suspect for financing Boko Haram via Central Bank of Nigeria’s funds, and under the disguise of ‘donations’, President Jonathan risks being arrested at a point in the future to face criminal trial for sabotage under Nigerian law.

It is a felony under Nigerian law for a public official to be remiss, daft or negligent in the face of an armed invasion of Nigeria, if that negligence had the natural effect of causing the invasion to progress with mass murder.

By doing nothing until it was too late; and allowing himself to be led by the nose by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, rather than be proactive in promptly arresting Sanusi Lamido for treasonable felony, President Jonathan may just have earned himself a standing position in the dock of a criminal court. ‘Aiding the enemy’ is both an active and a passive phrase. Dear Editor:

IT IS TIME TO BRING SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI INTO CUSTODY

Wole Soyinka is right. Official records show Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as a criminal terrorist suspect till today.
An affidavit in April filed at the Federal High Court is public record. It is there for a honest journalist to see.
According to the Department of State Security [DSS] which executed the affidavit in the High Court,
Nigeria’s security agency is STILL SEEKING TO BRING SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI INTO CUSTODY for trial.
The intervening event was Sanusi Lamido’s installation as Emir of Kano; courtesy of Gov. Kwankwanso.
But as Reuben Reuben Abati, a presidential aide said last week, “the Emirate of Kano is not a cover for (malfeasance in) Central Bank”. Now, as corroborative evidence becomes stronger, all thinking Nigerians must demand the arrest

This plan to make the North East ungovernable for the President, it said, will not work as the group made up of grassroots persons will “soon start mentioning names of those behind Boko Haram activities in Nigeria.”

Onogu said, “Boko Haram cannot reveal their real sponsors to Nigerians, they will continue to lie. APC leaders are happy because the Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, did not mention the names of their members as Boko Haram sponsors, we at the grassroots will soon mention their names, the truth will soon be revealed.

“APC has been using the media to blackmail President Goodluck Jonathan, their plan is to make the country ungovernable for him, they have plans of diverting the attention of Nigerians but it will not work out.”

The Chairman said the PDP Councillors Forum is fully behind the President in his fight against insurgency and for peace to return to the country.

“Boko Haram activities will soon be a thing of the past, it will not be forever, God is fighting for President Jonathan, He will fight for the PDP and the party will surely triumph in the forthcoming elections,” Onogu said.

      @Weydem:

I think Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso of Kano state too must be forthwith arrested

and put on trial for criminal conspiracy and terrorism alongside Sanusi Lamido Sanusi,

for having express notice via the said affidavit filed at the High Court in April

by the Department of the State Security; but with intent to hinder criminal investigation

of terrorism and stealing by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, going ahead nevertheless
in utter abuse of state power to appoint Sanusi Lamido as Emir of Kano

in June of the same year, so as to confer Sanusi Lamido Sanusi with traditional immunity from arrest.

IS SANUSI NOT WITH APC—————————happily—–Peoples Democratic Party Councillors Forum has threatened to mention leaders of the All Progressives Congress who are allegedly sponsoring the Boko Haram sect in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Collins Onogu, told journalists that by their recent activities and pronouncements, the APC leaders are poised to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said the Boko Haram activities in the North East became so high because most of the rural dwellers in the area are PDP members.

Onogu said, “Most of those who have been rendered homeless in the North Eastern part of the country by Boko Haram are PDP members. What is their offence? The spokesperson of APC, Lai Mohammed has neglected his duty and he is now making statements on behalf of Boko Haram. The APC is calling for the probe Alli Modu Sheriff and Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika who may not even know anything about Boko Haram. Is that supposed to be h

I live in Nigeria. I see the shenanigans of our journalists. I weep for my country.
I wonder why our journalists wage war and under-develop Nigeria.
It is baffling. Is it for bribe money they sell off their country for a pot of porridge; or, what?
I simply don’t understand how educated persons in journalism can wage an intellectual war
against their own country over the pending Sanusi Lamido case. It is a sin history will not forgive.

Till today, despite investigated facts of thefts at Central Bank and uncovered by auditors,
no journalist in Nigeria has either asked that Sanusi Lamido and his accomplices be prosecuted
for thefts, or, suggested that all missing moneys at the Central Bank of Nigeria un-covered by audit
and admitted missing by Sanusi Lamido himself, be recovered. What kind of corrupt
journalism is going on in Nigeria today? Now we are told that part of this
money was likely used to finance Boko Haram terrorism, yet Nigerian
journalists, for the most part, keep quiet. Nigeria is now in complete mess.
Journalists have joined thieves and terrorists as look-alikes.

Nigeria’s first Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, put it best in the Vanguard newspaper today,

September 14th. He said: “Nigeria is no longer a country.. It is not a country where people can live

to survive. Nigeria is place ruled by criminals and thieves, and those who believe in plundering and looting.”

Great. Nigerians are now waking up to ask the right questions!
The amount of money in Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s pending case is
a whopping ₦650 billion, which is equivalent to the entire revenue
of Lagos state from the federation account for five consecutive [5] years.

        • sirjoka

650 billion naira??? Please how did you arrive at such amount? I have read the FRC report and your amount seems outrageous

        • Maria

Jonathan stole 67 billion dollars recently and he is still stealing.

“Spurred by electoral desperation, a bunch of self-seeking morons and sycophants chose to plumb the abyss of self-degradation and drag the nation down to their level. It took us to a hitherto unprecedented low in ethical degeneration.”. Thank you Prof. There’s nothing left to say anymore.

  • Ibukun Tosin

For such a highly educated man, Soyinka’s argumentative skills are very poor. His one and only reason for people not to vote for GEJ is because of the kidnapping of the Chibok girls. Has Goodluck not sent troops in search of them? Wole totally ignores all the good Goodluck has done in that aspect and even in others and aims to blindside the rest of Nigeria. If we shouldnt vote for Goodluck you need to have stronger reasons to back up your theory.
