PDP hits back over Sheriff, Ihejirika; says Australian’s revelations prove APC behind Boko Haram

Stephen Davis, with some masked 'Boko Haram members'

Nigeria’s ruling party, The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has hit back at the opposition All Progressives Congress, after the APC said recent allegations by a government-appointed Boko Haram negotiator, show that senior PDP members and allies of President Goodluck Jonathan are masterminds of the sect.

At a press conference Tuesday, the APC demanded the immediate trial of a former governor of Borno State, Modu Sheriff, a PDP member; and a former army chief, Azubuike Ihejirika.

Both former officials were named by an Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, as Boko Haram sponsors.

The chairman of opposition party, Odigie Oyegun, said revelations by Mr. Davis show the federal government had wrongly accused the APC of being behind Boko Haram.

“They have called us all sorts of derogatory names, but failed to provide any shred of evidence to support their claim,” Mr. Oyegun said.

The APC chairman described Mr. Sheriff as a man known to all Nigerians as the founder of Boko Haram, but who has continued to escape justice and is now Mr. Jonathan’s ally.

“He is a known ally of the president and he is not known to be under any immunity. Yet he was never arrested or even questioned,” he said.

“The die is cast. The truth is finally out! Boko Haram sponsors have been exposed. They are within the ruling PDP. They are friends of President Jonathan.

“He cannot pretend not to know who they are and what they have done and are still doing. His myriad of intelligence agencies, including the SSS and the DMI, cannot pretend they do not have any information on these men,” Mr Oyegun said.

Mr. Oyegun said while it is true that Mr. Sheriff was until recently a member of his party, the APC had always suspected that he was a mole, planted to hijack or at best weaken the new Party for the PDP.

“We know for sure that Ali Modu Sheriff was planted in the APC to help decimate our party. We confronted him openly during the merger negotiation but he denied vigorously.

“His surrogate for the post of the Chairman of the APC, Chief Tom Ikimi together with whom they planned to hijack the Party for the Presidency was firmly rejected.

“Realizing they have failed, they fled our party and returned to where they came from, and were duly embraced by their controllers,” Mr. Oyegun said.

He added: “All through his time with our Party, every time they accused us of sponsoring Boko Haram, on the basis of his presence, we challenged them if they had evidence to arrest any of our members who is suspected to be a sponsor, they never did.

“They dared not, because Sheriff was their agent. Even if he had remained in the APC after we democratically encouraged him to go, they would still not have arrested him,” he said.

In its response Wednesday, the PDP said the APC merely sought to use the allegations by Mr. Davis to launder its image. The party said revelations by the Australian have merely confirmed that the APC was behind Boko Haram.

“If not to achieve the self-serving purpose of exonerating the APC, why would Oyegun’s statement choose to be silent on the revelation by Davis that some people opposed to President Goodluck Jonathan used their connections to Boko Haram to frustrate his efforts?,” a statement by party spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, said.

“We also wonder why the APC has chosen to ignore some of the revealing aspects of Dr. Davis’ interview concerning Boko Haram’s funding and sponsorship. Is it because they are not favourable to them?”

Read the full statement released by the PDP Wednesday
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has noted yet another failed image laundering stunt by the APC wherein its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun cheapened his office and person by attempting to use an unempirical statement by Australian Dr. Stephen Davis, to absolve his party of blames for promoting insurgency in the country.

Whilst we recognize the right of citizens to hold and canvass opinion in a democratic setting such as guaranteed under the PDP-led administration, we hold, and strongly too that such rights must be properly and respectably exercised.

It is therefore shocking and worrisome that the APC National Chairman, in a frenzied effort to extricate his party, could issue a statement completely lacking in validity, character and intellectual content befitting of a National Chairman of a political party.

Oyegun’s statement rather than exonerate the APC has reinforced and underscored its true identity as a party of desperate politicians supportive of violence and disunity through their utterances and body language, a fact that is already well known to all Nigerians.

In trying to stand the truth on its head, Oyegun has succeeded in further exposing the desperation of the APC to launder its image through renewed propaganda and blackmail, a project which has already failed.

If not to achieve the self-serving purpose of exonerating the APC, why would Oyegun’s statement choose to be silent on the revelation by Davis that some people opposed to President Goodluck Jonathan used their connections to Boko Haram to frustrate his efforts?

We also wonder why the APC has chosen to ignore some of the revealing aspects of Dr. Davis’ interview concerning Boko Haram’s funding and sponsorship. Is it because they are not favourable to them?

While not holding brief for anybody, it is clear to every discerning mind that Oyegun’s statement, with all intent and purpose is yet another decoy to frustrate genuine effort at finding solution to the security challenges we face as a nation to the advantage of the APC whose penchant to use the promoting of violence as tool to achieve political
control is well known to all.

Nigerians may recall the frenzy with which the APC fought against moves by the British Parliament to investigate its involvement with terrorist elements as well as to divert attention from their meetings outside the shores of our country in their bid to promote insurgency in Nigeria.

For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to restate that we stand by our statements that the APC as a party with a Janjaweed ideology has been promoting insurgency and acts of terrorism through the actions and utterances of its leaders. Indeed, no amount of blackmail or propaganda can erase this truth.

Nigerians have since noted the pattern and timing of violent attacks against our people which betray a trend tailored against the PDP and the Federal Government and provide impetus for the APC to find a voice and thrive. They know that it has become a recurring decimal that whenever the PDP or the Federal Government records or is about to record a major milestone, insurgents launch attacks on the people.

Oyegun must understand that Nigerians know the APC for what it truly is and can no longer be hoodwinked by propaganda, blackmail and tactical misrepresentation. He should therefore stop debasing his office by struggling for media space with his National Publicity Secretary.

It is indeed disheartening that the APC National Chairman has continued to disparage his office and age by making series of unguarded and inflammatory utterances and issuing statements laced with fabrications and wild allegations while leading his party like a frustrated rebel group desperate for political control; and whose understanding of
opposition is crass unruliness and a culture of irresponsibility.

Chief Oyegun has only succeeded in disappointing many Nigerians who thought his coming to office will result in a more responsible and constructive opposition. Instead, the reprehensible image of the APC as a party that has nothing good to offer has worsened under his watch.

In the last two months, he has made more incendiary statements aimed to incite the people and balkanize the nation than any other opposition chairman has done. The threat to form a parallel government and other inflammatory statements at APC events readily come to mind.

Our advice to the opposition is that they should learn to properly comport themselves, eschew bitterness, desperation and divisive tendencies and think of how to make meaningful contributions to tackle the challenges facing the nation.

On his own part, Chief Oyegun, as a former state governor should retrace his steps and strive to be nationalistic and statesmanlike and comport himself as an opposition leader. For now, he is a little more than a glorified media assistant. A word is enough for the wise.

Olisa Metuh
National Publicity Secretary

I was the one that made the law prohibiting Boko Haram in Borno.
**I was the first victim of Boko Haram in Borno State. In their first attack, they killed my brother, the same father and mother with me.

The Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff who was recently named to be among Boko Haram major sponsors and financier has voiced out his opinion and what he knows about the dreaded sect, he also denies the allegation levied against him by the Australian negotiator who indicted him along with former retired Army chief, Ikejirika as BH sponsors.

Sheriff said records of his activities as governor of Borno State showed that he was against the sect, adding that anybody who links him with Boko Haram must be insane.

His words: “The Boko Haram war as we know it today, started in 2002 in Yobe State. The first attack of Boko Haram was in 2002 in Kanama, from there they ran to Borno State. And in 2002, where was I? I wasn’t a governor. There was a sitting governor in Borno State, and there was Boko Haram. They ran away from Kanama and moved to Gwoza hill!

“But come to think of it, who is Mohammed Yusuf ( first leader of the group)? Yusuf had been in Maiduguri, doing his preaching and later taken to court by the Federal Government, and prosecuted in Abuja, ever before I became a governor. And who was the first casualty of Boko Haram in Borno State? It is me.

      • Maria

Modu Sherif is one the sponsors… when Yusuf was arrested, he was about to spill the beans when the police interrogating him with journalists received a phone call. They ordered the journalists to go out… After, the next thing was Yusuf was shot dead. Who did? PDP people. Otherwise, PDP government should have investigated the death Yusuf to unravel those who asked the police to kill him. What is Modu Sherif now doing in PDP? Hmmmmmm. PDP is the sponsor of Boko Haram All those who claimed Nigeria will be made ungovernable should Jonathan become president are all PDP bigwigs…You cant twist this story…They are the Jonathan opposition within PDP.

Sanusi for sure bcos the Emir that I know doesn’t have three sons! Modu Sheriff issued a watery explanation that the opposition paid Dr. Davies to smear his “good name”…wonders shall never end! If Sheriff has a good name, ‘wahala’ means ‘saint’ in Naija slangs. The PDP-led Govt. must explain to Nigerians why the repatriated suspect in Nyanya bombing has not even been interviewed till date… why the father-son gunrunners in Kaduna and sponsors of PDP ati Sambo, and the Boko Haram have still not been tried; why the airport was opened just so Sheriff can land his private jet while pilgrims were forced to ply the dangerous roads from Maiduguri-to-Kano; why Army armory is empty despite trillions in defense budget annually, and special Security Vote allocated for fighting the insurgency…

If I were Metuh and the PDP I would keep quiet for now because the Australian has not finished talking, he is our ‘Snowden’. It is proactive to arrest the “birds in hand” while we wait for Metuh to name his suspects, than trade insults while the carnage continues. Few weeks after castigating the Federal Government for allegedly hiring a foreign PUBLIC RELATIONS firm, the All progressive Congress, APC, has hired Burson-Marsteller, a London based Public Relations and Public Affairs for an annual fee of $1.2 Million, approximately N200 Million.

Perception and narratives that its members are Boko Haram sympathizers, trail the APC, an appendage that may likely affect the APC’s electoral fortunes in 2015. One of the main focuses of the P.R firm would be to change the narrative using the media among others.

Details of the contract papers obtained from United State Department of JUSTICE shows that Burson-Marsteller will partner with Prime Policy Group based in the United States and will support the APC to develop messaging documents, pursue meetings with the media in London and Washington DC.

They will also pursue meetings with Political leaders and civil servants in London and Washington DC and develop briefing materials ahead of meetings.

APC had recently hired AKPD, President Barack Obama’s political strategy group to help position the party ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The APC has come under serious criticism for either not condemning the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents when they STARTED or having members linked to the sect within its rank and file.

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, Senator Ali Ndume are knows supporters of the Sect who are members of the APC. While Ndume is currently facing charges for allegedly sponsoring Boko Haram, Sheriff has not been charged.

The documents dated 12 May 2014, was signed by Delano Family Limited for the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Ladi Delano, an acclaimed Billionaire who also fronts for APC’s National Leader, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, owns Delano Family Limited, DFL.

If this is the response from PDP then it is clear that PDP has lost steam. They are just parading words without any meaning or focus. This is a BIG shame to Jonathan. Infact, GEJ should sack Metuh with immediate effect for further damaging their already battered image. It is now confirmed that this is the worst administration ever in this country and may God in His Infinite Mercy rescue us from these vampires.

AP has come under serious criticism for either not condemning the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents when they STARTED or having members linked to the sect within its rank and file.

According to the engagement letter, the appointment was deem to have started in May 12, 2014 with a monthly fee of $100,000.00–APC and their wahala-called propaganda–they do not even know how to tell a lie-

Unsobered by some costly spirits like the type I saw at Exclusive stores selling for N975,000 a bottle; which are of course purchased with proceeds of sleaze, like the oil subsidy scam. Now thus thoroughly un sobered they take Nigerians for fools and for a ride! They underestimate the mood of Nigerians and vomit nonsense on us, beleiving us to be unthinking! The reason is simple: To continue to carouse while Nigeria is aflame. “There is God ooh”!

  • adegbola

I will not blame metu for nonsensical statement he has just made on this platform, the man is simply struggling to keep his job by just saying anything so that it won’t look as if he is not doing his job. Anyone who has been following the political events in Nigeria and truely want to say the fact will know that right from the beginning those that said they will make Nigeria ungovernable for Gej are the agreeved pdp member who felt that the tenure of presidential zoning to the north has not expired and therefore felt it is not right for Gej to be in that office yet. So pdp should arrest those that have been accused and investigate them very well if truely their hands are clean in this matter other than making excuses and shifting blame all the time

I think Jonathan should not have contracted Davis in the first place. Davis is a close allies of OBJ, and since he – Jonathan is no more in good times with OBJ, chances are that OBJ may influence Davis to say what he said so as to dent Jonathan and PDP. Davis statements are full of contradictions.

    • Mohstone

Please mention the contradictions ??? And what makes you think Davis cares about the problem between Obj and GEJ ?? And who even told you that there is a problem between the two when recently Obj came to Abuja to plead on behalf of Ribadu for PDP seat at Adamawa ??? Abeg make we hear word jare!!! Davis revealed what most Nigerians knew so its not news just that he mentioned names. And we all saw what happened to Azazi when he made similar revelations.

am so surprise , that you could be uttering such words without giving more meaning to it,he Mr Davies should have publish the comprehensive list with him, he mentioned of the former CBN official who is aiding the transfer of money to Egypt, but failed to mention it,for a preposterous reason for all i care, he mentioned IHEJIRIKA AND SHERRIF and failed to mention the rest when he already have the names, but promise to publish it later…..after sowing the seed of confusion. i refused to be fooled by this devilish agenda.
in all what worries me is the interest of the poor masses in this project,,,i do really pray for a change of PDP government, but it annoys me greatly that the opposition i thought that will provide a positive framework for better governance is so shamefully occupied by dictators and looters of public treasurer ,APC ,,,,is not the alternative either, GODoooo

Everything in our country eventually comes down to politics. Political leadership that cannot lead because they do not care. Something so big and so serious as the issue of Boko Haram. An that threatens our very existence as a people. An issue that has resulted in the slaughter of thousands of Nigerians, rendered many homeless, jobless, refugees, our young children abducted and others killed, and a portion of this country declared a foreign clime, still clowns who call themselves leaders irrespective of their political shade are busy bickering and exchanging cheap nauseating political points. It is simply unbelievely. Are we this useless as a people.

  • amazing2012

With PDP hitting back it means no one is guilty or responsible to whatever that is happening us the masses who voted for Nigerian politicians.
If we agree that PDP has no hand but of the mandate it has to protect people, why it can not do anything about it ?

  • GbemigaO

Useless politicians . When Shettina was in APC , the APC members did not push for his prosecution . Now that he is in PDP , they are blowing off their mouths. Come to think of it, when we want to prosecute this case, is it Davis or Shekau that will come to give evidence in court ?

    • Richard

…Thats exactly the issue…..the Australian is compromised or bent to favor the high powered opposition of GEJ…it might not only be those against PDP.

      • John

U are a complete Jonathanian! There is no difference between u, metuh and Abati. U point fingers and never address issues. Hope u won’t say APC bribed Davis to tell lies about PDP? For a very long time, PDP kept saying Boko Haram is sponsored by APC without any prove. Now there is prove from someone the PDP govt employed, u r looking for escape u. “Chai………..there is God o……….All this blood u r shaaaring……”

  • TRUTH MASTER

This statement was high on personal attacks against the APC Chair and low in providing exculpatory evidence for the persons who were named as sponsors of Boko Haram as well as for the PDP

What is going on here is a battle of ideas. Since Olisa Metuh knows he falls short, he should have kept quiet, rather than issue this unconvincing and infantile statement.

The truth remains: Pres. Jonathan’s negotiator named Ihejirika and Sheriff as sponsors. Whatever defence they have should be presented to the ICC at The Hague!

  • ND

Davies statement is unempirical. How APC rushed to use it to score political point baffles me. Nigeria deserve better opposition.

    • Richard

      …That is it!!!

was it not the pdp that stated the blackmail?now,it has back fired. pdp hired mr davies to negotiate on their behalf. stop blaming the apc.i think those two men that were accused should be sent to icc for prosecution

  • Gbo_lee

This is not hitting back at all,he has not raised any points. There were no mentions of the APC in that interview nor was any member of the APC implicated by his revelations. Which is why I find this “defence” from the PDP is laughable. I felt Olisa Metuh should have dedicated his time to trying to respond to the allegations raised against the PDP and not just try to cover it by shifting blame onto another party that has no case to answer actually. Defend your party Olisa before you think of another party

    • Richard

….So you did not read where it was categorically stated that there are others who are in the opposition of GEJ….who are they?……that which concerns CBN and the description that gave away Sanusi but was unable to mention Sanusi name…..why hiding all those. Anyway, as far as I am concerned the Australian has compromised and if you read the report you will know that……one time the Northern elites were accusing Ihejirika to be committing genocide and wanted to take him to the International Court and some elements from the east said let them dare it and all atrocities of the north would also come to bare…..they calmed down and now through the Australian they want to get what they could not earlier…….All these Australian report though not confirmed as far as i am concerned has a lot of un clarified issues and has been compromised.

  • Sunny

I think Mr. Metuh should first ask his boss, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to address the allegation leveled against two prominent citizens of this country by Dr. Davis, before his try to divert attentions of some Nigerians from the real issue on ground. Although APC does not have any moral justification at this time to point an accusing finger to PDP because the person of Mr. Alimodu Sheriff was in their fold before he decamped to PDP some weeks back. What is most important now is that GEJ should send those that have been named to the ICC for proper prosecution for the allegation leveled against them, we need peace in this country. Let there be end to the killing of innocent citizens, may God help our great country.

    • Richard

WHY would Metuh do that while the Australian came short of the names that affect APC…..If the Australian is been manipulated, he should mention all those names he said he could not mention for security purposes……the two names he mentioned are they not too bad for security purposes…..while I would not support a bad person to go free but for equity sake some names should not be hidden because the mentioning of the names would be to the benefit of PDP. The Australian has been working with the northern elites and was initially contracted by late Yaradua….he has fallen into the hands of the northern elites and he is working on their scripts……unfortunately, Nigerians are now more sophisticated and cannot swallow any information without asking questions……whoever, that agrees with the Australian on the level of information given….wants the disunity of Nigeria….period.

      • Abate Dokpu

You are either a little mind or a crooked mind. Your reasoning is simply warped.

  • John

From all the comments it is evident that Nigeria so deserve what they have.

But we are busy protecting suspects in the name of tribe, religion and region. Who ever that is suspected should be put under investigation regardless of where and who ever he is !

    • Richard

…..THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE…..WHY WOULD THE AUSTRALIAN COME OUT TO CALL NAMES THAT ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE GOVERNMENT IN POWER AND CAME SHORT IN CALLING THE OTHER NAMES THAT AFFECT APC……INSTEAD, SAID FOR SECURITY PURPOSES……..IF THE MAN IS NOT BEEN USED ….HE SHOULD COME OUT AND MENTION ALL NAMES WITHOUT HOLDING ANY BACK…….NIGERIANS HAS GROWN IN THINKING AND ANALYSES……SO ONE AUSTRALIAN CANNOT TAKE US FOR A RIDE……..HE IS BEEN MANIPULATED AND THAT IS CLEAR WHICH WILL IN TURN UNDERMINE HIS REPORT……

      • Law

@Richard, is it not PDP that called him for the girls release, so why will he turn his back on them?

  • wode

Olisa Mettud, PDP and their master, GEJ should all bury their heads in shame. What an irresponsible set of people? Who cares which party any criminal belongs to? The issue is that BH problem has been going unabated for years, you claim to contract the service of one of your advisers to negotiate the release of the abducted girls. Everybody knows that this guy – Davis – was there at the Lion’s then, putting his life at the highest form of risk, all in the name to negotiate the release of the girls.

The guy now came back after four months stating what he knows based on his interaction with BH. He told the Government and instead of Government to get these people arrested and prosecuted, a ploy to further exploit the situation for political gain is the side they are looking at.

Few weeks ago, there was news paper headline that some top politicians were arrested/invited for questioning by DSS regarding the BH sponsorship. These people were not named by Government, instead went behind to negotiate a political deal with them. It was after this that Ali Modu Sheriff arrived in Maiduguri Airport, that was said to have been closed down due to security reason, and even the Governor of the sate could not use it. Modu Sheriff received heroic welcome at the port after he has struck a deal with PDP-lead Government. I think, it’s out of frustration of GEJ/FGN not acting responsibly, that he (Davis) decided to blow the whistle for public awareness.

If the leadership/head is bad, it in turn affects the whole system. I doubt if we have the real type of leader this country deserves. We need a very strong, decisive, and courageous leader to fight this menace called BH that seems to be growing in strength by the day. The leadership are just interested in the what they get from the budget for the security, no really the deserved security for the nation. It’s a shame.

The Message for Mettuh, PDP and most especially, the President is that they are the one in Government. Nigerians are not interested in the blame-game they are getting themselves into in a bid to distract people’s attention. They should do what they are voted for to do – Protect the citizenry – among others. Arrest and prosecute whoever is stated to be having links with BH, including those they claimed are at the CBN helping the funding course. If they are not capable, as it’s apparent, they should quit forthwith!

Fellow Nigerians, I belief the APC has no hand in Boko Haram. they are mainly northerners and i don’t see a reason why they will be killing their brothers, sisters and fathers, Raping their own daughters just to frustrate GEJ. Even the dumbest person on earth won’t do that. GEJ is not responsible enough to lead Nigeria, if not loads of politicians would have been facing ICC by now, Boko Haram invades States where State of emergency rule is in place, soldiers flee (some to cameroun) yet no court Martial is issued to them for Negligence of duty. I think the more problem is the PDP rather than APC. If the president is committed to security, i think Ihejirika and Sheriff should have been facing the second trial day in ICC. Your country is turning upside down and your are struggling for second tenure!!! Mehn!! that is extremely sick.

When leaders are not properly elected through democratic elections through the ballot box they don’t lead. They always think that they will be back by hook or crook the way they got in the first time. Remember when OBJ raised the price of fuel approximately 6weeks before his reelection. He did knowing fully well that he will win compliments of the then INEC chairman. Lord Iwu. First the Govt said they do not negotiate with terrorists and they went ahead to hire a negotiator. The Govt hired the Australian and the Australian provided a report based on his contract with the Govt. Now they are blaming APC for the report. Na wah. The Govt should send officials to interview this guy and provide all information that he has concerning BH. Who is the CBN guy. Nigerians have to know.

Useless Metuh, only half-brained heads like you can believe you. No amount of blackmail of the opposition can wipe our impression of your conspiracy and misrule. It’s a matter of time, all you evil men/women in Nigeria will be stroke by the power of God.

You think APC can salvage Nigeria? You better have a rethink

      • Mohstone

Ok you think PDP is doing a good job abi???

          They are all the same

t is paradoxical that the same Ihejirika who was accused by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) sometime ago of al- leged human rights abuses in the prosecution of the war on terror- ism is the same person being al- leged as its sponsor.
