Jonathan Fires Back at Buhari: You lack moral right to complain about impunity

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to comments attributed to a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, castigating him for an alleged brutal crackdown on the opposition in the country.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, Mr. Jonathan described Mr. Buhari’s statement as uncharitable and unwarranted.

The president advised the former head of state not to blame him for his party’s woes.

“We therefore urge General Buhari to tarry a while, ponder over his own antecedents and do a reality check as to whether he has the moral right to be so carelessly sanctimonious,” Mr. Jonathan said.

“It may well be time to pull the brakes, as General Buhari says in his statement, but it is he and others who have resorted to idle scapegoating and blaming President Jonathan for their self-inflected political troubles who need to stop their inexcusable partisanship and show greater regard for the truth, democracy, constitutionalism, the rule of law, peace, security and the well-being of the nation.”

Read full statement below:

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

DON’T BLAME ME FOR YOUR PARTY’S SELF-INFLICTED WOES – PRESIDENT JONATHAN TELLS BUHARI

We have noted with much surprise and regret, the statement issued by General Muhammadu Buhari today in which he made some wild and totally unsustainable allegations against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Although he tries very hard to deny it in the statement titled “Pull Nigeria Back From the Brink”, there can be no doubt that General Buhari has sadly moved away from the patriotic and statesmanlike position he recently adopted on national security, which President Jonathan publicly commended, and has now reverted to unbridled political partisanship.

There can be no other explanation or justification for the completely unwarranted and very uncharitable assault on the conduct and integrity of President Jonathan which the statement he issued today represents.

General Buhari’s main grouse which clearly motivated his ill-considered statement appears to be what he called “the gale of impeachments or the utilisation of desperate tactics to suffocate the opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state”.

It is most unfortunate that instead of working to put their house in order and resolve the leadership crises and internal contradictions that have plunged their party into a downward spiral, General Buhari and his opposition allies have resorted to blaming a blameless President for their woes.

The processes for impeaching an elected Governor are clearly stipulated in the National Constitution which Nigeria has operated since 1999. The President of Nigeria is not assigned any role in that process and President Jonathan has certainly not played any role in the recent impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa or in the impeachment drama currently being played out in Nasarawa State.

For the record, President remains fully committed to upholding the letters, principles and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution as he has sworn, and defending the rule of law and integrity of the democratic process with all his might.

General Buhari talks about anarchy. He needs to be reminded that President Jonathan from his humble beginnings as a Deputy Governor in Bayelsa state to date, has never in his acts, or utterances, recommended or promoted violence as a tool of political negotiation.

Contrary to whatever General Buhari and his new friends may imagine, President Jonathan fully respects the rights, powers, authority and independence of elected representatives of the people, including the members of the state assemblies who have concluded or initiated impeachment proceedings against their state governors on grounds which they consider justifiable.

The constitution does not give the President any power to intervene in such proceedings and President Jonathan has never  arrogated such powers to himself  or sought to exert any nefarious and unconstitutional influence on state assemblies in Adamawa, Nasarawa or anywhere else in other to secure undue political advantage for his party as General Buhari unjustifiably alleges.

President Jonathan remains true to his declaration that no political ambition of his is worth the life of a single Nigerian. The President has definitely not declared war on his own country or deployed federal institutions in the service of partisan interests as General Buhari falsely claims. Neither has he been using the common wealth to subvert the system and punish the opposition, as the former Head of State inexcusably asserts.

Also, President Jonathan has never at any time ordered that any Nigerian should be kidnapped or that anyone should be crated and forcefully transported in violation of decent norms of governance.

We therefore urge General Buhari to tarry a while, ponder over his own antecedents and do a reality check as to whether he has the moral right to be so carelessly sanctimonious.

It may well be time to pull the brakes, as General Buhari says in his statement, but it is he and others who have resorted to idle scapegoating and blaming President Jonathan for their self-inflected political troubles who need to stop their inexcusable partisanship and show greater regard for the truth, democracy, constitutionalism, the rule of law, peace, security and the well-being of the nation.

General Buhari should leave the political scene and retire into Farming.

that’s your opinion but sorry, he is going to be around politically for a long time

      • Clay

‘and what is the impact of his being around if I may ask. I think his retiring into maybe kola nut (gworo) farming might do him some good like his brother Mai mangoro retired into mango farming before OBJ lured him out into politics only to be disgraced out. I believe Nyako must be cursing OBJ now for all his woes. One thing most of you don’t understand and failed to understand is that Buhari can never win the presidency of this great country. Its all over for him and Atiku. Maybe Tambuwal in future or some other moderate northerners who really think and believe in Nigeria and not those whose idea of Nigeria is just north and islam. No, we have passed that stage my brother.

  • Seriously Buhari is a Man i Respect for his unrelenting strength and Courage, but the fact is that he needs to Understand that he posses a power greater than the military might he once had and that is the power of charisma. people hang on to the his words and use them as a catalyst for their actions; case in point, in 2010 when Buhari made some strong declarations about the election “there will be bloodshed if Jonathan wins and we will make the country ungovernable” people with idle and evil minds capitalized on this, and the result is the current unrest we are seeing in the country today.
Even though Buhari might not be directly in support of the Current merchants of dis-accord in the country, He should as a matter of honesty feel somewhat responsible for the words he spoke, that became a seed for the wicked to thrive.
Buhari should realize also that He can not equate himself to the likes of Charisma-free individuals like Asari Dokubo, whose words hold no sway in the hearts of his kinsmen… i remain #ARROGANTLY_Nigerian

    • Sadiq Abdulhakeem

First off, the good General NEVER made such comments! Those comments were attributed to another political opponent that vehemently opposed the emergence of Goodluck under thesame party platform he belong to (PDP). Blaming him for the current unrest in the country is quite frankly preposterous. For if there is any truth to it, what stops the commander in chief of country from arresting him or whomever is responsible. Lest we forget, the former Head of the SSS did expose and confirm the cause of the current political unrest in the country. He unfortunately lost his job for such audacity and passed away in an incident many believe was orchestrated. Back to the matter, Nigerians need to see truth for what it is and not as they want to perceive it. And truth came crisply from the lips of a patriot, the denial of which only further alienates the leadership from the people. May God help us, God bless Nigeria. Amen

. Buhari is unforgiven. When he “took over” by coup in 1983, even remembered an article written a very very long time ago by Bisi Onabanjo (‘The Mallams are coming’) and a later one in which Onabanjo wrote that people should watch out for that “gangly officer from the north” after Buhari gave a no holds barred speech at some Army function where he was reported to be very openly pro Fulani and pro Islam to the exclusive of all else and also talked about termination of democratic rule. For that, Onabanjo got one of the harshest jail terms and treatments.

        19. Buhari intolerance is worse than Obasanjo’s. When he was adopted as the ANPP’s candidate on the night of the party’s Primaries without prior warning to the other candidates and a few of them protested, Buhari got up and made a speech that those people must be disciplined. I subsequently saw him on BBC’s “hard talk” and he frightened me and the interviewer with his archaic and fundamentalist intolerant views. His understanding and articulation is very much in doubt.

        20. The evil genius, IBB and his crew similarly ran rings around Buhari. On the 10th anniversary of Abacha’s demise, Buhari said that Abacha stole nothing from Nigeria! Despite millions of Dollars recovered from banks around the world and the Abacha family signing a formal agreement to return over $1 billion dollars, Buhari still said that Abacha’s stealing remains an unproved allegation!!!! Why? Because Abacha set Buhari up like an emperor and let him use oil money from the Niger Delta to develop the North without supervision or questions

Bros Jona, make you ride on. You dey hear me so? We dey for your back and your side dey do Ochuko & Mudiagha for you. ‘Lotthing dey do you’ & ‘Lotting dey happen’.

It is maniacally bewildering that a hater of democracy and presidential aspirant emeritus called Buhari will be the one accusing another of declaring war. It is the height if insanity. No matter the frustrations and implicit quest for blood by Buhari (courtesy of his statements in recent & time past), this Savanna man should get the message loud & clear – that NEVER again will the wealth owners & rich Littoral territories of continent Nigeria (South South & South East), allow their resources to be wasted, stolen and brazenly released to foreign countries to steal and exploit to the detriment of the
ecosystem of the indigent peoples. NEVER!

The time has come for the people of the Delta to take ownership and control of their resources and we do NOT need permission from anyone or region to do that. One thing Buhari & perhaps some other continent Nigerians don’t understand is that the people from the countries of the Delta/SS Republic, are innately militant nobles. Therefore, no one threatens us and we are never threatened by any. There are more people in Rivers & even Delta than in Norway or Ireland. So, even without merging, these states of the Delta regions can be independent countries. Buhari should take note.

It was Buhari who jailed Fela and ordered him to be beaten without trial in 1984 bcos he sang a song. Youtube is replete with the videos. It was Buhari who worked as an employee of Abacha as PTF chief where oil monies disappeared and Abacha siphoned billions under Buhari’s watch. Yet, he claims been a saint. To cap it, this avowed enemy of democracy committed treason when he ousted a civilian president via a coup in 1983…and he introduced the following decrees:

Decree 2 = Power to arrest and permanently detain innocent citizens without trial or legal representation.
Decree 4 = Power to detain press men & journalists without trial or legal representation.

Yet, this power drunk who said he would soak blood of innocent Nigerians on the streets, wants to come back at 81yrs of age when his great grand children need him at home. Nonsense! Luggard’s error of amalgamation should be reversed. This is the demand of the SS&SE People.

APC—Why did Buhari go for late Sam Mbakwes wife-after sending him to prison————

-Plus Buhari having Sam Mbakwe in jail, went for one of Mbakwe’s wives. He established himself again for what he was/is letting Mbakwe receive in jailhouse news of the death of another of Mbakwe’s two wives. One (I can’t remember his name now; Odenigbo?) also died in jail.

      16. Buhari’s henchman and sponsor, CPC governorship candidate for Kano State, is Mohammed Abacha, the same person that had/ran a personal killing squad, co ordinated the killing of Kudirat Abiola & attempted to kill Ibru; and also stashed money in underground tanks, all less than 13 years ago, Nigerians have very short selective memory. Shame!

      17. Buhari discriminated against persons from other ethnic groups/faiths; and that as PTF Chairman, he employed an overwhelming number of Fulani/Hausa/Moslem people at the detriment of other groups and concentrated PTF projects in the North. If in doubt read El Rufai’s testimony where he wrote about Katsina boys who used the money they made at PTF to bankroll Yar’Adua’s election in 1999.

It worth noting that this a Govt under GEJ that it took over 3 weeks to accept that Chibok girls were abducted, the same Govt who failed to equip the Military to destroy Boko Haram, the same FG that spent billions of Dollars in security and seeking NASS consent to borrow US1b, under the same govt Boko Haram is more equipped than the Military, the only fucntioning armoured tanker meant to protect people against Boko Haram was deployed to Chief of Defence Staff village, while in the entire operations there no single functionning armoured tank. THE SAME GOVT THAT HAS SURPASSED LEVEL OF CURRUPTION AND SCANDALS OF PREVIOUS GOVTS INCLUDING IBB, ABACHA & OBJ. GEJ offer protection to corrupt members of his cabinet including first lady, Dezani, FCT Minister etc. while they PDP keeps comparing GEJ with patrotic and super performing leaders of like Kim of Singapore, Martin Lurther King, JF kennedy etc. but these people had the confidence and trust of their people, their countries prospered during their times. eg Kim’s close friend in Singapre was accused of collecting Singporian $500,000 in two tranches, despite his closeness to his Prime Minister, he suspended from office, investigated; while he was being investigated he sought for auideince with his close friend and prime minister, but the PM declined as that would comprise the investigation. eventually the man knowing he’s guilty and the consequence, he committed suicide. Compare this with billions of dollars that keep vanishing, while Nigerians are made to pay dearly through poverty, joblessness, hunger, crime……………… When Azazi who as NSA was in exclellent position to know a lot about clasified info, spoke against them, in no time he was relieved of his position and later died.

Buhari ordeal started when he started dealing our corrupt leaders. This was a man who presided Ministry of Oil, compare him with Dezani, . when he was in power the refineries were functioning. Any time there was expected shortfall of petroleum products, his government gave contract for refining of our crude oil for a fee instead of importing refined products. when the crude is refined, the required products wer shipped back for national consumption, while other products that may not be needed were sold to international market. let compare what is obtainable now

Neither General Mohammadu Buhari nor Goodluck Jonathan makes any sense. Neither man is appropriate for Nigeria’s leadership. Jonathan is too provincial, and Buhari is too bigoted. Both men wear their religions on their sleeves to stoke the fires of religious war in Nigeria. Both men are the two poles of Nigeria’s crisis. Both are stalwarts of regional entitlement to the presidency. Nigeria is therefore held to ransom by these two misfits. Broadly speaking, Nigeria’s entire leadership is itself fully immersed in thefts to be of any use. A new crop of thinking men with revolutionary fervour is what is needed to arise and take Nigeria by the scruff of the neck if the country is to have a chance of escaping a bloody apocalyptic disaster. Official theft is the cause of Nigeria’s slide to poverty and civil war violence. Official thefts cannot be reformed. Reform is out of the question. Official theft can only be resolved by revolutionary means. No nation can ever know peace if its elites are begotten of stolen wealth. That is the problem with Nigeria.

General Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Federal Government to stop the clampdown of Boko Haram insurgents, saying Niger Delta Militants were never killed or properties belonging to them destroyed.

Buhari who spoke on Sunday on a Liberty Radio programme, Guest of the Week monitored said accused the government of killing and destroying houses belonging to Boko Haram members while the Niger Delta militants get special treatment.

The former dictator said that unlike the special treatment given to the Niger Delta militants by the federal government, the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses demolished by government.

While accusing President Jonathan of failing from the beginning to address the security situation in the country, Buhari said he has never been in support of the state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa state.

According to Buhari “what is responsible for the security situation in the country is caused by the activities of Niger Delta militants. Every Nigerian that is familiar with what is happening knows this. The Niger Delta militants started it all.

“What happened is that the governors of the Niger Delta region at that time wanted to win their elections. So they recruited the youths and gave them guns and bullets and used them against their opponents to win elections by force. JUDGE FOR SELF

Personally am wondering what kind of job Reuben Abati will do after the President leave Aso rock. I understand very well that he is doing the job that he is being paid for, but Is this Democracy that we have in Nigeria today?
APC is the only opposition Party in Nigeria, they are not perfect and they have never rule Nigeria and they speak for the common man, If it is God’s will 2015 they will come to power. where is the integrity of this PDP government, What has PDP really done for Nigerian? Look at the body language of the President, there is corruption in behaviour and actions. PDP is nothing than brunch of terrorist and rogues.

The late military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, did not loot the national treasury contrary to the general impression, two military former heads of state have said.

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria between 1983 and 1985, and his successor, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, gave Abacha the clean bill in Kano yesterday after the rememberance prayers marking 10 years of the death of Abacha, who ruled between 1993 and 1998.

Abacha was accused of stealing nearly £5 billion while in office, out of which over $1 billion has reportedly been recovered from various sources around the world.

But Babangida, who described Abacha as a “courageous, loyal and honest military head of state who stood for the unity and development of the country during his years in government”, has dismissed the allegations.

He said the looting allegations against Abacha were unfounded and baseless, stressing that “it is not true that he looted public treasury. I knew who Abacha was because I was close to him”.

Babangida said: “Abacha was a courageous person who stood firmly in handling the affairs of the country during his regime.” This is the type of job he is doing-animals

He added that the regime of Abacha brought positive changes in the country which should have been emulated.

He said 10 years after the death of Abacha, his contributions to the nation’s economy remain indelible.

“There is no doubt, during his administration as head of state, Abacha contributed his best to the nation’s economy which we are still enjoying,” he said.

I can see you have taken time to extract some encomiums on Abacha. He did not steal public funds, ok, Now tell me all these money government recovered from his accounts are they from you or me. Are those money from his business investments. Why are people like this. If you tell me government is after Abacha because he is dead I will readily agree with you but if you are telling me that all these funds reportedly recovered from him and family are fiction then you better tell us another story.

The President through his presidential spokesman has spoken and the message is clear. He who is going to equity must go with clean hands. General Muhammed Buhari past was heavy load of abuse of fundamental human rights against perceived enemies. So if any Nigerian is to warn the president against attack on enemies, he is definitely not the one!

God will see us through. Let us work together in love and a positive mind, backed with integrity to make this country great, again.God help Nigeria.

What is Buhari looking for in a democratic dispensation? This was a man who overthrew a democratically elected government. If we had continued with our democracy which he scuttled in the 80s we would have come a long way by now. He should please go and sit down we don’t want him around, my people say, he who cuts head does not allow a man with a machete to go behind him. Buhari is not a democrat and as such should give the needed chance for democrats to move our country forward. A man who has lost elections in his younger age how Does he wish to win when he is now in the twilight of his lifetime?
