Zamfara residents live in fear of flood

The residents say they contribute to the flooding of their community

Residents of Gangaren, Tsohuwar, and Kwata in Gusau area of Zamfara have expressed fears that the ongoing  indiscriminate dumping of refuse exposes them to flooding.

In separate interviews on Wednesday, the residents said that un-hygienic behaviour is responsible for the recent flooding.

“We have to blame ourselves over the dangers of flooding due to our poor sanitary attitudes of dumping refuse,” a resident, Aliyu Shehu, said.

Mr. Shehu also noted that some drains provided by the government are narrow.

“This could be the reason why our children are suffering from all kinds of diseases at the commencement, during and after rainy season,” he said.

Another resident and mother of 11, Hauwa’u Mohammed, said that many of the children suffered from diarrhoea, rashes and swollen stomachs and that sometimes, such ailments result to death.

“Many of us are peasant farmers who cannot afford high hospital bills,” she lamented.

Ms. Mohammed appealed to the state government to provide a healthcare facility in the area.
