WAEC releases 2012 results, withholds 122 thousand certificates

WAEC says that 38 per cent of the 1.67 million students who sat for the exams passed with five or more credits including English Language and Mathematics.

The West African Examination Council on Friday said 122 thousand Nigerian students who wrote its May/June 2012 Senior School Certificate Examination will not have any results, as their results have been withheld.

This was disclosed by Iyi Uwadiae, the head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), who announced the release of the remaining results on Friday in Lagos.

Students will be able to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website within the next 48 hours.

Mr. Uwadiae announced that 38.81 per cent out of the 1.67 million candidates that sat for the examination scored credits in at least five subjects including English Language and Mathematics; an increase of about eight percent from last year.

He added that the results of 1.54 million candidates, 91.1 percent of the total candidates, have been fully released; while 150,874 candidates got a partial release of their results, because few of their subjects were still being processed due to registration and documentation errors.

Mr. Uwadiae said the council was working to release the remaining results for the latter category of students

About 122,000 candidates will however not receive results yet.

The WAEC boss explained that this category of results is withheld because the candidates are suspected of involvement in examination malpractices; which are under investigation.

The exam malpractice rate also declined this year, compared with 2011 records, Mr. Uwadiae said.

He drew a direct correlation between performance and exam malpractice, saying a higher performance this year translates to a decline in malpractice rate.
