Gunmen kill 16 worshippers in attack on church in Kogi

Reports reaching us from Okene, Kogi State, say unknown gunmen have killed 16 persons Monday in an attack on worshippers at a Deeper Life Church in Okene.

Although details of the attack are still sketchy, the Joint Task Force Commander in the state, Lt Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, confirmed the attack.

He said 15 worshippers died instantly in the attack while another died on the way to hospital.

The commander said that many injured persons were rushed to hospitals in Lokoja, a distance  of 40 minutes driving on the road from Okene.

He said the casualty figure might rise considering that some sustained heavy injuries.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet.

A  bomb had on July 15 gone off in the Obehira area of the city.

The blast occured near the MPC filling station in the town.

The bomb, according to witnesses, was concealed in a parked black Rover car with registration number LKJ 919 AA. The car’s boot was completely damaged

Two suspects were arrested by security agents after the explosion.

The following day, the police announced the recovery of 46 Improvised Explosive Devices, and the arrest of a suspect from a residential building during an overnight operation.
