UPDATED: One killed, 7 injured as Emir of Fika escapes death in suicide bomb attack

Less than a month after a bomb explosion in Maiduguri Central Mosque almost killed the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Fika, Muhammadu Abali Ibn Muhammadu Idrissa, narrowly escaped death today in another suicide bomb attack at the Potiskum Central Mosque, Yobe state.

Reports say the suicide bomber and the Emir’s police orderly died instantly after the bomb went off.

Narrating the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Yobe Police Command’s spokesperson, Toyin Gbadegesin, said the bomber tried to get close to the emir after the the Friday prayers, but was prevented by a policeman.

He said that as the bomber was making frantic moves to push himself through the crowd to reach the emir, a policeman suspected his movement and pushed him down.

The spokesman said that upon falling down, one of the concealed explosives detonated and killed the bomber, while five policemen and two civilians sustained injuries.

He said that the emir escaped unhurt.

Mr. Gbadegesin stated that the police anti-bomb squad, thereafter, detonated some other un-exploded devices carried by the bomber.
