Amos Buba, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Benue, has blamed the high rate of accidents in the state on potholes, over-speeding and lack of warning signs on the roads.
Mr. Buba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi on Monday that he arrived at the conclusion after a tour round the state.
He said that potholes dotted Makurdi- Aliade, Lower Benue, NNPC Depot roads likewise the Makurdi – Gboko road and Abinsi, Sam Zuga Foundation and Wannune area.
Mr. Buba said the situation was responsible for frequent accidents on the roads in the affected areas.
He said other areas with high accident rates were Otukpo Enugu, Otukpo – Otukpa and Ugbema – Katsina-Ala road, adding that the commission had put warning signs on the accident-prone areas.
He, however, gave an assurance that the “Operation Rainstorm” introduced by the Corps Marshal, would assist the commission in curtailing road accidents.
He said the new strategy allowed officers and men of the commission to be stationed at accident-prone areas to force drivers to observe speed limits.
He also appealed to motorists to comply with road regulations and warned that offenders would be punished.
