New twist to Jos crisis as insurgents fire three rocket propelled grenades in less than 12 hours

The crisis in Jos Tuesday took a new dimension as Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) were used, for the first time, on a school and two residential buildings.

Witnesses say a passer-by sustained serious injuries after he was hit by an RPG fired on a three-storey residential building near the police station at Bukuru market.

Some hours earlier, a 7-year old was killed when an RPG was fired at an Islamic school in the Kerana area of Bukuru.

According to the spokesperson of the Special task force, STF, Salisu Mustapha, the boy was hit after some gunmen opened fire on Nurul Islam School in the Kerana area of Bukuru in Jos.

Narrating the details of the incident, he said some men, driving in an Opel car, fired an RPG at the school.

“They came on a vehicle and fired an RPG,” Mr. Mustapha said. “Their target was the school building; fortunately they could not hit the target properly and the kid that was killed was outside the school building, we have fragments of the explosive device used.”

The STF spokesperson also said witnesses have provided them with the description of the vehicle and that a patrol team had already gone in search of the attackers.

The three-storey building, sources say, is about 500 meters away from the Islamic school.

A third RPG was reportedly fired close to a STF camp site.

Security operatives have reportedly cordoned off the area of the three attacks.
