UPDATED: Reps summon Jonathan, security chiefs over Boko Haram attacks

In what appears decisive for a lingering national security failing, the House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a resolution summoning President Goodluck Jonathan to speak on his administration’s response to the unrelenting attacks launched mainly by the militant group, Boko Haram, and other bouts of sectarian strife.

The president, alongside his security chiefs, is to address the lawmakers behind closed doors about the crisis that again flared last weekend with multiple bombs attacks and reprisals in Kaduna, and clashes between militants and security forces in Yobe state.

A date has however not been named for the meeting, meaning the lawmakers may leave the president to decide on a time in line with his schedule.

Mr. Jonathan was scheduled to travel to Brazil Tuesday for the United Nations earth summit, Rio+20, as the aftermath of the multiple bouts of violence that have killed dozens stoked uncertainties in northern states of Kaduna and Yobe.

The president, who is travelling with his wife, Patience, will participate in the summit’s four plenary sessions at Rio Centro plenary hall on Wednesday and Thursday, the State House said in a statement Monday.

He will also attend a reception to be hosted by the Brazilian president for Heads of States and Governments.

Clashes between security forces and suspected Boko Haram militants erupted in Damaturu and Potiskum in Yobe state on Monday, forcing residents indoors with unclear reports of casualties, a day following deadly bomb attacks on churches and reprisals in Kaduna state.

In Kaduna the state government has restored absolute after the violence in the state again degenerated following a fresh youth unrest. The curfew was earlier relaxed after temporary calm returned to the state following Sunday’s attacks.

Still, anxiety and fear of further outbreak of violence hung in the air, they said.

In Damaturu, gunshots and explosions rang out from the Sabon Pegi area of the Yobe capital, rapidly spreading to other parts of the north east state Monday evening with unconfirmed reports the attack was later curtailed by the Joint Task Force. Residents say the attack was aimed at taking over the state government house.

Resuming from its two-week break Tuesday, the Senate held hours of closed-door meeting on the violence that has increasingly appeared routine and undefeatable.

The Senate said it would do whatever needed to contain the crisis even if it meant initiating a fresh constitution amendment to ensure the unity of the country.

“We must make sure the current security challenges of the country do not continue,” Senate president, David Mark, said after the session. The House considered a motion on the crisis, and approved an amendment put forward by Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, demanding the appearance of the president.

Mr. Jonathan came under serious criticisms from the lawmakers for embarking on the Brazil trip while the nation was on “fire”.

The motion was first table by Yakubu Barde (Kaduna/PDP) under matters of urgent national importance.

The motion initially sought a resolution condemning Sunday and Monday attacks, and urging the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to affected and displaced persons in Kaduna state.

When it came for contributions, Mr. Gbajabiamila (Lagos/ACN) suggested the president be asked to appear. The contribution was unanimously adopted.

“The security situation has infringed on the fundamental rights of Nigerians to religion, peaceful assembly, freedom of movement and right to life,” Mr. Gbajabiamila said.  “We are not castigating him (referring to Jonathan) but let us exchange ideas.”

See our earlier brief post below

The House of Representatives passed a historic resolution Tuesday, summoning President Goodluck Jonathan over excerbating violence that has gripped the nation for more than a year.

Federal lawmakers usually mandate the appearance of government ministers and other officials, while the president’s address before the National Assembly holds  annually during budget presentation, and occasionally during the visit of some international dignataries.

This time, the president is to officially brief the lawmakers on the current state of insecurity mainly in northern states.

He is to appear with his defence chiefs.

The date for his appearance has however not been named, meaning the lawmakers may allow Mr. Jonathan the discretion of choosing a date in line with his schedule.

Very welcome development. The executive needs to be brought to order. Governance is not condoling and sympathizing. There is a need to rethink the policing approach in Nigeria.

  • alubarika

Jonathan will appear before you people, we shall see

  • the same house of reps that couldn’t get daizane (then GM of NNPC) to appear before them. Wishful thinking

  • armrod

is he going to say anything different from what he has been saying before.

It will never happen that Jonathan will appear before the House of Thieves and Bribe Takers to answer for the well planned and coordinated actions of the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani who are having fun killing Southerners and Christians of Northern origin as well as destroying their properties and business premises, all aimed at eradicating Christianity from the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States? Was Jonathan involved in formulating the ABUJA DECLARATION? It is on record that the ABUJA DECLARATION was put together by the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani under the leadership of Buhari and IBB. In fact, IBB who was then the military Head of State signed the ABUJA DECLARATION with the official SEAL of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Abuja Declaration is the working and action paper of the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani which they have been implimeting deligently and step by step with joy and plenty of celebration. The Abuja Declaration is the outcome of Islam in Africa Organization (IAO) 1989 conference of the African Countries of the Organisation of the Islamic conference (OIC) organized and hosted by IBB and Abacha in Abuja. The Islam in Africa Organisation (IAO) is a Nigerian statuted Islamic Organization, an initiative of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
At the end of the conference a final communiqué was issued which included the following points:
    1. “To ensure only Muslims are elected to all political posts of member nations”.
    2. “To eradicate in all its forms and ramifications all non-Muslim religions in member nations (such religions shall include Christianity, Ahmadiyya and other tribal modes of worship unacceptable to Muslim).” (the word Christianity is underlined in the declaration).
    3. “To ensure the ultimate replacement of all western forms of legal and judicial systems with the sharia in all member nations before the next “Islam in Africa conference.”
    4. “To ensure the appointment of only Muslims into strategic national and international posts of member states.
Particulars of this communiqué which completely violate the Nigerian Constitution are also well documented in Australian author Stuart Robinson book titled Mosques and Miracles.

Boko Haram with the active support of the entire Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani is working very hard to make point No. 2 of the ABUJA DECLARATION a reality. Point No. 2 of the ABUJA DECLARATION states: “To eradicate in all its forms and ramifications all non-Muslim religions in member nations (such religions shall include Christianity, Ahmadiyya and other tribal modes of worship unacceptable to Muslim).” (the word Christianity is underlined in the declaration). So I ask, what do they want Jonathan to answer?

For online details of the ABUJA DECLARATION please click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A… and also read Australian author Stuart Robinson book titled Mosques and Miracles. Particulars of this communiqué which completely violate the Nigerian Constitution are well documented in the book. It will be well observed that the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani have never relented in their diligent point by point implementation of the ABUJA DECLARATION. Take point No.1 for instance: “To ensure only Muslims are elected to all political posts of member nations”. IBB ensured that his transition program produced a Muslim-Muslim ticket while Buhari announced that Muslims should not vote for Christians. Take point No. 4 for instance: “To ensure the appointment of only Muslims into strategic national and international posts of member states”. Buhari and IBB ensured that all strategic national and international posts of Nigeria were filled with only Muslims. It was worse with Buhari. Take point No.3 for instance: . “To ensure the ultimate replacement of all western forms of legal and judicial systems with the sharia in all member nations before the next “Islam in Africa conference.” In pursuance of this goal and in violation of the Nigerian Constitution all the 12 States of the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani are firmly under Sharia. With Sanusi they are now extending this point to Banking. Take ponit No. 2 for instance: “To eradicate in all its forms and ramifications all non-Muslim religions in member nations (such religions shall include Christianity, Ahmadiyya and other tribal modes of worship unacceptable to Muslim).” (the word Christianity is underlined in the declaration). This point is the present focus of Boko Haram and that is why they Bombing churches and killing Christians.

The so called Abuja Declaration is fictitious. Someone has fabricated all these lies to plant more seeds of religious discord in Nigeria. Whoever concocted these lies and is now promoting it is doomed to fail in woefully. Fabricating lies against the Muslims and their religion has been going for many centuries, and Islam has survived it all. Miraculously, the same Islam keeps going, and going and going to become the fastest growing religion today. Is KenMani one of the run away Nigerians, aka Nigerians in “diaspora” who remotely and shamelessly make noises about the same Nigeria they ran away from. I mean those Nigerians who left the country because they don’t have the survival mechanism and capacity to live in it. Whether KenMani is Nigeria or not, the fire you have been busy kindling may eventually engulf you in one way or another. “Love thy neighbour”, that’s both a Christian and Islamic teaching whether you practice it from the Christian or Islamic point of view does not matter. It is not late, get cured and repent.

      ****** PROPAGATING HATE IS ANTI-CHRIST. ******

      • KenMani

The only thing about the religion called Islam is that it is all about lies; how on earth would you say that a conference hosted openly in Abuja is fabricated?

  • KenMani

FOR LASTING PEACE IN NIGERIA, NIGERIANS MUST BE BOLD ENOUGH TO TELL THE NORTHERN MUSLIM HAUSA-FULANI TO STOP THEIR UNCONSTITUTIONAL IMPLEMENTATION OF THEIR ABUJA DECLARATION. PERIOD.

one day the pride and arrogance of the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani will surely come to an end. What stops TAMBUWAAL from meeting with the President to discuss the security situation in the country and convey to him the thoughts of members of the House of Thieves and Bribe Takers?

Cooked up stuff against the innocent Muslims. Would you achieve peace and harmony by promoting this fictitious Wiki page? By planting seed of discord in Nigeria and watering it constantly with hate KenMani is not helping matters. The knowledgeable knows that Islam and Christianity shares a lot in common because they have a common origin. The dudes believes and thinks the other way round. Get cured, repent and find a decent job.

      • KenMani

Please be informed that this not a fictitious wiki page. The conference was held in Abuja and the communique was issued therefrom. It was not a hidden conference. Again, it is also instructive for you to read Australian author Stuart Robinson book titled Mosques and Miracles. Particulars of this communiqué which completely violate the Nigerian Constitution are well documented in the book.

Which other sectarian strife is going on? There is only one that I know about and that is Boko Haram. You guys are trying to foster the notion that there is a parallel religious sect attacking people. In reality, the fact that the christians in Kaduna retaliated for once after being subjected to a total siege by the Islamists cannot be mistaken for a mobilized and orchestrated group like BH.

  • Aabdul

May God help our leaders to see the truth and say it the way it is. They are feeding fat and Nigerians are suffering. Why all these attacks on churches. For three weeks now churches in Nigeria have been in fear of attachs from our Islamic sets – book harram. I must say the truth now. If any of our mosque has been attached by any Christian set, I tell you the represal attach will be uncountable across the northern states. Our leaders are not sincere. The BK should start killing the leaders at all levels then they will know what our Christian fiends are facing.
The north is completely destroyed. It will take years to build what with our hands and the lip service of leaders have destroyed. The blood of those killed innocently is crying for vengeance. Very soon the judgement will be on us in the north and in Nigeria in general. All they have looted will not save them. Curse on our leaders and pdp government.

  • jibokabir

comments such kenmanis r symptomatic of the deep ignorance that pervades the nigerian space. it is really a pity that the fiction about hausa- fulani jihadists plot against christians is still being peddled by certain nigerians on the issue of bh & politics in general when impact d ordinary socalled hausa-fulani and his non muslim brothers in the north and elsewhere are all victims of the nigerian establishment. for example, just look at the latest statistics on poverty and you will know the north tops the list. if u r indeed a nigerian, my brother i caution you to properly educate yourself about the real situation for a balanced and unbiased analysis of the real situation.
the present security challenge is affecting everybody in the country but the pple in the north both christians and muslims are bearing the brunt especially ordinary folks who have to live with the fear, shame and uncertainty on a adily basis. i therefore beg you to desist from these empty scaremongerings and join other well meaning nigerian in seeking alternative and peaceful means of resolving the current security impasse. it is actually a sticky mess that is making the c in c to bow down his head in frustration. again, it must not be forgotten that the independence day bomb suspects are presently being tried in far way SA.
we are therefore faced with a big challenge and all this childish grandstanding and name calling is not going to solve the problem but reason and good intention from the part of our rulers.
i pity jonathan but it is his lot to help prevent the wanton loss of lives and property in this country and we trust him to help save us from the lunatic fringe thats bent on using islam as raison d’etre to pit muslims against their brothers in xtianity.
