The police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned two middle-aged men at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with kidnapping and threat to life.
The two accused are Paul Okoye (41) and Emmanuel Ehiemere (48).
The prosecutor, an assistant superintendent, Barth Nwaokeye, said that the accused on May 2 kidnapped 52-year-old Fatai Shobowale.
Mr. Nwaokeye described the duo as seri al kidnappers who used various mobile lines, registered with false names, to make threatening phone calls.
He alleged that after kidnapping Mr. Shobowale in the NACO area of Lagos, the accused persons called his wife and threatened to kill him if a ransom was not paid.
The prosecutor said the offences, for which the duo were charged, were contrary to and punishable under Sections 21, 230 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge.
Mr. Okoye claimed to be a customs agent and residing at Block 79, Flat 6, Abesan area of Lagos, while Ehiemere resides at Anifowose Street also in Abesan.
The Magistrate, Olufemi Isaac, granted each of the accused a bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till July 2 for further hearing.
