At Democracy Day church service, Jonathan, ministers, decline to say "amen" to prayer against corruption

President Goodluck Jonathan, governors, ministers and top government officials on Sunday failed to demonstrate public commitment to the fight against corruption.

At the interdenominational church service held at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to commemorate the 2012 National Democracy Day, the guest preacher and immediate past Prelate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Peter Akinola, in his sermon, challenged the congregation to join him in the fight against corruption in the country by committing perpetrators to God.

But the congregation, including the President, who was accompanied by his wife, Patience, the Governor of Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson and Kaduna, Patrick Yakowa, Deputy Governor of Nasarawa state, Dameshi Luka, as well as some ministers failed to respond to prayers to take corrupt officials “to the court of God.”

Apparently, expecting to hear a thunderous YES or AMEN from the congregation, the Reverend, who instead got a deafening silence, exclaimed: “There you go! Oh, corruption! So, you are not ready to fight it, because you are all beneficiaries of it. Whether you steal in a small or big way, stealing is stealing.”

Apparently disappointed with the response he got, the clergyman shot angrily at Mr. Jonathan and his delegation, “See, it is very clear. You are not interested in fighting corruption. If you do, let us take our case to the court of God, if you dare. Who is deceiving who? You are only deceiving yourselves, not God. And you who is stealing government funds, subjecting the poor to untold hardship; you who steal oil subsidy money, making Nigerians pay for fuel through their noses; you who steal funds meant for improving our power supply, deliberately making Nigerians live a life in utter darkness, will you repent today? I doubt it!”

Before throwing the challenge at the president and other officials at the Service, Mr. Akinola  had delivered a homily on the destructive impact of corruption on Nigeria.

“This hydra headed monster (of corruption) has literarily taken over the soul and eaten up the fabric of Nigeria,” Reverend Akinola said. “Officials steal our public funds openly by the pen, while others steal by the power of the gun. Successive governments have declared half-hearted war against corruption to no avail. We know only too well that the fight against corruption is largely selective directed at those opposing the government, with no strong political connection.

“Many of those fighting it (corruption) in police and Judiciary have no clean hands. When any National Assembly Committee or any government agency is inviting anybody for questioning it is because those being investigated have not yet given the agency inviting it their due share of the booty.

“Worse still, those who have cleverly made away with public funds and are living above their legitimate incomes are those who are being honoured by traditional rulers, who make them chiefs and high chiefs. Recently, our universities have joined the queue by inviting those people and giving them some baseless honorary doctorate degrees.Sadly, therefore, corruption will continue in full gear, because Nigerians and the government only pay lip service to its eradication. But, I believed as a Christian, as a preacher, as one who reads the Bible, there a way out.”

He continued, “Corruption in a narrow sense is another name for stealing. Stealing is a sin God commands us all not to commit. As you know every soul that sins and fails to repent shall die in his sin and end up in hell. So, let us resolve here today to take to the court of God, beginning from this place, all those thieves, who have failed to repent. Will you join me?

“You who steal the money for road construction, leaving our roads in a state of disrepair, causing several accidents and untimely deaths of thousands of our people, their blood is crying to the creator. You who steal the money earmarked for healthcare delivery, thereby running down and turning our hospitals into mortuaries; you who have destroyed our educational system, because the money meant for schools never got to them; you who make laws to inflate costs included in the budget, are you listening to me?

“All of you, whoever you are, greedy, arrogant politicians and officials who are in government only for what you can steal from it and virtually nothing to contribute to national development and has turned Nigeria into a wretch, repent today, and make reparations and God will have mercy on you. Don’t say Amen, only if you repent.

“It is true that ICPC, EFCC, the Police, judiciary may not catch you stealing. But believe me, the all-seeing, all-knowing, all-wise and the almighty God sees you very clearly. But, He is patiently waiting for you to return to the path of sanity and righteousness.”

In his speech, President Jonathan did not react to the issues raised by the preacher, who also proffered a proposal for a new Nigeria.

The president, who identified terrorism as a major challenge the country is currently facing, said with the prayers of Nigerians and commitment of government, “we will overcome”.

“We are working very hard to reposition our security architecture to cope with the modern challenge of terror. We will overcome,” he said. “Even though some people are predicting the disintegration of Nigeria, let me assure Nigerians that Nigeria will never disintegrate. Our forefathers worked hard to bring us together as a nation. Because of the country’s potentials and resources, no one individual or group can create problems that can disintegrate this country.”

      Attributing a man’s crimes to his origin is proof of bias and bigotry. You can never give a good tribe a bad name because one man or a few men acted badly. Hating on a tribe because a man of another ethnic group and religious disposition is at the helm is simply denial. A spade hath no better name than a spade. Jonathan has performed creditably well. At least there is now a quota of amen allowed the presidency at church services, unlike the past where they could proclaim all the amen in the world. At least we have a president is very quick to respond to acts of terror and promise that more promises will be made. We now have a president that says a thing and then completely reverses itself as though it were a child learning to play chess. We have a president who acts in line with a security report that recommended the sack of Gen Azazi who is now serving as NSA. If a referendum were to be conducted today on this regime, it will be rigged to prove GEJ is doing great. We all know that they will not say Amen to your prayers because they know what they have done, and still doing to Nigerians.     I had expected that in a service of this nature the attention of the so called Rev Peter Akinola should have been focused on 1 Timothy 2:1-3 (NLT) “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior,” == It is most appropriate that the issue of corruption be directed at the church which are led by men like Rev Peter Akinola. It is the failure of the church under the leadership of men like Rev Peter Akinola that is responsible for the level of corruption that we have today in government. President Jonathan in his capacity as Head of State and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not represent the church. It is in his official capacity that he attended the interdenominational church service held at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to commemorate the 2012 National Democracy Day and I insist that 1 Timothy 2:1-3 is most appropriate for service of this nature. I also insist that the issue of corruption should be directed to the church which is currently being led by men like Rev Peter Akinola. If Jonathan decides to attend church is his personal capacity as a Christian, then it is right in that forum to challenge him with the problem of corruption even as other members attending church together with him are also challenged. Please be guided accordingly.

      There are two things. (i) The “head” of Nigerian Christians and (ii) the issue of corruption. You are right that the church should examine itself. But Nigerian christians are organized under Christian Association of Nigeria CAN. And CAN president is Pastor Oritsejafor. Now what did Pastor Oritsejafor say the other time he was at the presidency? He said President Jonathan has a transformative agenda which is the greatest thing that has ever happened to Nigeria. Now since you are NOT denying that the Nigerian system under President Jonathan literally worships corruption, I think you should direct your query to our Pastor, Oritsejafor who gave President Jonathan a clean bill of health. See what i mean? The head of Christians in Nigeria is Pastor Oritsejafor, the issue about the failure of the church should be directed to him. At least Rev Akinola has come out openly to denounce corruption. What did Pastor Oritsejafor do? he literally kissed and blessed corruption at the presidency throuhg his statements that an irredeemably corrupt regime is transformative. What is tranformative in the fact that only 3 out of 1.5million Nigerian kids who did the last JAMB got above 300? And this includes kids in the so-called private schools? What is transformative in the fact that the socalled Nigerian rulers now send their kids to even Ghana for high school?
      Now since you cited a part of the bible that gives the looters a soft landing , i want you to go and read John 2: 15 where Jesus himself drove away the looters of the temple of God. After reading it tell me what we should do about corruption and theft of our wealth by the few.

        I cannot judge the personal opinion of Pastor Oritsejafor but I have a very high view of Jonathan just as I have of President Shehu Shagari on corruption. Pastor Oritsejafor knows that the most appropriate place to raise the issue of corruption is in the church. Get it right in the church and the government will naturally follow. I am happy that we have at least one Nigerian Christian leader in Rev Akinola that will NOT sell the people of God in the service of money. Before Rev Akinola came out, the image of Nigerian christian leaders was begining to be questioned. I am happy that Rev Akinola is standing for what Jesus did in the Bible in John 2: 13-15.     To be honest as a christian and seeing what Pastors like Pastor Oritsejafor are doing, I was begining to lose faith and confidence in our church leaders who are not standing with their flock. I thought these Pastors are just trading us christians away for what they can get from the presidency. I did not lose my Christian faith for that is between me and my God, but I was losing confidence in these faith leaders until Rev Akinola came out for us Christians. Peter Akinola- I have worked in the Anglican establishment and I always thought his attitude towards his workers was anything but Christlike. However, He spoke the truth this time around and that is all that matters. Jonathan should know that things are not alright. And what did Rev.Akinola say? Lets take our issues to the Court of God! Is God presiding over any physical court? Let the leaders know that everyday Nigerians take their leaders to such a court anyway and judgement shall be passed. So whether they accept in public or not is their wahala. Repentance can’t be late.
    But honestly, we should stop this national prayer thing. It can only get more embarrassing and nothing to should for it. We all know God can’t be deceived!

    While many so-called “men of God” whom I prefer to label as “men of Nigeria’s god” – money & evil – the Rev. Peter Akinola continues to address the ills of Nigeria, especially these last couple of years. At Oni of Ife’s 80th, the Prelate called on the traditional ruler to work for a better Nigeria in his “what more do you want” homily.

    I believe that the Ecumenical Center at Abuja yesterday would be filled with the President’s men and women for the most part; hence the loud silence for the usual “Amen” that ends all prayers and supplications.

    At the church I attend, there are always loud AMENs to such prayers, including yesterday. The world should therefore not look at Nigerians as being accepting of the suffering being meted to them by their leaders who are being recommended for “the Court of God” by Peter Akinola.

    But before getting to “the Court of God” where these people will definitely have to answer one day, I believe Nigerians must first deal with the intractable corruption that sees politicians, top civil servants and their accomplices in society live in sheer luxury while the rest live in misery. How? We must use our brain which God has given us all to decide the steps against the rot. There’s no solution in seeing ourselves as North/South, Christians/Moslems as these are the same divisions being peddled and encouraged by the rulers.

    The shouting of ‘amen’ or lack of it from the government should not deter the Anglican Prelate from placing this matter in the ‘court of God’ which God only can preside over. We are tired of prelates, self proclaimed righteous politicians, hungry journalists and professional critics playing to the gallery on issues of corruption without raising a finger against the phenomenon. Corruption did not begin with this administration. Rather this government is on record for making a concerted effort to address the issue of corruption as attested to by the fuel subsidy probe. EFCC is on the matter and that if that agency needs the shouting of ‘amen’ to accomplish its task, then it now knows where to go. Those who were in the congregation, on the day in question, did not know much about the ‘court of God’ which the prelate only was privy to. What stopped this prelate from contributing his quota to eradicating this scourge of the country? Is he telling us that God Almighty needed the ‘amen’ of the people to commit the issue to ‘court of God’? We have seen too many noise makers a good many of whom were always in the habit of jumping from one end of the pulpit to the other in order to portray themselves as holier than everybody else. The Bible said: ‘All have sinned and come short of the glory of God’. The prelate should not have waited for this occasion to advertise his anti-corruption characteristics. The parables of the Pharisees and that of the rich-man and the widow have told us that God favours discreet rendering of service as opposed to jumping from Samaria to Judea and from one roof top to the other in order to proclaim ones righteousness. We can only appeal to the prelate to do his best for the country without waiting for the ‘amen’ of the rest of us who are sinners.

Some who now live in Minna go as far as sending parcel bombs to innocent journalists and organizing plane crashes to wipe out generations of military officers while others like Buhari promulgate decree No.4 to silence and jail opposition and lawlessly execute innocent Nigerians by firing squad. Some now buried in Kano go as far as assassinating millions of innocent Nigerian citizens. Some now buried in Katsina chased men like El Rufai out of the country. Yet with Jonathan everybody is home and all voices are heard.

Second, Mr. Felix Oboro is a convicted criminal. he was previously our ambassador to Venezuela. Mr. Jonathan re-appointed him. Between 2010 and now, Nigeria’s image has gone down to an abysmal low in world reckoning to the extent that our small neighbor beat Mr. Jonathan flat in the election to the president of African Union. Reuben Abati Jonathan’s megaphone had to quickly come home to cover the shame by OPENLY LYING that this same Jonathan did not contest. I guess Mr. Jonathan and Mr. Abati must have felt that African Union is like Nigeria where you manipulate elctoral records and even erase records. The records are there that Mr. Jonathan contested and lost to a small neighboring West African country. Recently, Nigerians were deported from South Africa and Egypt. The rate at which Nigerians are being hounded even in smaller African countries is increasing. Those are some of Mr. Jonathan’s record. These are really “world class” records in governance.

Today this group of homeless Nigerians now leave in modern boarding houses. Before Jonathan came to power it took a whole day 24hours if you are lucky to travel from Lagos to Benin. But I have traveled that road more than six times this year and each trip took less than three and half hours. Please don’t let us waste time. Jonathan has done so much but the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani are determined to unjustly label him as incompetent and corrupt. Time shall tell who is right.
