Okokomaiko residents get 72-hour deadline to fix faeces-leaking pipe

A Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Ojo, Lagos, on Thursday gave a 72-hour deadline to the occupants of No. 1, Aka road, Okokomaiko, a Lagos suburb, to repair a pipe that is leaking faeces on the street.

The Court President, Toyin Said, gave the order after five of the residents, Chinwe Obinna, Sunday Obi, Funke Babatunde, Samson Samson and Alice Okoye pleaded guilty to causing environmental nuisance.

“The accused are, therefore, found guilty as charged and are hereby given 72 hours within which to abate the nuisance or face sanctions,” he said.

Mr. Said imposed a fine of N10, 000 on each of the five residents.

He issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the other occupants of the building for failing to appear before the court.

The prosecutor, Kehinde Oye, said that their premises have become uninhabitable and that the emitting excreta threatens the health of all the inhabitants of the street.

Mr. Oye said that the residents failed to replace the damaged sewage pipe despite orders from the Ojo Local Government Council and other inhabitants of the street.

The case has been adjourned till June 5 for report on the repair of the pipe.
