Lagos assembly summons commissioners over alleged misappropriation of funds

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, ordered the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademorin Kuye, to appear before it on Tuesday over alleged misappropriation of funds.

The legislators also ordered the Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Enitan Oshodi, and Chairman of the conference of the 57 local government council, Akeem Sulaiman, to appear before the house on Tuesday. They will defend the illegal funding of the Junior League Board inaugurated in February 2011.

Babatunde Ayeni, the Chairman, House Committee on Youth, Sports and Social Development, had informed the lawmakers of an alleged illegal
collection of funds from the 57 Local Government Councils in the state by the board.

“Collecting money from local governments without due process, spending of public funds coupled with the refusal of the leadership of the Junior League Board to appear before the committee is unacceptable,” he said.

However, Mr. Kuye has sent a letter to the lawmakers saying that he would not be available because he had a news briefing scheduled for Tuesday.

Rotimi Abiru, the Deputy Chief Whip, said there is no reason for the commissioner to disregard the invitation of the House.

“I don’t see any reason why the commissioner should not be able to honour our invitation,” he said.

The legislators then ordered the Clerk, Ganiyu Abiru, to write the invitees and inform them of the importance of their appearance.

“The Clerk should write them again and inform them that the House will be sitting at10 a.m. on Tuesday and we will be expecting them,” he said.
