SLIDESHOW: The protest that roused Nigerian lawmakers from slumber

Members of the House of Representatives achieved what seems an unprecedented feet today, adopting all but two of the 63 recommendations of the Farouk Lawan-led fuel subsidy probe panel report.

The House was forced to commence the probe following a massive protest – Occupy Nigeria – in January after government suddenly announced the withdrawal of fuel subsidy. The government complained the scheme was too expensive for the country to bear and that it had been hijacked by a “cabal.”

Government’s actions at the time struck Nigerians as a show of weakness and high tolerance for corruption, as the House report has confirmed.

Millions of Nigerians across the country poured into the streets, defying massive security crackdown by the government, to protest the policy forcing the House to call an emergency session on January 8, where a decision to launch the probe was reached.

In this slideshow, we bring you the iconic images that defined the protest and pushed our leaders to actions
