Delta government says it has stopped the salaries of 44 secondary school teachers in the state for absenteeism.

The teachers were alleged to have abandoned their posts for over three months without permission.

A statement by Abraham Fabau, an official of state’s Post Primary Education Board, in Asaba on Monday, said that the sanction was in line with government’s policy that “no form of emolument be paid to staff who abandon their duties.”

The statement indicated that the sanction was the first step in the disciplinary measure to be applied on the affected teachers, who included principals and vice principals.

It said the Accountant General of the state had been directed on March 16, 2012 to quickly implement the order, adding that the order would subsist till further notice.

Patrick Muoboghare, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, told NAN in an interview on the directive that the sanction was meant to instill discipline in the school system.

He warned teachers, including those in primary schools, to desist from acts of indolence and indiscipline or face severe sanctions from the government.
