Police get new uniform

The IG of Police believes the new uniform will help to launder police image

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the test-run of a new uniform for men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar, who appeared in the new uniform Tuesday said the new police camouflage would eventually become one of the Force’s operational outfits.

Mr. Abubakar said the new dress is in line with the “transformation agenda of the Federal Government and the long desire of the Police Management-Team to reform and to launder an acceptable image for the police through the turn-out of its officers and men.”

According to a statement by police spokesperson, Olusola Amore, the  camouflage,  an admixture of black, white and ash colours, will serve as “operational dress for the police with some inherent advantages when fully integrated and confirmed as one of the official police outfits”

He said, “The advantages of the new police camouflage include, cost effective to maintain; operationally durable; highly customized with security features to forestall impersonation and environmentally friendly.”

He urged the general public to come up with constructive criticisms regarding the new police camouflage so that public opinion will be given adequate consideration.

If u like, change the uniform to linen. If your men keep being anti-law, then Nigerians and indeed the international community will continue to perceive the police as the main enemy. Police will never be our friends until they start learning how to behave like friends. Sometimes, I blame the police leadership for the failure of the rule of law. No thanks to the corruption in court. The police needs citizenship education as their first course.

I dont believe uniform is the problem of Nigerian police, how many uniforms did the police changed within last 10 years does that make any impact on their effectiveness and discipline? I think there is no enough discipline in both the officers and rank and file of the nigerian police, they should learn from the army, the level of discipline and respect they have for each other keep them under one effective umbrella, where orders are carried out effectively without hesitations, take a look at the Police Anti terrorist Squad trained for just few weeks by the Army, they are more active and respectful than the other police. So proper training and behavioural orientation is what the Nigerian police need not uniform.
