Fashola inaugurates Lagos Law Reform Committee

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, inaugurated a three-man Law Reform Committee charged with the responsibility of constantly reviewing the laws of the state on Monday.The committee is chaired by Supo Sasore, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state.

The other members of the committee are Tola Akinsanya, a Director in the Ministry of Justice and Hakeem Bello, a law lecturer at the University of Lagos.

During the Inauguration in Ikeja, Mr. Fashola said its Law Reform Committee was part of his administration efforts at ensuring that the state`s laws reflected the changing needs of the society.
He noted that developments in the state and the country in general had made some of the laws obsolete and ineffective, affecting the administration of justice.

 “Our laws have lagged behind the developments that have taken place in the society. For instance, we face the challenges of urbanization, more and more people are moving into the urban areas. We need new laws that guide and control how people live in these urban areas. We need to constantly review our laws to keep pace with the present realities.” He said.

The Lagos State Governor urged the committee to discharge its duties with diligence. He added that his government will uphold the rule of law in order to propel development.
Also in attendance was Mr. Adeola Ipaye, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State. He said that the constitution of the committee followed the enactment of the January 30 law amending the Lagos State Law Reform Commission Act.

Mr. Ipaye said that the Act was reviewed to strengthen the operations of the commission, particularly enhancing the capacity of members of the commission, in carrying out their responsibilities.
He said that the state would continue to review its laws to meet the changing needs of the government and residents.
