The Police Re-organisation Committee says it will recommend an upward review of the salary structure of the Nigeria Police Force in addition to the need for its total overhaul. Parry Osayande, the chairman of the committee, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday. He said policemen in Nigeria were the worst paid in the whole of the West African sub-region. He said the total overhaul of the police had become imperative so as to restore the past glory of the force.

Mr. Osayande said that the committee would also recommend massive training and re-training of policemen while all police training institutions would be rehabilitated and equipped.

“So, we are going to do a major overhaul. If we may use medical parlance, a complete dialysis of the force. Then, we will now take their welfare into consideration. They are underpaid, the worst paid in West Africa, then we shall laid emphasis on their training and retraining.

“That means, all the police institutions will be refurbished, if need be, we build more in all the geo-political zones.”

On communication gadgets for the police, Mr. Osayande maintained that the committee would recommend modern communication equipment for the force to enable the force to discharge its duties diligently and with professionalism.

“Policing involves communication because if you put three million policemen here, in different place and you cannot communicate they are on their own island.

“So, emphasis will have to be on modernization of our communication equipment throughout the length and breadth of this country and of course transportation.

“We are going to try and back police operations with science and technology, that means there will be forensic science laboratory and the rest of them.”

According to him, the Police will continue to embrace professionalism to enable it enforce the laws of the land, protect lives and properties of the citizens as well as to prevent and detect crimes.
