Soldiers, Boko Haram gunfight leaves 10 dead

A mid-afternoon exchange of fire between members of the extremist Boko Haram sect and soldiers of the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Monday in Maiduguri left at least ten people dead.

The spokesman of the JTF, Hassan Mohammed, said officers killed eight members of the sect after they attacked the popular fish market along Baga Road in the metropolis.

Sources told Premium Times that members of the sect came to the market and were planning to plant some Improvised Explosive Devices around the area when traders became suspicious and alerted the JTF which led to the gun battle.

Although Mr. Mohammed said three civilians were shot in the gun battle and were receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, eyewitnesses said they saw at least two corpses of civilians.

The attack on the fish market might be as a result of the killing of one member of the sect in the market last week.
