The spokesman of Kaduna State police command, Aminu Lawan, has confirmed to Premium Times that an officer from the anti-bomb squad of the police force was killed while trying to defuse a second bomb at the site of the explosion in Anguwan Sarki area of Kaduna metropolis.
“When the first explosion occurred, the police responded swiftly and cordoned off the area for search and sweep, and it was in the course of that exercise that we lost an officer who detected an unexploded device and was trying to defuse it when it exploded and killed him.” Mr Lawan said
The spokesman also said the entire area has been cordoned off and the search and sweep operation is on going until the police are sure the place is safe to the public.
The two explosions which happened very close to the Sultan Bello Mosque is said to be targeted at a military checkpoint close to the site of the blast and it happens eight days after a suicide bomber attempted to blow off the administrative block of the first division headquarters of Nigerian Army in Kaduna.
The Boko Haram sect had claimed responsibility for last week’s attack, but no one has claimed responsibility for today’s blasts as at the time of this report.
