Acting Inspector General of police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Monday ordered the cancellation of all approved police guards for private individuals and corporate bodies.
To that effect, personnel deployed for such duties are to be withdrawn immediately, Mr. Abuabakar said.
The affected personnel include those deployed by the Special Protection Unit, the Mobile Police Force and conventional policemen that were given as guards to companies and privileged citizens.
The police boss disclosed that the directive is meant to bring about professionalism, efficiency and integrity in the performance of all police duties.
He added that the withdrawal would ensure service delivery to the people.
Mr. Abubakar also ordered the dismantling of intra-state and highway roadblocks across the country especially on the roads of Lagos, Edo and South-Eastern States.
He said he was committed to building a strong and vibrant police force to give the country “the best policing service”.
Addressing assistant commissioners of police in charge of operations and criminal investigation departments of zonal and state commands in Abuja, Abubakar harped on the need to restore professionalism and integrity in all police duties.
Stressing that every policy statement would be pursued with all seriousness, the police boss said the time for rhetoric was gone.
He ordered the immediate release of all persons unlawfully detained in police cells and directed that no person should be detained beyond 24 hours except otherwise permitted by law.
The acting IG disbanded all squads, teams and other investigating outfit operating under whatever name and collapsed them under the original structures recognized by police standards.
He said, “All intra-state and highway road blocks which constitute nuisance especially on the roads of Lagos, Edo and South-Eastern States should be dismantled immediately.”
