The police in Enugu have confirmed the discovery of arms and ammunition concealed in a coffin in a taxi cab on Monday at Umuna in Igboetiti Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Ebere Amarizu, said in Nsukka on Wednesday that two suspects, Innocent Aka and Chukwunonso Anieke, were arrested during a stop and search operation by the police.
He listed the items discovered in the coffin as two AK 47 rifles, two long loaded bullets, 180 rounds of live ammunition and charms.
“The two suspects were arrested in Umuna while they were heading to Opi-Nsukka. The policemen at the checkpoint suspected the casket and asked them to open it.”
Amarizu said the suspects were conveying the casket in the taxi with registration number YA 425 EN and was marked 508.
“The police will get to the root of the matter and possibly effect more arrests,” Mr. Amarizu said. “After investigation, the suspects will be charged to court soon.
“The suspects are assisting the police in their investigation.”
