The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 39,066 candidates who sat for its November/December 2011 examination.

Head of Nigerian Office of the examination body, Iyi Uwadiae, who made the disclosure on Wednesday in Lagos during a news conference, said a total of 404,863 students sat for the examination.

Mr. Uwadiae attributed the withholding of the results to various reports of alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

Giving a breakdown of the number of candidates who sat for the examination, he said out of the total, 225,023 were males while the remaining were females.

He said that out of the total figure, 394,337 had their results fully processed, while 10,526 others had a few subjects still being processed due to various errors and omissions traceable to them.

Mr. Uwadiae added that some of the errors and omissions occurred during the online registration while some others were committed during the actual conduct of the examination.

The HNO noted that out of 49 blind candidates, 17 obtained credit and above in five subjects.

He added that 226,658 candidates obtained credit and above in mathematics, while 226,188 others obtained credit and above in English language.

Similarly, Mr. Uwadiae said that 147,012 candidates obtained credit and above in six subjects, 199,214 obtained credit and above in five subjects while 246,312 others obtained credit and above in four subjects.

He said that 287,918 had credit and above in three subjects, while 324,393 others obtained credit and above in two subjects.

Mr.Uwadiae said that with more attention given to the education sector in the various states of the federation, Nigerian youths would witness a positive turn around in their results.

He urged candidates who sat for the examination to check details of their performance with their scratch cards on the council’s website within the next 24 hours.

He lauded the Ebonyi government for providing accommodation for the take-off of the council’s branch office in Abakiliki.

Mr. Uwadiae said that the gesture was a welcome development, as it would assist in facilitating the council’s activities in the area.
