How we diverted N94 million paid by pilgrims – Former Executive Secretary

The immediate past executive secretary, Plateau Muslim Pilgrims Board, Salisu Mohammed, has owned up to diverting N94 million from funds paid by intending pilgrims.

Mr. Mohammed made the confession on Tuesday in Jos, while testifying before a Judicial Commission of Inquiry setup by the Plateau government to probe activities of former Governor Jonah Jang’s administration.

He told the commission that the money was diverted into sponsoring himself and some politicians on pilgrimage.

“The funds were diverted from no fewer than 131 intending pilgrims, who paid for slots to travel to Saudi Arabia for the 2013 Hajj,” he said.

According to him, “they were disqualified from participating in the pilgrimage because I was instructed, verbally, by the then Secretary to State Government (SSG), Prof. Shedrach Best, to do so and use the money to sponsor some political VIPs,” he said.

“The VIPs and I sponsored ourselves, with the fund collected from the pilgrims, to attend the World Islamic Conference in the United Kingdom and to the Hajj itself,” he further explained.

Mohammed, however, revealed that the payees had neither gone on the pilgrimage nor had their monies refunded to them.

He said he wrote to the then governor, Jonah Jang, asking for the remittance of the money and got an approval; but that the money was not released up till the time Mr. Jang left office in 2015.

The chairman of the commission, Stephen Adah, who was visibly miffed, expressed bitterness over the development and wondered why the former official got involved in such an “unholy” action.

He frowned at the act of depriving persons from performing spiritual rites for some selfish reasons, “after they had paid the fees”.

Mr. Adah promised that the commission would look into the matter and force those responsible to refund the monies to the owners.

    Premium Times Editor,

Nigeria is now a clear and present danger

Nigeria today is what a country should not be! Nigeria is spiritually, intellectually and aesthetically barren,
and utterly desolate and bereft of a sense of right and wrong – a forest of primates mistaken for humans.
Stealing has become a sole purpose of existence for Nigerians because ‘stealing’ and ‘success’ mean the
same thing in the country. About 90% of existing private wealth in Nigeria is suspected as likely stolen too.

“Anyone who’s a billionaire in Nigeria today is a thief,” said Nigeria’s past External Affairs Minister
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi. From the president to the janitor; and in the spaces in-between, treasury thieves
continually suffocate Nigeria with bad ethics and with frowzy stench of thefts.

Some of those thefts are what’s often round-tripped as BRIBES to Justices of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.
The effect is to close the doors to all honest people who must either accept poverty or renounce probity.
With the same stolen wealth, public office is bought; traditional titles of Emir is bought, murder is funded.
In what’s now a country under the leadership of thieves, only a very bloody revolution can save Nigerians!

I can’t believe that a whopping sum of 49 millions as in scarce money was paid out to be allowed to travel to the desert of Arabia just to throw stones at the Devil. Who told these conmen that the Devil lives in Saudi Arabia?

      (2) Exodus 6:4 ” And i will make my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers”.
      (3) And read “the first and the final commandment by Dr. Laurence B. Brown for details.
Please read to stop confirming ignrance and empty brain.

No wonder most of the commentators on the issue are either uninformed or mischievous or both. First, going to Hajj is compulsory to every Muslims who has the means at least once in his life time. Second, all Muslims are supposed to pay for their hajj and not use government sponsorship. Third it is unfortunate that Muslims that paid their money to perform their religious rite where not only prevented from going from going to the pilgrimage but were also not refunded their money. Yet instead of some of us to see this injustice they have resorted to abusing Muslims and Islam.

Evil corrupt men in government all over Nigeria. How can you guys divert peoples money for yourselves and you think God will hear your evil prayers in Mecca? The impunity of Nigerian politicians has gone beyond comprehension which is why the younger generations are into all sorts of negative unsustainable values.
